Stimulating the government to patch together the plan has been the
snowballing deficit in the invisible trade account. During the first five
months of this year, the shortfall more than tripled from last year's $300
million to $930 million and it is expected to soar to $2,500 million by the
end of this year. In the corresponding period, 1.82 million people went
abroad, up 20.8 percent over the previous year, while 1.46 million foreign
tourists visited Korea, down 0.4 percent.

Tumlir warns that strong international cartels in steel, oil and some other
basic commodities are forming or are effectively in place. These are propping up
prices, fueling inflation, restricting trade and limiting growth. This does not
do Western capitalism's image much good, or help the credibility of Western
governments that sometimes quietly encourage the formation of such cartels.

As the American colonies in the seventeenth century prospered and
trade increased among them, an efficient way of hauling goods
overland was needed. The answer was the Conestoga wagon. It had a
boat-shaped body and was suited for mountain trails. No matter how
the wagon was tilted, the cargo stay in place. For feeding the
horses, there was a trough attached to the rear end. A Conestoga had
six or seven overhead bows, or arches, with the ones in the center
being a little lower than the ones on the end. These bows supported a
covering of white canvas that protected the good from the weather.
The wagon was capable of carrying up to eight tons, though for each
ton a horse had to be added to the team.

일반적으로 information은 있는 사실에 대한 객관적인 내용을
가리킨다고 할 때 intelligence는 information을 가공하여
전략적으로 이용할 만한 가치가 있는 형태로 만든 것을
지칭한다고 할 수 있습니다.
몇 달 전 우리 사회를 시끄럽게 만든(that stirred up our
society) 것 중의 하나가 국내 기업의 반도체 제조
기술(semi-conductor manufacturing technology)의 대만
유출(leakage) 사건과 관련된 산업 스파이(industrial espionage
agent) 사건입니다.
국제 무역을 무역전쟁(trade war)이라 표현하는 것이 조금도
이상하지 않은 상황에서 스파이(spy, intelligence agent)라는
말도 자연스럽게 사용되어 산업 스파이라는 용어가 심심찮게
오르내리고 있습니다. 이 부문에서도 여러 가지 관련 용어 및
표현을 걸러낼 수 있는데 오늘은 이와 같은 용어들을 몇 가지
살펴보기로 하겠습니다.
먼저 기본적으로 스파이는 spy 뿐만 아니라 남을 위해서 정보를
빼내오는 대리인이라는 의미에서 secret agent라고 부르는 경우가
더 많으며 그냥 agent라고 부르기도 한다는 사실을 알아두시기
바랍니다. 이러한 spy 활동을 espionage (activity)라 하며
방첩활동은 anti-를 붙여서 anti-espionage라 합니다.
산업 정보의 유출은 leakage를 사용해서 나타내기도 하지만
draining 또는 drainage를 써서 technology drainage라고도
합니다. 기술을 훔치는 것이므로 steal 또는 get away with를
이용해도 무방합니다.

유너바머에 대한 기사입니다. 이 기사 서두에 있는 put behind
bars라는 표현이 생소하더라도 나중에 반복돼 나오는 to be
locked down 을 보면 "갇히다"라는 뜻임을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다.
감금 생활을 하게 된다는 표현을 두개 건진 것이지요.
같은 표현을 피하고 다양한 표현을 쓰는 대표적인 예가 수치의
등락을 나타내는 기사입니다. 예를 들어 다음과 같이 등락을
나타내는 두 문장이 있다고 생각해보지요.
A. Wheat production is expected to diminish by three percent
this year.
B. World trade of cereals is expected to increase by 1.4
million tons to 202 million tons, especially trading in rice,
the report said.
A의 경우는 밀 생산이 줄어드는 걸 뜻합니다. Diminish라는
단어가 한번 나왔으니 다른 생산 품목 수치도 줄어든다면 뒤에
이어질 문장에는 다른 표현이 나오겠지요? 계속 "줄어들 것이다,"
"줄어들 것이다" 할 수는 없으니까. 대부분, fall, drop,
decrease, go down 등을 쓰고, 좀 심할 경우는 nosedive 같은
표현도 쓰지요.
B의 경우는 수치가 올라가고 있습니다. Increase가 나왔으니 또
쓰지 않겠지요. Jump, shoot up, grow, swell, go up 등을 쓸
겁니다.
물론, 동사 표현만 그런 건 아닙니다. 요즘 IMF 시대라 그런지
"위기"라는 말을 너무 많이 쓰지요. 금융 위기, 경제 위기, 산업
위기 등등. 위기도 너무 위기 위기 거리면 참 듣기 싫습니다.
그래서 crisis만 쓰는 것이 아니라, debacle, plight, crunch,
turmoil 등 다양하게 쓰지요.
A record drop in imports helped South Korea reap a 1.6
billion dollar trade surplus in January, boosting hopes for
an early end to its financial crisis, trade officials said
Monday. Customs-cleared exports were up 1.4 percent
year-on-year at 9.16 billion dollars in January, the trade
ministry said. Imports fell a record 39.6 percent
year-on-year to 7.56 billion dollars.
한국의 수입이 사상 초유의 수준으로 줄어듦으로 인해 1월
무역 수지가 16억 달러에 달했으며 이로 인해 금융 위기를 조속한
시일 내에 끝낼 수 있으리라는 희망을 더해 주고 있다고 정부의
한 관리가 (지난) 월요일에 발표했다. 정부(통상산업부)의 발표에
따르면 통관 기준으로 수출은 1월 한달 동안 전년 대비 1.4%
증가한 총 91억 6천만 달러에 달했다. 수입은 동기간에 비해
39.6% 줄어든 75억 6천만 달러에 그쳤다.

무역 수지나 경제 동향을 보도하는 기사는 대체적으로 몇 가지
수순을 밟는데 첫째는 현황, 두번 째는 과거 실적 대비, 그리고
뒤이어 그 원인 및 전망의 순서로 이어지게 되어 있습니다. 상기
예문은 그 중 첫번째에 해당하는 현황 설명의 부분으로서 이런
경우의 진행은 반드시 전년 대비 즉, 지난해의 동기간(the same
period)의 실적과 비교하는 것으로 이루어져 있습니다.
따라서 이와 같은 경우에는 따로 떼어서 외워 두어야 할 부분이
있는데 이는 바로 다음과 같은 것들입니다.
record drop in imports 기록적인 수입감소를 기록하다
record는 우리말의 "기록적인"에 해당하는 표현입니다.
reap a OOO dollar trade surplus
customs-cleared exports 통관기준의 수출액
수출입 금액은 통관을 했느냐 안 했느냐에 따라 달라지므로
반드시 이러한 기준을 명시해서 발표하고 있습니다.
customs-cleared exports (또는 imports)는 보도에서 반드시
접하게 되는 것이므로 주의 깊게 보아 두시기 바랍니다.
were up OOO% 또는 ~ were down OOO%
상기 예문에는 year-on-year와 같이 쓰였지만 compared to the
same period last year라고도 쓰는 경우도 많습니다.
imports fell OOO% to OOO dollars또는 import grew a OOO% to
OOO dollars
이러한 것들은 거의 기계적으로 단어만 몇 가지 바뀌어 나올 뿐
그 틀에서 거의 변함 없이 그대로 등장하는 것들입니다. 한번만
신경 써서 외워 두시면 되는 것들입니다.
이와 같이 현황 설명에 추가로 붙게 되는 것은 다음에서와 같이
이것이 첫번째냐 두번째냐와 같은 기록 경신에 대한 사항입니다.
예문을 보시기 바랍니다.
(예문) It was the third consecutive month that South Korea
posted a trade surplus, following a 200 million dollar
surplus in November and a 2.3 billion dollar surplus in
December.
(해석) 이는 한국이 지난 해 11월 2억 달러 및 12월에 23억
달러에 이어 3개월 연속적으로 기록한 무역수지 흑자이다 (또는
직역을 하자면 흑자를 기록한지 3개월 째 되는 달이다).
여기서 중요한 것은 the third consecutive month 로서
우리말에서 몇 개월 연속 또는 몇 년 연속 등과 같이 말을 할 때
해당되는 표현입니다. 주의를 드리고 싶은 부분은 첫째 정관사
the가 쓰이고 있다는 점과 두번째 서수인 second, third, fourth
등이 나오고 있으며 뒤에 나오는 month 또는 year는 반드시
단수(singular)라는 점입니다. 이와 같이 따로 주의를 주지
않으면 나중에 영작을 할 때 분명히 a third consecutive month
또는 the third consecutive months와 같은 실수를 범하게
됩니다. 반드시 정관사+서수+단수의 형태로 등장한다는 것을 다시
한 번 기억해 두시기 바랍니다.
이와 같이 기록에 대한 설명이 끝나게 되면 나타나는 것은 바로
왜? 무엇 때문에 그와 같은 기록이 나오게 되었는가에 대한
분석과 더불어 향후 전망에 대한 내용입니다. 예컨대 Exports
were led by semiconductors, petrochemicals, machinery and
automobiles (수출을 주도한 것은 반도체, 유화, 기계 및 자동차
부문이었다) 정도의 문장이 뒤를 잇게 됩니다. 따라서 이
부분에서는 각 산업의 부문 즉, 반도체, 유화, 기계, 자동차와
더불어 조선(ship building) 철강 (steel), 섬유 (textile)과
같은 것들을 다시 한번 점검해 두시면 되겠습니다.
마지막으로 나타나는 부분은 향후에 대한 전망입니다. 한 가지
예문을 들어 보면
(예문) Exports will grow steadily in the coming months,
despite underlying concern over Asia's currency problems, it
said.
(해석) 수출은 아시아의 통화 위기에 대한 기본적인 우려에도
불구하고 향후 수 개월간 지속적으로 성장할 것으로 보인다.
여기서는 grow steadily, in the coming months를 비롯하여
upturn (하강하다가 상승), downturn (상승하다가 하강),
maintain current growth rate (현재 성장률 유지) 등과 같은
식의 상황이 있을 수 있습니다. 이와 같은 추세 변화에 대한
설명은 몇 차례 말씀 드린 바 있어 생략하도록 하겠습니다.
아무튼 다른 표현도 많겠지만 오늘 소개한 부분만이라도 확실하게
알아 두고 계시면 많은 도움이 될 수 있으리라고 생각합니다.
ECB는 당초 내년 상반기까지 현행 금리를 유지할 계획을 밝혔으나 최근 미·중 무역전쟁 등으로 인해 세계 경기가 둔화되면서 유럽 경제도 타격을 입자 금리 인하설이 나왔다.

Hong Kong-based Internet company China.com Corp., whose shares
skyrocketed this week after the United States reached a trade agreement
with China, said Friday its board approved a two-for-one stock split.

A special general meeting of shareholders is scheduled to vote Dec. 6 on
the split, which would be available to holders of record by the end of

Monday and hit a high of 137 during the week on news of the trade

World Trade Organization Director-General Mike Moore on Tuesday
accused opponents of the body who have set up fake WTO Web sites of
deliberately misleading people seeking information on its activities.

Dozens of such Web sites on the Internet have been created in the run-up
to the WTO's Ministerial Conference in Seattle from November 30 to
December 3 during which thousands of protesters are planning to
demonstrate.
