ex) Mr. Kim and I had a date for Saturday, but never came to get me. Now he just told me a cock-and-bull story about thinking that our date was on Sunday.

[比較] remark, comment, observation
remark는 잠깐 지나는 결에 본 것, 처음으로 읽은 것, 잠시 주의를 끌었던 것 따위에 대한 짤막한 소견·판단으로, 말이나 글로 된 다소 우발적인 표현이다. 이 말에는 최종적인 또는 곰곰이 생각한 판단의 뜻은 들어있지 않다.

comment는 판단을 나타내거나 어떤 특별한 점을 설명하는 것이나 무엇을 설명·비평·해석하는 말을 뜻한다.

One of two things will happen:

If you mull something over, you think about it for a long time before

(1) worsen : If a situation worsens, especially one that is already

(ex) As the crisis deepened it became clear that the government was
losing control.
(4) go downhill : to start getting worse, especially after a particular
time or a particular event
(ex) My career has gone downhill since my illness.
(5) go down the tubes : an informal expression meaning to very quickly
get worse until nothing can be done to save a situation or make it
better again
(ex) Our marriage was going down the tubes, and there was nothing I
could do about it.
(6) aggravate : to make a bad or difficult situation even worse
(ex) This existing situation was aggravated by the Gulf war.

Defoe heard about what the sailor had done to survive in the desert island.
Defoe used the sailor's adventures as a model to write his story.

Yesterday evening my son came in to ask if I felt like playing ball with him.

Once I began writing my essay at 2:30 a.m.
At that time, I was proud of my material I had gathered.
However, after handing in my essay, I began to worry about what I had actually written.

About ten minutes later, a police car came.
Linda gave a description of the thief.
She said that he looked about twenty-five years old.

Severe weather is a constant possibility all over the globe, but we never really expect our own area to be affected.
However, last night was different.
About ten o'clock, a tornado hit Lucedale.
This violent weather destroyed nine homes near the downtown area.
In addition to these nine houses that were completely destroyed, many others in the area had heavy damage.
Amazingly, no one was injured in last night's terrible storm.
Because of the rapid reaction of state and local weather watchers, most of the area's residents saw the warnings on television.

My literature class was talking about the implications of a scientist's statement

One mid-July day I visited Inner Mongolia.
There were endless fields of wild flowers.
Of 1,000 species of wild flowers, 500 herbs are used to make Chinese medicines.
About 80% of all Chinese herbal medicines are from this area.
We stayed in a Mongolian tent.
The grassland around the tent was a sea of forget-me-nots, though different from the ones I know in Korea.
Their leaves and stems seem lean and weak, yet are as hard as wires.
This is to protect them from the long, dry, cold, and windy winter, and to help them to survive through to the spring.
The blue flower is like the 'dew of the stars.'

우리일행은 몽고식 텐트에서 머물렀다.
텐트 주변의 초원은 비록 그 종류는 내가 한국에서 알고 있는 그것들과는 달랐지만 물망초로 바다를 이루고 있었다.
그 물망초들의 잎과 줄기는 기울어지고 연약해 보였지만, 철사만큼이나 단단해 보였다.
이것은 건조하고 추운 바람이 부는 긴 겨울날씨로부터 자신들을 보호해주고 봄까지 생존할 수 있도록 해준다.
물망초의 파란 꽃은 ‘별의 이슬'과 같다.

When I first opened “Body Shop” in 1976
my only object was to earn enough to feed my children.

There is a famous story about a faithful dog named Shep.
When his master died, Shep followed the coffin to the train station.
The next day, he began to wait for his master at the station and all he wanted was to see him again.
Day after day, he expected to see him step out of the train but to no avail.
Five years later, when his wait ended, people buried him at the station and built a statue in his memory.

Because of Henry's unshakable mental attitude, he was able to appear on a TV show and said as follows:

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.

One day before people knew about coffee, a young goatherd noticed that his herd did not come home the previous night.
So he set out to look for them.
After searching around, this young goatherd finally found his herd.
Though he was relieved to find them, he was still concerned for their health,
for a normally calm and boring herd of goats was now dancing and jumping.
On further investigation he found that goats were consuming red berries growing on nearby plants.
Feeling rather tired, he tried the berries and found them to be quite bitter, yet strangely good.
Soon he did the same thing.

After many years, critical attention has finally been paid to the portion of the Miss America pageant called the swimsuit competition.
Thankfully, people are beginning to complain about this event.
In 1996, a telephone poll was conducted to determine if the swimsuit competition should remain.
Although the majority of callers voted to keep it, a good portion was critical and argued that the swimsuit competition should be eliminated.
The question will undoubtedly be raised again, and the next time the answer may well be different.
Let's hope so, because this portion of the pageant only lowers the dignity of women.

Jennie Ruiz is a computer genius.
When she was only four years old, she began using her brother's computer.
