THE scene looked a little like the Larry King television show with a
financial twist. Over a 45-minute Webcast, a San Francisco television
interviewer, Pam Krueger, gently questioned two entrepreneurs for a San
Jose start-up about their plans to raise more than $5 million through an
online investment bank, Offroad Capital.

Though it had been rehearsed twice, last month's show had a few moments
of spontaneity: ``So computer graphics are where your deep roots are?''
Krueger asked Ross Smith, vice president of the start-up, Quantum3D, a
graphics chip maker. ``That and Texas,'' he shot back.

But the Webcast, known as the ``offroad show,'' wasn't intended for the
idly curious or daytime Web surfers. It was a fundamental ingredient in a
new way of investing.

시간을 주체하지 못해 인터넷에 몰두하는 사람들을 위한 프로그램이 아니었다.

In Quantum3D's case, Offroad executives and company officials came to an
agreement relatively quickly, though Smith says ``they managed to ratchet
us down a little on valuation.''
이 퀀텀과의 계약건에서 오프로드는 비교적 빨리 합의했다.
The value of the company was put at $86 million, which means that
Quantum3D was selling a little less than 6 percent of the company in the
Offroad deal.

To some degree, the Quantum3D officials were purchasing the services of
an intermediary. They didn't have to go on an expensive private tour,
stopping for pitches in 10 cities. Instead, the Quantum execs did it by
Webcast.

For that matter, they didn't have to print a prospectus or organize

All that was done on the Web, too. If investors had questions, the
Quantum3D people answered them by e-mail.

The company even demonstrated the razzle-dazzle of its chips on a
videotape made available to shareholders.

For the neophyte, what sets Offroad apart is its use of technology. After
joining, an investor can actually order the shares over the Net.
