[比較] look, see, watch
ex) look for violets in the spring(봄에 오랑캐꽃을 찾다)/ He refused to look in the mirror the nurse gave him.
ex) I am looking, Mother, I can't see it anywhere.
ex) animals able to see in the dark/ Once over the pass you will see the town below you.(저 고개만 넘어서면 아래에 그 마을이 보인다.)
ex) watch while a procession passes/ watch something as closely as a cat watches a mouse.

[比較] stop, cease, pause, quit, discontinue, desist
My watch stopped./ Oh! do stop talking that way!
The war had ceased./ All life has ceased.
The noise stops(or ceases)처럼 할 수 있다. One stops a car에서 cease를 쓰려면, One ceases driving a car처럼 한다.
He paused to tie his shoe.
He quit his job for a better position.
quit에는 stop의 뜻과 cease의 뜻이 있어, He quit working이라고 하면, stopped working(<그 날 하루의 일 따위> 일을 그만두었다)의 뜻도, ceased working(일을 아주 그만 두었다, 은퇴했다)의 뜻도 된다.
discontinue a business (or a friendship, or a correspondence, or a subscription to a journal, or drinking intoxication liquors)/ He has discontinued the practice of law.
desist from further questioning/ He had made two attempts to shave but his hand had been so unsteady that he had been obliged to desist.

[比較] warrant, warranty, guarantee, guaranty
warranted silverware/ I warrant he's telling the truth
The watch is guaranteed for a year.
This does not warrant such expenditures.

Many Americans enjoy saving time.
For this reason, home-shopping is a big business these days, and it's getting bigger.
In most cities, you can watch TV channels that advertise 24 hours a day.
The products they advertise can be ordered by calling a toll-free "800" telephone number and using a credit card.
The products are then sent directly to the customers home.

When I was growing up, television wasn't encouraged ― but I was permitted to watch return of “I love Lucy.”
And did I ever love her!
When I was six, I asked my father, a minister in San Diego, to arrange a meeting with my idol.
He tried reasoning with me, but I didn't listen.
Papa paused, looked me straight in the eye and said, “I want you to be real.”
Over the years Papa's words became increasingly important to me.
Being ‘real' meant knowing who I was, being true to myself, and standing up for my beliefs.
그러나 나는 “I love Lucy.”

The amount of money that marketers spend to advertise their products on television depends on two factors: the time the ad appears and the estimated number of people who will watch that program.
For example, advertisements shown on Monday through Friday during the day cost less than those that appear in prime-time.
Prime-time ads are more expensive because the audience for the ads is larger.
In addition to the time of the ad, the popularity of the television program makes a difference in the cost.

People can now watch a great variety of video tapes at home on the VCR.
Materials available include everything stocked at the local video store and movies or any other programs from the 24-hour selections on television, as well as tapes made at home or borrowed from friends.
Such entertainment in the home is also more affordable than it is in public places.
The greater convenience of watching tapes at any hour and pausing a tape or finishing it at a later time makes entertainment possible for people who have very limited opportunities to go to the movies or watch television.
The VCR also enables family and friends to be together in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying one another’s company and also communicating in a way that is not possible in a movie theater.

Some people felt that the city playground was falling apart.
They wanted to make it into a nice, safe place for children to play.
One mother put this note in the newspaper.
“Wanted: People to fix a city playground.
We need people to paint and build, to watch the children, and to make food for the workers.
Call 123-1234 if you can help.”
On the work day, many people came to the playground.
Some painted the swings.
Others built a sandbox, tables, and benches.
People planted bushes and flowers.
When it was all done, everyone was proud of the new playground.

Arthur Ashe was the first African American to become a world tennis champion.
He was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1943.
His father supervised the tennis courts in a park near their home.
As a young boy, Arthur liked to watch the tennis players.
Ron Clarity, one of the players, taught Arthur how to play tennis.
Arthur's dream was to join the U.S. Davis Cup Tennis Team.
But, in Richmond, at that time, most tennis courts were for white people only, and all the tennis officials were white.
They did not encourage Arthur to play.
However, he did not let them stop him from playing.
Arthur Ashe

The story goes that Alfred once took refuge in the cottage of a poor
peasant. The good wife was left in ignorance of his identity and therefore had
little time for this seemingly idle fellow. For Alfred spent his time gazing
into the fire and dreaming of further plans to defeat the Danes. Called upon
some errand, the good wife drew his attention to some cakes which were baking in
front of the fire, and told him that he must watch them carefully during her
absence. Alas! So preoccupied was the English king that the good wife found, on
her return, nothing but a few remains of her cakes. Whereupon, the angry woman
seized the royal hair and proceeded to scold him severely. So runs the story.
Whether it is truth or legend we cannot confirm.

Social change for the better happens when groups of citizens try to bring
it about. Today, such groups can take on many tasks once performed by
governments. These so-called non-governmental organizations deliver
social services. They are active in various areas from law to medicine.
They watch and influence what governments do at home or abroad. What is
more, they often work better than governments. This is because they are
able to use people from all walks of life.

Allen Pearson, who headed a forecast center for years, tells about a
lady who was not pleased with the warning system. "She called me up to
protest that the tornado watch had kept her in her basement for five
hours, and nothing happened, " says Allen Pearson. "I tried to explain
that we did not want to alarm her; we just wanted her to be aware.
Unfortunately, the same thing happened again five months later. She was
really angry that time; we had given a warning, but there was no tornado.
She would no longer believe us."

I like to watch us play.
And baby,I've got on what you like
Come

The First time
Surface
You know I won't forget
The times we shared together holding hands
And walking in the park
Sometimes we'll have to do it all again
We were so happy then
I have no regrets
Can't you tell from the look on my face
That I love you more today
**
The first time I looked into your eyes I cried
Do you remember the first time
When we fell in love
You looked into my eyes wiped the tears away
The first time when we fell in love
-
Although some time has passed
I still remember just like it was yesterday
But time is movin' fast
The love I have for you time won't ever change
I'll always feel the same now until the end
Memories we share will live forever
Deep inside my heart I know I'll never forget
** repeat twice
-

Against all odds
How can I just let you walk away
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cause we shared the laughter
and the pain and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
There's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
-
Take a good look at me now
There's just an empty space
And you coming back to me
Is against all the odds
And that's what I got to take
-
I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
There's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
-
Take a good look at me now
There's just an empty space
But to wait for you is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face
-
Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing there
And you coming back to me is against all the odds
And that's what I got to take
-
Take a good look at me now
-

I saw that. Said it caused mudsides to bury a town.
I guess it had been raining for a week.

The report talked about how globalization had, for example, opened markets for Sierra Leone's diamonds, Sudan's oil and Central Asia's gas―while not improving and sometimes even harming human rights in those countries.
But Gary Hufbauer, a trade expert at the Institute For International Economics in Washington, countered that globalization has lifted per capita income worldwide, a factor associated with increased freedom and quality of life.
Countries like Sierra Leone and Sudan aren't fair examples of globalization, he said, because they are not fully involved in the globalized economy.
Human Rights Watch Executive Director Kenneth Roth said the report is "not an anti-globalization document," it simply recognizes the drawbacks of a world economy.

Its principal function is that of providing safety from predators, partly
because the flock can rely on many pairs of eyes to watch for enemies, and
partly because if one bird reacts to danger, the whole flock is warned.

What type of person are you?
Have you ever let your fear of failure become so big that you've stopped yourself from joining in on life?

Research shows that people who watch a lot of TV are influenced by its unrealistic representation of sex roles.
For example, there are many more male characters than females by three to one on prime-time TV.
Also, men play a far greater variety of roles than women.
In addition, fewer than 20 percent of married mothers on television work outside the home; in real life, over 50 percent do.
No wonder so many TV viewers agree that "women should run their homes and let men run the country."

I went for the watch.

Chandler, we've been here for an hour doing this! Now watch, it's easy.

Folks, when we come back we'll be talking about her new book, 'Euphoria Unbound': the always interesting Nora Tyler Bing. You might wanna put the kids to bed for this one.

Ok, ok, Roger was creepy, but he was nothing compared to Pete Carney.
Which one was Pete Carney?

Remember that guy who used to cry every time we had sex.
"Was it good for you?"
Yeah, well, I'll take a little crying any day over

A party is a party.
And the bigger the party, the less time for bad sex.
Would you stop saying that.
- Okay. - Hank and I have great sex -- all the time.
We'll probably have sex after the party, or during the party.

I'm sure she is.

No pain, no gain, right? It's not just for your father. You believe it, too, right?

The moment it happens.

We watch the surgeries and the attending asks us questions
and we have to answer them. It's not easy.
I have to be on top of my game 100% of the time. It's incredibly difficult.

So you don't actually do anything?
Yes, I do.

No, l... and watch the real doctors work. I am a real doctor.
No, you're not. You said you just stand there. You said you don't do anything.
No, I didn't... no, you said I didn't do anything.

Real doctors save lives, georgie.

I mean, if you're just standing there...

We work 18 hours a day,6 days a week, 50 weeks a year.
We don't really have any time for our families.
We don't have friends that aren't doctors.
But we have this one day,
one day where we get to be like everybody else.
One day to be normal.
A day where. nobody lives and nobody dies on our watch.
It's like a gift.

[John's Diary]
Most of those in line looked like students enjoying their
vacation. Further up the road, I could see Jill in front of
the ticket box looking at her watch impatiently and biting
her lips as if to swear she would kill me. I sighed. I
definitely knew what was about to come my way. Jill wouldn't
stop yelling and grumbling. I promised her not to be late
again and begged for mercy, like a dog. I said God would
strike me down if I was lying, but she wouldn't believe me.
The second showing of the movie had already started and we
were denied admission. I had a real hell of a day. Plan ahead
John. Good night.
1. Further up the road:
I saw him further down the road.
3. Biting her lips as if to swear:
He rolled up his sleeves as if to physically chastise them.
4. Come my way: 내 길로 오는 거니까, 내게 닥칠 것이라는 말입니다.
I knew a steak of bad lucks would come my way.
5. Grumbling: Grumble
6. God would strike me down if I was lying:
7. The second showing of the movie:
8. We were denied admission:
We were denied access.
9. Hell of a day: Hell of something
