When he is very young, a child is usually taught not to lie. By the time
he reaches adolescence, a boy knows that there are times when it is better
to lie (we call it a `white lie') than to tell the absolute, unsparing
truth.
These lies are part of everyday social life, and society would be in
an extremely uncomfortable situation without them.
Thus people tell other people they look fine, or the new dress is pretty,
or they can't come to dinner on a particular night because they're ill,
or any one of a thousand other 'white lies', so that feelings will not
be hurt and so that people can live more comfortably together.
아주 어렸을 때 어린애는 거짓말을 하지 말라고 배운다. 청소년기에 이르면
고지식하게 진실을 말하는 것보다 거짓말 (소위 '선의의 거짓'이라는 것)을
하는 것이 좋을 때가 있다는 것을 알게 된다.
이런 거짓말들은 일상적인 사회생활의 한 부분을 이루며 이런 것이 없다면
사회는 매우 불편한 상태가 될 것이다.
그래서 사람들은 다른 사람에게 건강해 보인다고 하고, 새로 산 옷이 예쁘다고
하고, 몸이 안 좋아서 만찬 파티에 참석할 수 없다는 둥 수많은 '선의의
거짓말'을 한다. 그리하여 감정이 상하지 않고 사람들이 더욱 편하게 서로
어울려 살 수 있는 것이다.
