→ 어떻게 부르면 좋을지 망설이다: have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion

It is not the same as Thanksgiving celebrations, though it includes the thanks for the harvest and the family gathering and eating. Nor is Chusok properly called an autumn moon festival, for the more important meaning to Koreans is to be found in the veneration of the family ancestors. Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.

Shopping for food today is not the same as it used to be.
In the past, every neighborhood had a little food market.

However, this is not true in today's supermarkets.

Computer crime has become a big problem of the world that is likely to continue far into the future.
Computer criminals are often quite different from other kinds of criminals.
According to some experts, these criminals seem to lock themselves away from other people and live in their own fantasy “microworlds.”
They are also generally quite young.
They break into others' computers in order to steal, add, or change information.
For many of them, this is a kind of game, a part of their fantasy life.
However, it is a dangerous “game,” and, as a result, many individuals and corporations are very concerned about computer security.

Ecopsychology is a new area of psychology.
Ecopsychologists study humans and their relationships to the environment.
They feel that the environment is very important to our sense of well-being.
In fact, they believe it is central to our happiness.
If we are going to be happy, we need to connect more with nature.
Children are born with this feeling of connection to nature.
They often spend long periods of time with plants, trees, and insects.

All the children at school love Mr. Rider.
He has worked at the school for a long time.
He cleans the floors and keeps everything neat.
He is very nice to the children, too.
He helps them with their schoolwork and often finds things they have lost in school.
One day the children thought, “Let's do something nice for Mr. Rider.” They bought him a beautiful tie and a pair of socks.
The next morning when he came to work, everyone shouted, “Surprise!”
Mr. Rider said it was the best surprise he ever had.

Every human being will grow older and die.
Aging in itself is not a disease or a sickness, but as people age, disease often follows and the elderly need others' help.
In addition, the percentage of senior citizens in the world has increased very quickly, and our society is no exception.
The problem for us is that we have left the care of the elderly to their families.
We must change our attitude toward this issue and develop more systematic social programs.
The sooner we realize the importance of the role of government in this matter, the smaller the final cost to society as a whole will be.

Patience is one of the virtues that everyone should have.
In our society everything moves fast.
On TV shows, major problems are often resolved in half an hour.
And with millions of people using e-mail, life is moving more and more at “Internet Speed.”
As a result, many people lack this, and they want to have instant satisfaction.
In this fast moving society, this is very important to all of us.

The countryside where I grew up is very isolated.
You can drive along the seaside road for miles without seeing another car.
In all directions you look at, it looks like a breathtaking vista.
The view is especially dramatic, with giant dark cliffs rising out of the water.
Such a remote environment is a perfect place to relax.
It brings out the artist in me.
I often take my paints and a canvas and try to capture the exciting feel of the shoreline.

When we discuss computers, the terms data and information are often used.
Data refers to the raw materials or facts that are gathered and used for input to the computers.
Items such as name, description, year, age, program number, phone number, course number, and so on are all examples of data.
By itself it is not very useful.
Data can be useful only after it has been collected and processed.
Information is data that has been processed and organized into a useful pattern.
The data items can be organized into a student record to provide meaningful information.

The seeds of most plants are very durable.
They often travel long distances and survive harsh weather before they finally take root in soil.
Grape seeds are one good example.
If left on the vine, grapes will dry up and become raisins.
The raisins will eventually drop off the vine, and some of the seeds will be driven into the soil by rain or by animals walking over them.
Many grapes are grown for wine, so they are picked from the vine when ripe.
They are then boiled or crushed to extract their juice.
The farmers then use whatever remains of the grapes as fertilizer.
Amazingly, many grape seeds survive the crushing and boiling.
When they are inside the soil, the grape seeds take root and grow.

Nearly all runaways come from homes in which there are clear problems.
In any case, it is important for parents to be aware of the possibility that their child may run away,
and to be aware of the warning signs that often precede it.
One is a sudden change in behavior.
This change may be one of eating or sleeping habits.
Changes in social habits can also indicate problems, particularly when a teenager becomes withdrawn from friends and outside contacts.
If a young person begins to show sudden mood swings, going from very happy to very sad, for example,
there is a good chance that he or she is undergoing some sort of stress that is difficult to resolve.

Earthquakes themselves are unpredictable.
Although any powerful submarine earthquake can bring a dangerous tsunami, not all such earthquakes actually result in a big wave.
Even though you have an effective detection system, it is useless if you cannot evacuate a threatened area.
Here, speed is of the essence.
Computer modeling can help show which areas are likely to be safest,
but common sense is often the best guide―run like the wind, away from the sea.
Evacuation warnings, too, should be easy to give as long as people are awake.
Radios are very effective to tell people to run.

Social sciences study the area of human behavior.
Human behavior patterns vary from place to place and group to group.
However, natural sciences are somewhat different.
When a chemist studies hydrogen, he can assume that one hydrogen atom is very much like another,
wherever it is found, and that the conditions surrounding it can be quite accurately controlled.
The same is true when a physicist measures a metal bar;
he can be quite sure that it will not stretch or shrink in length as long as natural conditions are the same.
Because of the predictable nature of their subject matter, natural sciences are often called “easy sciences.”
그것은 물리학자가 금속막대기를 측정하는 경우에도 마찬가지이다;

Sometimes the fear is conscious, but very often we repress it entirely.

The only guide to a man is his conscience; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions.
It is very imprudent to walk through life without this shield, because we are so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations;
but with this shield, however the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honor.

The teachers at our Sunday school took turns giving the lesson. Usually
they'd round it off with, "Now, children, the moral of this story is..."
One day, Miss Brown, the teacher whose turn it was, made the story
particularly exciting, and the youngsters were delighted. One boy asked if Miss
Brown might not give the lesson more often. "We like her very much," he
explained, "because she hasn't any morals."

Investigators who have studied very young children in school overwhelmingly present
a grim picture. The child too often stumbles insecurely through kindergarten and the
early grades. His friends who were delayed a year or so quickly catch up and pass him -
usually become most stable and highly motivated. His learning retention frequently
remains lower than that if his later-starting peers, regardless of how bright he is. In
other words, it is hard to escape the conclusion that early schooling is little short
of crippling.

Success often bears within itself the seed of destruction, for it may very
well cut the author off from the material that was its occasion.
He enters a new world. He is made much of. He must be almost super-human if
he is not captivated by the notice taken of him by the great and remains
insensible to the attentions of beautiful women. He grows accustomed to
another way of life, probably more luxurious than that to which he has
been used, and to people who have more of the social graces than those with
whom he has associated before. They are more intellectual and their superficial
brilliance is engaging. How difficult it is for him then to move freely still
in the circles with which he has been familiar and which have given him his
subjects!

I have always wondered at the passion many people have to meet the celebrated.
The prestige you acquire by being able to tell your friends that you know
famous men proves only that you are yourself of small account.
The celebrated develop a technique to deal with the persons they come across.
They show the world a mask, often an impressive one, but take care to conceal
their real selves. They play the part that is expected from them, and with
practice learn to play it very well, but you are stupid if you think that
this public performance of theirs corresponds with the man within.

Growing as a person may take you to new places and present new
challenges. These may be stressful, but feeling stress is a natural,
necessary part of recognizing a weakness and trying out a new behavior.
It is often comfortable and easy to stay the way we are. Giving up old
comforts and habits is very hard. It is small wonder, then, that people
dislike changing. Yet it needs to be remembered that efforts to change
lead frequently to important improvement and growth in our lives.

How often are we introduced to someone only to forget his or her name
moments later? In fact, many times we never knew the name. Today
introductions are made in an unclear manner so that it is very hard to
remember others' names. Forgetting people's names often means we do not
really care about them. When we know their names, we are saying, "You are
important. I remember you." A clear introduction should be made,
therefore, if you want to build good social relationships with others.

My memory is going, but I don't miss it that much. The nice thing is that
I remember mostly good things, and I tend to forget bad ones. For
example, I remember my childhood quite well, because it was really very
happy. I can't remember how old I am, but I seem to remember my birthdays
without any problem. This is strange, because I sometimes forget those of
other people -- especially if I have to dress up or give expensive
presents. I often forget to get up and go to work in the morning.
Fortunately, I seem to remember that I'm retired.

For every plus, however, there is a minus. For one thing, you might
have a job, but unless it is very well-paid, you will not be able to
afford many things because living in a city is often very expensive. What
is more, public transportation is sometimes crowded and dirty,
particularly in the rush hour. Last of all, despite all the crowds, it is
still possible to feel very lonely in a city.

Before we delve into the latest research, let's define a few terms.
Though we all have our own intuitive sense of what the words stress and fear mean, scientists use these words in very specific ways.
For them, stress is an external stimulus that signals danger, often by causing pain.
Fear is the short-term response such stresses produce in men, women or lab rats.
Anxiety has a lot of the same symptoms as fear, but it's a feeling that lingers long after the stress has lifted and the threat has passed.

Northern North America is part of a larger circumpolar ecological domain
that continues across the narrow Bering Strait into Siberia and northern
Europe. The overall circumpolar environment in the 1500's was not very
different from the environment of the present. This vast landmass had a
continental climate and was dominated by cold arctic air throughout a
long winter and spring season. Summer temperature ranged from near
freezing to the mid-20's Celsius, while winter temperature were often as
low as 40 degrees below zero Celsius.

As movie theaters grew in number and importance, a violinist, and
perhaps a cellist, would be added to the pianist in certain cases, and
in the larger movie theaters small orchestras were formed. For a number
of years the selection of music for each film program rested entirely in
the hands of the conductor or leader of the orchestra, and very often
the principal qualification for holding such a position was not skill or
taste so much as the ownership of a large personal library of musical
pieces.

One of the most dangerous illusions about business (or, indeed, any
activity involving human beings and human institutions) is that it can
be treated as a game of perfect information. Quite the reverse.
Business, politics, life itself are games which we must normally play
with very imperfect information. Many a business decision involves odds
that would make a professional poker player shudder, for the number and
extent of the unknown and unknowable factors are themselves often
incalculable. But few organizations find it comfort- able or congenial
to admit that they are gambling, and many still prefer to
delude themselves that they are playing a sober, responsible game of
chess and are not engaged, as is often the case, in a fling at the poker
table.

The human brain responds to sudden fright by signaling the adrenal glands to
release more adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, into the bloodstream. This
substance, often called the "fight or flight hormone," prepares the body for
instant exertion. It makes the heart beat faster, stimulates the circulation,
and relaxes the bronchial passages so they can send more air through the lungs.
It can all happen very quickly because this is the body's life-preserving
response to sudden danger.

A story might begin for Edith Wharton with ether the characters or the
situation. If the situation came fisrt, she was always very careful to let it
lie in her mind until it had brought forth of itself the people it needed. It
was an idiosyncrasy of her creative mind that her characters always came to her
with their names, which she could not chance except at the cost of losing her
hold on that destiny would be expressed. Although her characters were portayed
in many settings and situations, they all reflected, by the often tragic outcome
of their lives, her profound conviction that no human could be happy if that
happiness was rooted in the wretchedness of another.

For perspective on this issue, meet Phil Greer, one of the name partners
in the San Francisco-New York venture firm of Weiss, Peck & Greer.
(Phil
Greer)
A generation ago, in the early 1970s, Greer was one of the early
investors in a struggling young company called Federal Express, then run
by a 20-something entrepreneur, Frederick W. Smith, who had the brash
idea of delivering mail and packages overnight.
Smith had already burned through two substantial rounds of funding in
building his fleet of airplanes. Though the business indicators looked
good, Federal Express's coffers were empty. And it was a day when people
clung to the quaint idea that a company had to show a profit to go
public.
Smith embarked on what became a desperation mission. He gave up half his
company for $4 million, a sum that seems trivial today. Greer, who had
invested in both earlier rounds, stayed with Federal Express for what
became a very lucrative investment for the VC firm. ``I was traveling to
the board meetings fairly often, and I could see things turning
around,'' he says now.
Here's the kicker: Greer still holds some of the original stock from
that round, known as a ``down round'' in VC parlance. ``I hold stock a
long time,'' he explained the other day at a Weiss, Peck & Greer
partners meeting at the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley.

Policeman:I hear that this store is selling cigarettes to juniors.
Owner:What nonsense! Please don't sell me short. I'm not that kind
of person. Somebody must have seen me sell boxes of chocolates to kids.
Policeman:You should be very careful not to sell cigarettes to kids.
It's a serious violation of the law.
Owner:Of course. Of course.
Policeman:Come to think of it, I need to buy a pack of cigarettes.
Owner:Here you are.
Policeman:What's this? Isn't this a chocolate?
Owner:Oh,I'm sorry. I'm often confused.
violation=위반

Jane:My father flipped his lid when he found that I was too late
last night.
Tom:Really?
Jane:Father imposed a 10 o'clock curfew on me.
Tom:Your father is very strict, isn't he?
Jane:I guess so. We won't be able to go out very often.
Tom:Oh, I've got an idea. Before you get out of the house, take the
batteries out of the clock.
Jane:Have you got a few screws loose? You can be the clock.
<어구풀이>flip one's lid:화가 나다(=be pissed).
impose:부과하다.
strict:엄격한.
go out:데이트하다.
get a few screws loose:태엽이 풀리다,제 정신이 아니다. cf)be out of

< ONE CULTURAL DIFFERENCE > by Kevin O'brian
Money is very different in United States.
For example, I know that here, parents will try to pay for the
children's college education but you take it further.
See, after we're 18 or after we graduate college at least,
Americans are very independant people.
Now, most Americans after they leave home, their money is theirs.
They keep it for themselves.
As Koreans tend to live at home until they get married, except
for one they're at army, one they're living at University.
But if they're not in school or not in the army, they usually
live at home but Americans don't.
Americans only go back home if they are in University or if
they're in financial problems, having financial problems in most
cases.
Now here is the most important part.
Koreans usually, young Koreans, they give a lot of money, maybe
all the money I don't exactly, you would know to the home.
They work and get some money to the parents.
That's one of the advantages of children's staying at home but
also the parents really have a lot of controll over the
children's money.
If it's the children's money, parents have a lots of control.
But Americans will pay their parents some if they're living at
home.
They might pay their parents a little bit of extra money.
But often times you live there for free.
Extra money is your money. Your money is yours.
And when you get married, in America your parents try to pay for
the wedding and maybe they will give you a gift.
If you're wealthy, they might give you a house or a car. But all
of them they're very wealthy.
But, in Korea, most parents want to try to pay for the children's
first apartment and furniture.
So, it's much harder for young Americans because basically
they're expected to pay for everything for themselves.

Korean cuisine can offer a few delightful surprises to your taste
buds or it can leave a new sensation in your mouth that you may
not want to experience again.
In encompasses a wide array of dishes that often involves boiling
or stirfrying many different kinds of vegetables and then season-
ing it with garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper, and onions.
Meat dishes are not as common as the aforementioned vegetable one
but when it is grilled or braised and then specially marinated it
is often very quickly devoured.
As you can imagine Korean food ranges in taste from bland to ext-
remely spicy as many of the dishes are seasoned with red peppers.
There are several foods that appear time and time again on the
dining table of a Korean family.
Firstly '밥' or rice steamed plainly or with other grains is the
main dish or the entree for all three meals of the day.
'밥' is the most important food and Koreans have it for breakfast
lunch, and dinner, in contrast to western meals where certain fo-
ods are designated to one of the three meals.
Because rice itself tastes bland it is consumed with '김치' '국'
and other side-dishes called '반찬' that give flavor to the meal.
Koreans eat a whole bowl full of rice and they consider it to be
the main food in any given meal. Without rice, one cannot have a
legitimate meal.
The next important food and porbably the most famous Korean food
is '김치.'
'김치' is an essential part of a Korean meal and this serves as
one of the '반찬' to '밥.'
'김치' is basically made up of cabbages seasoned with red pepper
powder, salt, garlic, ginger, and a few other ingredients.
Thirdly '국' or soup is usually seved with rice and '김치' It can
be prepared to taste bland or hot and a very popular soup called
'된장국' is made up of '된장' or soybean paste, tofu, and a wide
assortment of vegetables.
'국' can be had as a '반찬' or it can be mixed with rice and con-
sumed simultaneously.
These three foods '밥' '김치' and '국' are considered to be esse-
ntial components of a Korean meal.
Along with these foods however, many other '반찬' made of mostly
vegetables and some meat, crowd the table and offer alternative
flavors to the meal.

In the traditional Korean housing '사랑방' was the main room for
the head man of the household where he often studied and received
guests.
'사랑방' was usually furnished with a low writing table, bookshe-
lves, stationary chests, and a smoking tray.
It was often located right next to a garden so that he could have
a nice view from his writing table.
'안방'was the main room for the head woman of the household where
she slept in and ran the household.
It was located towards the center of all living quarters and the
rest of the household recognized this room as the place of central
authority.
This central room was the most lavishly decoreted by various chests
such as '이층장' and '삼층장' this means two and three story
clothing chests respectively.
These chests were of very high quality and in most cases the num-
ber, size and the elaborateness of these chests reflected how
well they were off in the society.
'대청' was the hall that connected the '안방' to the rest of the
rooms.
These wooden floored halls not only served as a link between roo-
ms but it also served as a pantry.
