The continuing urbanization causes many serious problems. In
particular, the capital city of Seoul and surrounding areas are the focus
of accelerating population growth and industrial concentration. About
955,000 people commute into the Seoul area for work every day while
518,000 leave the city every morning for work in outlying areas only to
return in the evening.

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become.
With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates.
According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban.
These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban,
while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon.
In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center.
However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”
