Nor is Chusok properly called an autumn moon festival, for the more important meaning to Koreans is to be found in the veneration of the family ancestors. Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.

Of all these factors the family is most important. Today the family is being challenged by individualism in which the individual has the precedence over the family; because of the individualism the family is in danger of disintegration.
(8) 지난 30년을 돌이켜 볼 때 서울의 외곽지대의 변화가 심한 것에 놀라지 않을 수가 없다.

(ANS) A leader today must have a thorough knowledge of his own job in every possible field and have vigilant supervisory power. His job is to make decisions and have others fulfill them, not to execute them himself. This is because he may probably become unable to command the whole work if he gets personally involved in any specific aspect of it.
(2) 오늘날 젊은이들은 연장자들과 자기들이 다르고 좀 뛰어나다고 생각하기 쉽다. 그러나 이것은 그들이 나이가 들면 알겠지만, 단지 젊은이들의 버릇이다.

8. '여행만큼 즐거운 것은 없다'라고 옛날부터 일러 왔지만 오늘날에도 이에 반대하는 사람은 거의 없다. 미지의 곳을 여행하여 그곳 사람들의 인정이나 풍습에 젖어 보는 것은 인생 최고의 즐거움 가운데 하나일 것이다.

To take a journey to strange places and become friendly with the people and familiar with their way of life may well bring us one of the greatest pleasures we can ever experience in our lives.
(ANS 2) "Nothing gives us more pleasure than traveling." as an old saying goes. Even these days few people are against it. Indeed, it is one of the highest joys we can get out of life to travel to strange places and get friendly and familiar with the people there and their customs and manners.
12. 오늘날은 라디오나 텔레비전에서 강의를 들을 수 있다. 그러나 만일 우리가 모르고 있는 것을 알려고 하지 않으면, 도대체 우리는 어떻게 될까?
→ 「우리가 모르고 있는 것을 알려고 하지 않으면」은 「알려고 하지 않을리가 없다」라는 것을 전제로 하여, 가정법으로 쓴다. If we stopped trying to know what we are ignorant of; if we ceased to try to understand what we don't know.

apt(자칫～하기 쉬운)와 likely(～함직한)는 to-부정사를 거느리는 경우 가까운 동의어가 된다.
likely는 어떤 모욕적인 말에 대해서 재치 있고 아주 날카로운 대답을 한 경우 다음처럼 말할 수 있다.
It was an apt answer; just the sort of thing that so-and-so would be likely to say.(경우에 꼭 맞는 대답이었다. 바로 아무개가 말함직한 대답이었다.)
He is apt to stammer when he is excited.(그는 흥분하면 말을 더듬기를 잘한다.)/ Cast iron is apt to break.(무쇠는 부러지기 쉽다.)
likely는 단순히 가능성을 나타내지만, 어떤 특수한 형편이나 환경에 쓰인다. 예를 들면, 11월 말경의 시카고의 날씨가 눈이 내릴 낌새를 보이는 경우, It is likely to snow today.라고 할 수 있다. 한편 apt는 Snow is apt to fall in Chicago in late November.처럼 일반적인 경향을 나타낸다.
또한 apt가 「잘하는, 재주가 있는」을 의미하는 경우에는 to-부정사를 거느리지 않고 at+동사의 -ing형을 취해서 He is apt at painting.처럼 쓰이기도 한다.
liable(자칫 ～하기 쉬운)은 부담이 될 일이거나 불리한 일을 당하기 쉬운 것을 나타낸다. liable과 apt는 뜻이 가깝기 때문에 서로 바뀌어 쓰이는 수가 있지만, liable은 주어에 대해서 부담 또는 불리함을 줄 가능성이 있는 경우에 사용되는 것이 원칙이다. We are liable to be overheard.(남이 우리의 말을 엿듣기 쉽다.)는 남이 엿듣는 것이 우리에게 불리한 것임을 표시한다.
He is apt to promise more than he can perform.에서 apt는 그의 습관적인 경향을 말하지만, 여기에 liable을 쓰면 그가 그렇게 하는 것을 부끄럽게 여기는 뜻이 포함된다. 마찬가지로 Some of the colors are liable to fade.는 퇴색하는 것이 빛깔에 손색이 되는 것을 나타낸다. 영국 현대 관용에서는 위에서 본 것처럼 liable을 사용하고 있지만 좋은 일과 언짢은 일에 두루 사용되었다. 이 용법은 현대 미국에 남아 있어 We are liable to be in Chicago next week.처럼 likely의 뜻으로 사용되고 있다. 그러나 liable은 「책임을 지는, 의무가 있는」이라는 법률적인 뜻〈Every citizen is liable for jury duty.(국민은 누구나 배심원으로 설 의무가 있다.)/ The surety is liable for the debt of his principal.(보증인은 본인의 부채를 갚을 의무가 있다.)〉에 국한해서 사용하는 것이 가장 무난하다고 말한다.
prone(～하기 쉬운)은 거의 피할 수 없는 성질이나 성벽을 암시하며 반드시 to-부정사를 취하지 않는다.

plan은 넓은 뜻으로는, 무슨 일을 하거나 무엇을 만들기 위해서 미리 짜놓은 자세한 방법을 가리키는 일반적인 말이다.
ex) make plans for a trip to Europe/ What are your plans for today?
좁은 뜻으로는, 그런 방법을 용기화·약도 따위로 그려내는 것을 암시한다.
ex) plan a garden
design은 plan의 최종적인 결과를 강조하고, 그 목적을 달성하는데 쓰이는 술책·때로는 간계를 암시한다.
ex) It was his design to separate us. (그는 우리를 이간시키려고 했다.)
project는 특히 야심적이고 광범위한 plan으로, 이것을 짜내는데 기업적 태도와 상상력을 구사하는 내용을 품고 있다. 건의된 또는 시험적인 계획을 말한다.
ex) He introduced a project for slum clearance.
scheme은 공상적이거나 도저히 실현할 수 없는 plan, 또는 이기적이거나 부정직한 plan을 말하며, 음흉스러운 술책을 암시한다.
ex) a scheme to embezzle the funds(자금을 횡령하려는 음모)

strange는 익숙하지 않은 것(unfamiliarity)을 언제나 암시하고, 생소한 것·자연스럽지 않은 것·모르는 것 따위에 적용된다.

peculiar는 종잡을 수 없는 것·독특한 성질을 가진 것을 가리킨다.
a peculiar smell/ Raising frogs is a peculiar way to make a living.
odd는 보통인 것 또는 관습적인 것에서 벗어난 것을 암시하고, 거의 기괴한(bizarre) 것에 가까운 것을 나타낸다.

queer는 odd의 뜻에 기괴(eccentricity)·예사롭지 않은 것(abnormality)·수상스러움(suspicion)의 뜻이 강조되어 첨가된 것을 말한다.

quaint는 기분 좋고, 흥미를 끄는 예스러운 데가 있는 odd한 것을 뜻한다.

heavy는 일상어이며 그 종류의 평균 밀도나 농도보다 높다든가, 부피 또는 양이 커서 상대적으로 무거운 것을 가리킨다.

또한 흔히 슬픔·근심·피로 따위가 몸과 마음을 무겁게 누르는 것을 암시하며, ‘슬픈’(sorrowful)의 뜻으로도 자주 쓰인다.

때로는 단지 경쾌하거나 생기 등이 없는 것을 가리키기도 한다.
Compared with her, other women were heavy and dull.
ponderous는 크기나 부피 때문에 지나치게 무거워서 빨리 움직이거나 옮길 수 없는 것에 적용된다.
