Another solution to the dangerous energy situation is to improve our conservation efforts.
For example, we have to turn off the lights in rooms that we are not using.
It would also help if we walked or used public transportation more.
Unfortunately, improvements in both conservation and efficiency are only temporary solutions.
Because they do not explain what we will do when fuels run out.

Linda was walking home from work one day last month, when she saw a man who was trying to break into a car.
She asked him what he was doing.
Then he said to her, "Get lost!"
She ran to a nearby shop and asked the owner to call the police, which he did immediately.
When she went outside again, she saw that both the thief and the car had gone.
About ten minutes later, a police car came.
Linda gave a description of the thief.
She said that he looked about twenty-five years old.
A few days later she found out that the thief had been caught and that the car had been returned to its owner, undamaged.
Linda was glad to be able to help.

UNICEF reported that Korean children are most exposed to ¡°death by traffic accidents¡± among OECD countries.
It announced that Korea ranks first with 25.6 deaths for every 100,000 children.
Many drivers in Korea ignore traffic lights and drive dangerously.
In Korea, 71% of the children die by getting struck by cars while walking.
If we observe traffic regulations and keep safe driving in mind, the nation can save about 12,000 young lives each year.

In 1988, the United States suffered one of the worst droughts in history.
As weeks went by without rain, crops died and river levels fell.
Conditions were so bad that ships were unable to travel on the Mississippi River.
As the water levels fell, the remains of old boats ¡ª Civil War gunboats, barges, and even a steamboat ¡ª were disclosed!
In some places the once-sunken boats were left high and dry, and archeologists could walk right up to them.
By studying the boats, these scientists were able to learn a great deal about day-to-day life on the barges and steamboats of the past.

After the wars in Iraq, many of us struggle with how to build peace in the world today.
The organization of local residents, Community Voices, invites all residents in this city to join us in a peace walk this Sunday.
The walk will begin at 1:00 p.m. in front of City Hall and proceed along Route 140 to Foxboro Park.
At the end of the walk a short peace ritual and a musical performance will be led by local artists.

When my grandmother began to have problems in seeing, hearing and walking, a number of family meetings were held.
We discussed what we should do for her.
We talked of placing her in a nursing home, but that idea was quickly given up.
Although my grandmother would be with more people of her own age, she would see even less of her family, and that would break her heart.
Mother would not allow her own mother to grow old and weak in a strange place.
She said, ¡°I will not let Grandmother end up in a nursing home,¡±
and I admire my mother greatly for this decision.
It was not an easy decision for her.
When so many others are running away from the problem of what they should do about their old parents, my mother stands out remarkably.

While we're traveling, we normally spend only a second looking at everyday objects.
The day races past us without our really being aware of it.
The average time we spend looking at things has been steadily decreasing during the last fifty years.
We say that the world is going faster, but that might be because we are perceiving it faster.
Just try looking at objects for at least five seconds.
You can do this when you're walking or looking out of the car.
You'll find that five seconds is a long time.
This slight increase in the time we take to observe things can increase our passion for life and the quality of life.

School location can influence children's physical health.
When new schools are built at a long distance from where their families live, children need to be driven to school,
and they are deprived of an opportunity for exercise.
On the other hand, if schools are located within walking or biking distance from where they live,
and if safe routes to school are provided, then children can make walking or biking a part of their daily lives,
establishing good habits that can last lifetime.
Besides, when new schools are built, it is considered whether the places where new schools will be built provide plenty of light and fresh air.

It was a very hot day in the middle of summer, and there were no trees along the street.
Mr. Read closed his shop at half past five, and went out into the street and began walking to the bus stop.
He was very fat.
The sun shone straight down the street, and in a few minutes Mr. Read felt very hot.
A little girl came out of another shop.
The girl stayed very near him all the time, and she kicked Mr. Read's shoes several times.
Mr. Read looked at her angrily each time.
After the fourth time, Mr. Read stopped, turned round and said to the little girl,
¡°What are you doing? Stop following me like that!¡±
¡°I'm sorry, but don't stop me, please!¡± the little girl said.
¡°It's very hot today, and there isn't any shade anywhere else in the street!¡±

Thirty to forty years ago, doctors told mothers to lay babies face down to sleep so they would not choke on vomit.
Nowadays, doctors say babies should sleep on their backs.
Moms of the 1960s and 1970s also believed that wheeled baby walkers helped their children learn to walk.
Now, though, doctors say that walkers actually hinder babies' walking.
Decades ago, mothers bathed their infants daily.
Today's doctors say babies need baths only about twice a week.
In the 1960s and 1970s, mothers believed that their babies could sleep well only in complete silence.
Today, however, doctors advise parents to help their babies learn to sleep with background noise.

Sleepwalking and sleep-talking seem to be different sleep disorders.
Sleepwalkers are capable of walking down stairs or out of doors, all the while remaining fast asleep.
Sleep-talkers, in contrast, stay still, but they effortlessly carry on long conversations.
To be sure, what they say doesn't make any sense.
Yet despite the differences, there are some similarities between the two sleep disorders.
During their walking or talking hours, neither sleepwalkers nor sleep-talkers remember what happened the night before.
Also, both disorders appear to be passed down from parents to children.

College is totally different from high school because you are on your own.
I cannot stress too much about the idea of learning independence.
You discover so much about yourself in college.
There is no one to walk you to class.
You need to motivate yourself because there is no one to make you do your schoolwork, set your schedule, or get to class on time.
You gain a better sense of self and find yourself maturing when you are away from home.

Children come to kindergarten with a great range of abilities.
Some children are already reading.
On the other hand, some children don't catch onto the reading lesson until they're seven or eight.
These children are perfectly normal, just a little late.
If you are a parent or teacher of one of these children, don't nag.
Instead, soothe yourself and the child by remembering that children learn to walk and talk at different rates, and that late bloomers catch up.
Many problems, such as the inability to concentrate and write letters correctly, are natural to young children and will be outgrown in time.

The U.S. Embassy advises its personnel who travel to the provinces to exercise extreme caution outside the provincial towns during the day and everywhere at night.
Many rural parts of the country remain without effective policing.
Individuals should be especially careful to avoid walking alone after dusk along the beaches.
These beaches are remote and there is a news of women's being attacked in the early evening hours.
The Embassy recommends individuals to travel in groups anywhere in Sihanoukville.
These security precautions should also be taken when visiting the Angkor Wat area.

Bing Crosby writes of an experience he had while traveling by train through the
Southwest many years ago.
Our train was stopped, and we were told there'd be a wait, so I walked up and down
the track behind the train. The rear brakeman, a hard-bitten little Texan, was walking
up and down, too, swinging his lantern. He came up to me and said,"They tell me that
rascal Bim Crosland's aboard. They say he's quite a singer, but as far as
I'm concerned, Larry Ross could run him in a gopher hole."
I agreed with him and thought no more of it. In the morning, there came a knock
on our door. It was the brakeman. He eyed me with a twinkle and said, "You
hoaxed me, didn't you? You're Bim Crosland yourself! Just for that, you've got to
sign my book."
So I signed it:"Bim Crosland."

This would be something remarkable in anyone in any walk of life; but in someone
whose position was humble and obscure it might not be so surprising as it was in a
world-famous statesman who has left a deep mark, and this on the whole world and
not just on his own country. In this great statesman, the lovable human being was not
smothered by the eminent public figure; I should say that, in Nehru, there was not even
the faintest touch of pomposity or self-importance or self-consciousness. He retained the
spontaneity and the buoyancy of youth after he had been carrying for years an unusually
heavy burden of office. It was not till his last years that the unforeseen breach between
India and China began to bow him down under its weight.

But they have a certain power of acting without taking thought. In moments of
supreme crisis the whole nation can suddenly draw together and act upon a species
of instinct, really a code of conduct which is understood by almost everyone,
though never formulated. The phrase that Hitler coined for the Germans,
"a sleep-walking people," would have been better applied to the English.

A Methodist, an Episcopalian and a Catholic were in a boat 25 yards from

The Episcopalian duplicated the exit on the water. Then the Catholic
stepped out and sank. Coming up, he got back in the boat, walked out
and went under again.
One dry friend on shore said to the other, "Do you think we should tell

The processes of creative activity display several striking features.
One of the most frequent is the occurrence of flashes of insight outside
the hours of regular work, during periods of physical activity or at odd
moments of relaxation. So familiar is this phenomenon that many have
taken advantage of it.
Haydn, the great musician, says, "When my work does not advance, I
retire into the chapel and say a prayer; immediately ideas come to me."
Many, like Hamilton, have found that walking encourages the appearance
of ideas.
Many persons devoted to creative work have carried scraps of paper with
them everywhere so that nothing of the precious flashes of revelation
may be lost.

Trying to get my teen-age son to clean his room was a monumental struggle.
Finally I threatened, "If you don't have that room cleaned by Monday,
I'll clean it for you!"
Monday morning came, and it was still a disaster. As he left for school,
I reminded him of my threat. As it happened, I was so busy I never got
to it. When he came home, he walked straight by me without saying a word.
A few moments later he came back into the kitchen, put his arm around
my shoulders and said, "Thanks, Mom, you cleaned my room just the way
I like it."

for the first time to walk in green country. The season was winter, and
everything was wet and muddy. To the adult eye there was nothing to

kneeled in the wet ground and put his face in the grass, and gave
utterance to half-articulate cries of delight. The joy that he was
experiencing was primitive, simple and massive.

A barber got converted one Sunday, so he thought it his duty to speak to
all who came into his shop in future about religion.
Now, the barber was a very fluent speaker on most topics, but when it
came to religion he hardly knew how to begin.
One morning a Mr. Jones came to be shaved. The barber began to shave him.
All at once he said: "Mr. Jones." Mr. Jones looked up, and was so
startled that he got the brush in his mouth.
"Mr. Jones," repeated the barber; but still he could get no further with
his speech.
The barber then walked up to the strap which was hung on the wall, and
began to rub the razor backward and forwards on it.
"Mr. Jones," said he. "Mr. Jones, are you prepared to die?"
It is said that Mr. Jones jumped out of the window.

David was a young man who worked in an office in a big city. His hobby
was trout fishing, but he did not often get a chance to practice it.
Then one summer he decided to have a holiday in a beautiful place in
the mountains where there were a lot of streams.
"I ought to be able to have some good fishing there," he said to himself.
The first morning after he arrived, he walked to the nearest stream
with his fishing-rod.
He saw an old man with his rod standing beside the water.
David said to him, "Good morning, sir. Is this a private stream?"
The old man answered that it was not.
David said, "Why don't you fish here with me, sir?"
The old man answered with a smile, "I should like to, but I'm sorry I can't."
David then said, "Well, it won't be a crime if I catch some fish here,
will it?"
"Oh, no," answered the old man, "it won't be a crime, but it will
certainly be a miracle."

A young woman who was about to wed decided at the last moment to test her
sweetheart. So, selecting the prettiest girl she knew, she said to her,
though she knew it was a great risk:
"I'll arrange for Jack to take you out tonight walk on the beach in the
moonlight, a lobster supper and all that sort of thing¡ªand I want you,
in order to put his faithfulness to the proof, to ask him for a kiss."
The other girl laughed, blushed and assented. The dangerous plot was
carried out. Then the next day the girl in love visited the pretty one
and said anxiously:
"Well, did you ask him?"
"No, dear."
"No? Why not?"
"I didn't get a chance. He asked me first."

Social change for the better happens when groups of citizens try to bring
it about. Today, such groups can take on many tasks once performed by
governments. These so-called non-governmental organizations deliver
social services. They are active in various areas from law to medicine.
They watch and influence what governments do at home or abroad. What is
more, they often work better than governments. This is because they are
able to use people from all walks of life.

For the first three weeks, things ran smoothly. According to your
instruction, I watered the grass every day, before 10 a.m. or after 4
p.m. Also, Mom, I walked the dog four times a day just because you said
it was very important that she be out that many times -- I disagreed, as
you'll recall, but nonetheless I walked her. Yes I was a good boy. But
when Susan, your darling daughter, got home from summer camp, I had to
become a part-time parent. That's when the trouble all started.

Once upon a time there was an island called Lombok. On the island lived
a girl named Munira and her big brother Amin, the fisherman. "There
aren't any more fish around here, Munira," said Amin one day. "They've
all gone away, and I must follow them. Stay here, won't you? Promise me?"
"Of course," answered Munira. "I'll put a lamp in the window every night
for you to come home by." Amin didn't come back that night. Nor the next
night, nor the next. For years, Munira lived on the seashells she
gathered on the beach during the day. She waited by the window with her
lamp at night. The other people of Lombok moved away, one by one. Soon,
Munira was alone. One day Munira's cousin, Zeinab, came to visit her
from the big city. "Come to the city and live with me!" said Zeinab. "I
can't," said Munira. "I can't let the lamp go out." The next night there
was a terrible storm. In the morning, Munira walked along the beach
looking for seashells. Suddenly, she saw her lost brother Amin! He was
covered with seaweed and holding on to his broken boat, but he was alive.
"How did you find your way?" asked Munira. "There were no stars last
night!" "I saw the lamp," he said.

Norman Croucher lost both legs when he was nineteen years old. Then he
had an ambition to become a rock climber. He had to learn to walk first
without the aid of crutches. Once he had achieved this, he started
inventing his own method of rock climbing. Norman's tin legs were his
only supports. All the hard work of climbing had to be done with his
arms. Norman has climbed nearly all the famous peaks in Europe. His
example has encouraged both handicapped and healthy people to attempt the
impossible.

Making rope required room because rope had to be made in a straight
line. Because of space limits, ropemaking was done outdoors at first.
Soon it became necessary to produce rope no matter what the weather was
like. Special buildings were constructed to allow ropemakers to work all
year round. Often these buildings were more than 300 meters long. They
were called ropewalks because workers had to slowly walk the length of
the building backward during the ropemaking operation.

I'm waiting for my blind date. He appears, sees me, and comes
close to me. In a second his brow relaxes, and his eyes brighten. Why is
this man suddenly so cheerful? I already know the reason: it's because
I'm pretty. And does this little scene make me feel great? Well, yes. But
I'm used to it. I've been pretty most of my life. I know this because
people tell me--both directly and in more subtle ways. There is no
denying the effect of my good looks. As I walk by, men turn and react
appreciatively. I haven't figured out why my looks appeal, but I can't
escape this kind of attention.

It's late in the evening
She is wondering what clothes to wear
She puts on her makeup
And brushes her long blonde hair
And then she asks me
"Do I look all right?"
And I say "Yes, you look wonderful tonight"
We go to a party
And everyone turns to see this beautiful lady
is walking around with me
And then she asks me "Do you feel all right?"
And I say "Yes,I feel wonderful tonight"
I feel wonderful
because I see the love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all is
that you just don't realize how much I love you
It's time to go home now
And I've got an aching head
So I give her the car keys
And she helps me to bed
And then I tell her as I turn out the light
I say "My darling you're wonderful tonight
Oh, my darling you're wonderful tonight"
