SAN FRANCISCO -- Next week, when the computer industry makes its
annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas for Comdex, the industry's biggest trade
show, much of the buzz will be on gadgets and software that are
alternatives to the standard personal computer.

It was hardly a new theme. Gates, who traditionally gives the trade
show's keynote address, has long promoted the idea that ever-smaller,
more convenient devices will help consumers take advantage of an
increasingly connected world, with Microsoft providing much of
the technology behind it all.

is a monopoly that has hurt consumers and stifled competition.
That finding, issued in the federal government's long-running
antitrust case against Microsoft, could make it harder for Microsoft
to provide the technology for the next wave of Internet devices,
which will be much leaner and lighter than personal computers.

hand-held computers and Internet-enabled cell phones will be a central
theme at Comdex, the world's largest computer industry trade show,
which runs through Friday.

The sun, it seems, never sets on the ZD Events empire. Virtually every
week, somewhere in the world, the company is setting up or tearing down
a computer trade show. Today, ZD Events produces 100 shows, including 22
Comdexes, in 25 countries, and this year it is adding a show in Greece
as well as in Israel. Next on its list of target markets are Sweden,
Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Turkey.

Comdex in Las Vegas is the undisputed top dog, the world's largest
computer trade show. ZD Events says it expects the event, which
attracted 4,000 computer enthusiasts and dealers in 1979, to draw
roughly 202,000 people this year. They will trek through a million
square feet of exhibition space in search of the next trend in computing
technology.

As the high technology industry enters the post-PC era in which the
Internet is king, it is hardly surprising that a decidedly PC-centric
trade show would face substantial change.
"Where people get their information is changing," said Alan Meckler, who
founded the popular series of Internet World shows before selling to
Penton Media Inc. last year. "The problem that Comdex has is that the PC
is finished as an innovator."

The Comdex brand has undergone transitions before.
In 1995, Interface Group, the company that founded the show, sold its
trade show division to Softbank, the Japanese conglomerate, for $800
million. Within a year, Softbank also bought a majority stake in
Ziff-Davis, eventually merging the two operations. Today, Softbank owns
70 percent of Ziff-Davis, which operates ZD Events as one of five units.

It was pretty the same story throughout Comdex, which with 200,000-plus
conference-goers is North America's largest and most prestigious trade
show. Attendees said there was talk about Microsoft's legal headache,
but the buzz around Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson's ruling was mostly
drowned out by the latest trends in technological development.

more than a week ago, giving people plenty of time to digest them. But

antitrust law and, if so, what remedies he should order.
