Benjamin Franklin once worked as a printer.
From his work, he realized how difficult it was to make books.
However, he really enjoyed reading and wanted to get as many books as he could.
Franklin came up with a good idea - to set up a club where people could share their books.
At last, fifty members joined the club in 1732.
The club members were allowed to take the books home with them.
This club, called Franklin's Club, is said to be America's first circulating library.

Some time ago, a few of my friends and I went I to the beach by bus.
Somehow on that day I felt that I did not want to get wet.
I did not know why, but I had no wish to go swimming.
So I sat down on the straw mat that we had brought and spread out on the sandy beach.
I just wanted to relax and see the waves break on the seashore.

Some young children were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up.
Jimmy said he wanted to be a *philanthropist.
When the other kids asked him to explain, he replied, “I heard they're the guys who have all the money.”
Jimmy was only partially right.
According to the dictionary, a philanthropist is “one who loves and seeks to benefit mankind.”
Simply having a lot of money, then, doesn't make one a philanthropist.
In fact, a poor person who “loves and seeks to benefit mankind” out of his limited resources
is more of a philanthropist than a person of great wealth who is a miser.

The first organized system for sending messages began in Egypt around 1500 B.C.
This system developed because the pharaohs frequently needed to send messages up and down the Nile River.
They wanted to keep their empire running smoothly.
Later, the Persians developed a more efficient system for sending messages using men and horses.
Message carriers rode along the road system stretching from one end of the Persian Empire to the other.
Along these roads, fresh men and horses waiting at special stations took the messages and passed them on to next carriers.

A mother wanted to teach her daughter a lesson on money.
So she gave her little daughter a quarter and a dollar for the church,
"Put whichever one you want in the collection basket and keep the other for yourself," she told the girl.
When they were coming out of church, the mother asked her daughter which amount she had given.
"Well," said the little girl, "I was going to give the dollar, but just before the collection,
the priest said that we should all be cheerful givers.
I knew I'd be a lot more cheerful if I gave the quarter, so I did.

There is a famous story about a faithful dog named Shep.
When his master died, Shep followed the coffin to the train station.
The next day, he began to wait for his master at the station and all he wanted was to see him again.
Day after day, he expected to see him step out of the train but to no avail.
Five years later, when his wait ended, people buried him at the station and built a statue in his memory.

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.
Taylor

When I was studying for my doctorate at the University of Southern California,
I spent every weekend in my study that I had established in our garage.
One Sunday a friend took my family to Disneyland.
They phoned me from there: “Hey, John! I bet you wish you were here with us!”
First, I grumbled at them.
Then I felt sorry for myself, sitting alone in a hot garage while others were having fun.
And then I reminded myself why I was there.
I wanted to be Dr. Anderson.
I enjoyed the thought of myself as Dr. Anderson.
Ignoring the temperature and the phone call, I went back to work.

One day, Marsha went into the forest to pick some berries because she wanted to make a pie for her grandparents.
She soon got lost, so she stopped at a house to ask for help.
Unfortunately, a bear lived there.
He made Marsha stay to clean and cook.
Marsha wondered how she could escape.

However, the language sounds strange to me.
They mix Chinese characters, Japanese characters, numbers, and symbols in a strange way,
and I can’t figure out what they are trying to say.
It is a scary thing.
Beyond distorting and abbreviating words, it completely destroys the existing language.
Some people say I shouldn’t take it so seriously.
They think it’s funny and it’s just a trend among young people online.
At any age, the young generation has always wanted to create its own world, separate from the older generations.

Far into the forest stood a little pine tree.
Since it had plenty of fresh air and sunshine, it grew well.
When Christmas came, many young trees were cut.
“Where are they going?” the pine tree asked.
“They are going to the town,” twittered the sparrows.
“There they are dressed in gold and silver and placed in the middle of warm rooms and the children worship them.”
“How I wish that would happen to me!” sighed the tree.
“My sweet, you already have real blessings!” said the sun, but the tree did not understand.
The pine tree was restless and impatient and always wanted to get away.

Some people felt that the city playground was falling apart.
They wanted to make it into a nice, safe place for children to play.
One mother put this note in the newspaper.
Wanted: People to fix a city playground.
We need people to paint and build, to watch the children, and to make food for the workers.
Call 123-1234 if you can help.”
On the work day, many people came to the playground.
Some painted the swings.
Others built a sandbox, tables, and benches.
People planted bushes and flowers.
When it was all done, everyone was proud of the new playground.

Conversation can be on two levels―the content one and the feeling one.
For example, yesterday my friend Scott came over and told me what Ann had done to him.
I started to tell him why I thought Ann acted that way and Scott got angry and started fighting with me.
After he left, I realized that he didn't really want me to explain why Ann was that way,
but he wanted someone to understand his feelings because no matter why Ann did it, she really hurt him.
I probably should have said something like, “She really made you mad, didn't she?” and waited until the next day to talk about it.

When Angela moved to our small town, everything started to change.
At the time, some members of the town's swimming club, including myself, were preparing for the National Championships,
which were just six months away.
I had always been the best, and everyone thought that I would be chosen for the relay race.
But now I had the new competition.
There was only one place for the butterfly on the relay team, and we both wanted it.
For two weeks it was awful.
Angela was always the star.
She was faster than I, and her form was better, too.
My chances of being selected were disappearing fast.
My fear caused me to be unfriendly to Angela.
I refused to speak to her and never said anything good about her.
Angela

She was born in England in 1821, and emigrated to New York City.
One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor.
That was almost impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century.
After writing many letters seeking admission to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a medical school in Philadelphia.
After graduating from the medical school in 1849, she wanted to become a surgeon.
Unfortunately a serious eye infection forced her to abandon the idea.
She found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman.
In 1857 she and her sister, also a doctor, along with another female doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children.
Besides being the first female doctor and founding her own hospital, she also established the first medical school for women.

My family and I lived in an apartment until last spring.
We weren't happy there because the building was crowded and noisy.
We decided to move.
Finally, my husband and I found a small house in a neighborhood that wasn't bad.
The problem was the house itself.
The wallpaper was horrible; there were scenes of hunting all over the bedroom walls!
The porch and roof needed repairs.
The garden consisted of weeds, and a few half-dead plants with insects all over them.
When our kids first saw their new home, they burst into tears.
I understood that.
I wanted to cry, too.

After the fall of the medieval world view, we in the west suddenly became aware that we lived in a totally unknown universe.
In attempting to understand the nature of this universe we knew we had to somehow separate fact from superstition.
In this regard we scientists assumed a particular attitude known as scientific skepticism, which in effect demands solid evidence for any new assertion about how the world works.
Before we would believe anything, we wanted evidence that could be seen and grabbed with the hands.
Any idea that couldn't be proved in some physical way was systematically rejected.

Reading a book is a kind of conversation.
You may think that it is not, because the author does all of the talking, and you have nothing to say; but if you think that, you do not realize your duty as a reader―and you are not using your opportunities.
Actually, the reader is the one who has the last word.
The author has said what he wanted to say, and then it is the reader's turn.
The conversation, however, should be an orderly one, with first one talking and then the other.

"I came," the second man replied, "because my son was taking saxophone lessons."

When I reached Richmond, I was completely out of money.
I had not a single acquaintance in the place; and, being unused to city ways, I did not know where to go.
I applied at several places for lodging, but they all wanted money, and that was what I did not have.

My husband's schedule changed, and we had to adjust to getting ready for work at the same time.

I was running late and hollered after him, "Come back! I need a squeeze."
After he gave me a long, ardent embrace, I hated to tell him all I had wanted was some toothpaste!

Eva felt very sorry for her next-door neighbor, Elaine.
The two women had been living next to each other for years and had become close friends.

Eva had never forgotten the emotional support of her friend, and she strongly believed that one good turn deserves another.

Now Elaine was quite ill, so Eva made a point of spending the days with her friend, tending to her needs and helping to nurse her back to health.

Last weekend the Taylors celebrated their wedding anniversary by going to dinner in a fine restaurant.

One day Sally, an American student, went to a party in England.
Her English friends, Betty and Joan, were engaged in a serious conversation.
She was curious and walked over to them.
Approaching them, she overheard Betty say, "I lost quite a bit."
As Betty was quite overweight and had been trying to lose weight for some time, Sally wanted to know how much Betty had lost.
Breaking into the conversation, she asked, "May I ask how much you lost?"
Betty replied rather abruptly, "Fifty pounds or so.
I'm not sure exactly how much."
Sally was surprised.
Later, however, she learned that Betty had lost a lot of money at a fancy department store.

I went to public school, and because of my total lack of interest and non-attendance I was asked to leave.
I didn't want to go there in the first place.
I was taken away from all my friends.

My father must have been very pleased to get me into the school, but in the end it was a complete waste of money.

If he does come to see me, he's in completely the wrong clothes for the country ― fur coats, nice little leather shoes, not exactly ideal for long walks across the fields.

Robots are entering into all kinds of activities.
They've even taken up hunting in some places.
Most states of the United States have very strict laws to limit the hunting of deer.
Some hunters, however, do not obey the laws and try to kill too many deer.
So, the forest services have developed a robot that looks and acts just like a deer.

But if a hunter tries to shoot it, the police come out from the woods and check his hunting license.

The hunter may have wanted to get a deer, but, instead the deer has gotten the hunter.

In the dictionary of youth there is no such word as "fail." Remember the story
about the boy who wanted to march in the circus parade? When the show came to
town, the bandmaster needed a trombonist, so the boy signed up. He hadn't
marched a block before the fearful noises from his horn caused two old ladies to
faint and a horse to run away. The bandmaster demanded, "Why didn't you tell me
you couldn't play the trombone?" And the boy said, "How did I know? I never
tried before."

One evening, my sister-in-law's family decided that they would fly the American flag
every day instead of just on special days. The next morning they carried out
that decision.
Soon after the flag was placed in the bracket on the porch, there was a knock on the
front
door. When my sister-in-law answered it, she found the mailman standing there. Pointing
to the flag, he asked, "Why is the flag flying today?"
After listening to the explanation, the mailman walked away saying, "Thanks. I just
wanted to make sure I wasn't working on my day off."

From the classical philosophers I turned to the moderns, thinking that
among them, perhaps, I should find what I wanted.

Legend has it that John F. Kennedy decided to enter politics one evening after a
long conversation with his father. Joe, Sr. was supposed to have told Jack that since
Joe, Jr. had given his life for his country during the war, it was now up to
Jack to uphold the family's tradition of political public service. The entire family would support Jack, his
father said. And as the story goes, Jack heeded his father's urging, and decided to enter politics on
the spot.
But the truth is somewhat different. Certainly there was a political tradition in
the Kennedy
family. To be sure, Joe, Sr. wanted to see this tradition carried on, and certainly
he felt it
should be carried by Jack since Joe had died. But this is all too simple

Johnson and Truman never figured out what they wanted, so they never
made up their minds how to fight.

Law gave birth to the concept of freedom. It is true that you can have no
security in a situation in which every person and everything around you acts
capriciously, unpredictably, or, in other words, lawlessly; but the point I wish to
make
is that while you would have no security in such an environment, it is more
important that you would have no freedom in such an environment. The reason you could
not be free in such a situation is that you could not get anywhere you wanted to go
or successfully do anything you wanted to do.

An elderly man on the beach found a magic lamp. He picked it up and a genie
appeared. "Because you have freed me," the genie said, "I will grant you
a wish."
The man thought for a moment and then responded, "My brother and I had
a fight 30 years ago and he hasn't spoken to me since. I wish that he'll
finally forgive me."
There was a thunderclap, and the genie declared, "Your wish has been
granted. You know," the genie continued, "most men would have asked for
wealth or fame. But you only wanted the love of your brother. Is it because
you are old and dying?"
"No way!" the man cried. "But my brother is, and he's worth about $60 million."

Our young daughter had adopted a stray cat. To my distress, he began to
use the back of our new sofa as a scratching post. "Don't worry," my
husband reassured me. "I'll have him trained in no time."
I watched for several days as my husband patiently "trained" our new pet.
Whenever the cat scratched, my husband deposited him outdoors to teach
him a lessen.
The cat learned quickly. For the next 16 years, whenever he wanted to go
outside, he scratched the back of the sofa.

Having put on a good deal of weight since graduation, I couldn't decide
whether I wanted to go to my class reunion and subject myself to the
