[比較] journey, voyage, trip, travel, tour
journey는 육로를 이용한 「여행」을 뜻하는 점에서 해상여행을 뜻하는 voyage와 대립한다. 그렇기는 하지만 voyage가 선박만을 이용한 여행을 뜻하는 데 반해서 선박을 이용한 여행이 전 여행의 일부인 경우에는 journey를 쓸 수 있다. 「인생이란 나그네 길」과 통하는 표현으로 life's journey가 있는데, life's journey가 가장 일반적인 의미에서의 여행을 뜻함을 보여준다. trip이 반드시 출발점으로 돌아오는 여행을 뜻하는 데 반해서, journey는 반드시 출발점으로 돌아오는 것을 전제로 하지는 않는다는 점이다. trip은 거리의 장단이나 교통수단과 목적의 여하에 관계없이 가장 자유롭게 쓰이는 낱말이다.

tour는 수학여행이나 관광여행 또는 시찰여행처럼 여기저기 예정된 여러 곳을 돌아다니는 목적을 가진 여행에 쓰인다.

travel은 여행의 총칭으로 쓰이며 「한 장소에서 다른 장소로의 이동」에 초점을 두었으며 trip처럼 출발점에 돌아온다는 전제는 없으며, 여행거리의 장단과도 관계가 없다.

→ arbeit는 독일어로 '연구 업적'이라는 뜻이고 학생 또는 주부의 아르바이트는 part-time job, 사회인이라면 side job이다.

→ enjoy는 타동사이므로 반드시 a vacation등의 명사나 myself등의 재귀대명사를 목적어를 취한다.
cheap의 세가지 뜻.
* Cheap watch! 라고 하면 '시계가 싸다'라고 들리지 않고
'싸구려 시계' 즉 '품질이 좋지 않은 시계'로 들린다.
cheap은 '값이 싸다'란 뜻도 되지만 '싸구려' 또는 '저질이다.'
라는 뜻도 되기 때문이다. 그리고 '짜다' 즉 '구두쇠'라는 뜻도 있다.
ex) He is so cheap that he never gives a penny to charities.
'그는 어찌나 구두쇠인지 자선단체에 땡전 하나도 기부하지 않는다'란
말이 된다. '구두쇠'란 말에는 stingy person, miser, tightwad,
skinflint, skimper, pinchpenny등 많다.
구두쇠의 반대말, 돈을 물 쓰듯 하는 사람은 spendthrift라 하고
씀씀이가 큰 사람 즉 통이 큰 사람은 big spender라 한다.
on the cheap은 '싸게' 즉 '경제적으로'란 뜻이 된다.
ex) This book will tell you how to vacation on the cheap.
'이 책은 경제적으로 휴가를 보내는 방법을 알려 준다.' 는 말이된다.
cheap 자체가 '싸게'란 부사로 쓰이기도 한다.
ex) I had to sell my house cheap to avoid foreclosure.
'집이 은행에 넘어가는 것을 막기 위해 나는 집을 싸게 팔 수밖에 없었다.'

Such control by the law enforcement authorities is necessary but
even more important is the general public's good sense and positive
desire to be moral, voluntarily abide by the rules and maintain public
order. Parents are advised to use the opportunity provided by summer
vacations to teach their children not to litter, not to disturb others with
their raucous games and generally to follow society's rules.

일중독에 걸린(workaholic) 우리나라 사람들의 summer vacation은
1주일도 긴축에 든다. vocation(바캉스)이라는 것은 vacuum(진공)
처럼 아무일도 하지 않은,말하자면 [텅빈 것]이 원뜻이므로 행락지
의 북새통에서 지치고 마는 우리네 바캉스는 아예 바캉스라고 하기
어렵다. 바캉스 때문에 가족들의 서비스를 위해 헌신하다가 지쳐버
린 가장이 의사를 찾아가면 "Well, you need a vocation from
vocation!"이라는 말을 듣기가 십상이다.
holiday 는 HOLY DAY 를 말하여 성스러운 안식일을 가르킨다.
그날은 하루종일 조용히 지내며 정원일은 커녕 성냥도 긋지말라는
엄격한 종파도 있다. vacation 은 미국에서 주로 쓰는 말이며,
vacationeer(행락객),vacationing(바캉스를 지내고 있는) 이라는
말이 있다. 영국에서는 주로 holiday를 쓰며,[행락객]은
holiday-maker,[바캉스를 지내고 있는]은 holidaying 이라고 한다.
