Everybody would like to make a trip to some distant stars in the space as well as into the future and past.
But we know that we could not make such a trip by means of an ordinary vehicle.
It would take thousands of years to reach the nearest star ever at the speed of millions of immensity of the space by all means.
That is to say, we must dash through the space by means of some mysterious method of transportation.
But, to achieve this exploit we should know much more than we do now about space and time.
Do we really know what space is? Probably the answer is "No". It is fortunate, however, that we can now control the space.

T : Have you all completed the homework I assigned last class?
S : Mr. Kim, I didn't bring my homework. I really worked on it until late last night.
So, I ended up waking up late this morning and was in a huge hurry to get to school.
T : Are you saying you forgot your homework? Put your homework on my desk upon arriving tomorrow morning.
S : Thank you so much.

Africa is the second largest continent in the world.
Yet much of Africa has not been developed by man into farms and cities.
One of the reasons is that a dangerous and unpleasant insect is found there.
This insect makes its home in the heart of Africa.

Starting up a store requires as much as $200,000.
Raising that kind of money is difficult for someone without a business record because the flow of venture capital has dried up.
In 1996, the amount of venture capital fell 53% from the previous year, to $202 million.
This year the numbers are expected to show a steeper decline.

What should be done with the garbage?
There is no more room for garbage.
It is not possible to burn garbage, because that pollutes the air.
So the governments are looking for ways to reduce the amount of garbage that is produced.
One way to do this is to recycle as much as possible.
Not all kinds of garbage can be recycled, of course.
The easiest things to recycle are probably glass and paper.

The job of reporting car crashes or other emergencies is usually given to new journalists after they finish college.
However, because most people do not have much experience of seeing terrible accidents,
these young reporters may have a strong emotional reaction to what they see.
This emotional reaction goes against what journalists are taught in school.
They are taught to report the news objectively.

When I first opened “Body Shop” in 1976
my only object was to earn enough to feed my children.
Today “Body Shop” is a company rapidly growing all around the world.
In the years since I began I have learned a lot.
Much of what I have learned will be found in this book.
It says about how to run a successful business.
It's not a normal business book, nor is it just about my life.
The message is that to succeed in business you have to be different.
In business, as in life, you need to enjoy yourself,
to have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the unexpected things.

Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them.
Sharks do not have ears.
However, they hear sounds and movements in the water.
Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate.
Sharks can feel these vibrations, and they help the sharks find food.
Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons.
For example, cancer is very common in many animals, including people.
However, it is rare in sharks.
Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer.
Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer, too.

This “impact theory” explains many facts about the earth and the moon.
For example, the moon is very dry because the impact created so much heat that it dried up all the water.
The earth has iron in its center.
However, the moon has very little iron in its center.
This is because the moon formed from lighter materials that make up the outer part of the Earth.

Some history researchers suggest Marco Polo never actually visited China.
Why do they say that?
First, they ask why he didn't write about the Great Wall.
It's hard to miss!
Then, they point out he also failed to mention Chinese tea-drinking ceremonies, a very important part of life there.
Moreover, no Chinese sources of the period mention Marco Polo, although they mention other foreigners.
Finally, some say he never traveled much farther than Turkey.
Travelers who tried to follow his route always became lost at this point.
Perhaps he copied details from guidebooks on China.

As we drove home, Dad did not say a word.
With both hands on the wheel, he stared at the dirt road.
My older brother, Robert, was also silent.
He leaned his head back and closed his eyes.
When I opened the front door to the hut, I stopped.
Everything we owned was packed in cardboard boxes.
I sat down on a box.
The thought of having to move to an unfamiliar city brought tears to my eyes.
That night I could not sleep, thinking about how much I hated this move.

Imagine you were asked to work overtime and you didn't want to do it.
Then you were told you would get paid twice as much money.
You would probably become more cooperative.
This idea also works with children.
A few years ago, a child of mine wouldn't brush her teeth before going to bed.
Nothing we did could make her change her mind.
Then, my parenting class teacher recommended that I should give her rewards.
So I used this simple phrase, which worked wonders:
“If you go and brush your teeth now, we will have time to read three stories instead of just one.”
Whenever she heard it, she would jump up and brush her teeth right away.

When something doesn't meet our expectations, many of us operate on the assumption,
“When in doubt, it must be someone else's fault.”
You can see this assumption in action almost everywhere you look―the car isn't working properly,
so the mechanic must have repaired it incorrectly;
your expenses exceed your income, so your husband or wife must be spending too much money.
However, blaming others takes an enormous amount of mental energy.
It makes you feel powerless over your own life, because your happiness depends on the behavior of others, which you can't control.

According to a recent scientific study, geese fly in a “V” formation to conserve energy.
This is the same principle that bicyclists use in the Tour De France.
It's called “drafting”―the geese use the air currents created by the birds in front of them to fly more efficiently.
The aerodynamic “V” shape reduces the air resistance, which lets the geese fly much farther.
And since the bird at the front of the “V” encounters the most wind resistance, they all take turns at that position.

Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you're already doing.
It's growing and developing.
It's accepting bigger and greater challenges.
It's not being afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or failing.
It's trying to do your very best.
And if, in the end, your very best wasn't quite good enough, you just have to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time.
Nobody succeeds 100 percent in anything they do.
When you're able to recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure and losing are as much a part of the game of life as are success and winning.

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.
* probe 탐사선

Eagles, soaring high and fearless, have always made people think of strength, freedom, and courage.
For this reason, countries, empires, and rulers from ancient Egypt up to the modern United States have made eagles their symbol.
Most Americans have seen enough pictures and emblems to recognize an eagle.
Surprisingly, few know much about the bird.
Even people who study birds, do not know a great deal.
It is difficult to study the eagle's habits because it is dangerous and fierce.
Also, it nests high up in trees or on cliffs which are difficult to reach.

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become.
With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates.
According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban.
These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban,
while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon.
In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center.
However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”

You probably can recognize this situation
because it is just one of many examples where men and women quarrel.
This problem is not just Tom and Mary’s but is present in almost every relationship.
Solving this problem for Tom and Mary depends not on how much they loved each other
but on how much they understood the opposite sex.
Without knowing that women really do need to talk about problems to feel better,
Tom would continue to think Mary talked too much and resist listening to her.
Without knowing that Tom was reading the news to feel better, Mary would feel ignored and neglected.
She would persist in trying to get him to talk when he didn’t want to.
These two differences can be resolved by first understanding in greater detail how men and women cope with stress.

The rate for heart disease among men in China is one-sixteenth the rate in the U.S.
The rate for colon cancer is only about two-fifths of the U.S. rate.
Scientists believe that the poor diet of North American is killing them.
The average citizen consumes too much meat, sugar and salt and not enough vegetables, grains, and fiber.
And these unhealthy eating habits are prime suspects in several serious diseases: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers.
Some call these diseases “diseases of wealth.”
As countries become richer, people begin to eat more meat.
Heart disease and certain kinds of cancer increase.
This is happening in Japan and in the wealthier parts of China.

The combine relieved farmers of much of the burden of harvest.
It enabled farmers to rescue crops which otherwise might have been lost.
The combine was first developed for use in countries where the climate was suitable for grain production.
It was said that the climate in such countries as the British Isles was totally unsuitable for its use.
However, this was not true.
Combines work in quite damp conditions.
The use of a combine resulted in a big reduction in the time and labor required to harvest a given crop
because only one or, at the most, two men were needed to operate the machine.
Other labor required to transport the grain to storage was not excessive.

I went to a large university well-known for its basketball team.
Most of the time when I’m asked where I went to school, people recite its basketball statistics rather than its academic excellence.
It is seldom that I hear someone say, “Oh, your university has an excellent library!”
Universities waste far too much money and attention on sports activities, often doing harm to academic programs.
In my opinion, however, only a small portion of students are on athletic teams, yet the majority of students use the university library.
Universities need to give more money to the library than to sports activities.
This would greatly benefit the university libraries with new books and new computer equipment.

Sometimes when I'm flying from one speaking engagement to another, I find myself sitting next to someone who's quite talkative.
This is often a pleasing experience for me because I enjoy meeting people.
I learn so much by watching and listening to the people I meet and see every day.
I've heard stories of sadness and delight which would be better than those on well-known TV programs.

My biology teacher, Mr. Joseph, has a jar.
Not just any jar, mind you, but a jar of immense importance.
In 1996, Mr. Joseph filled the jar with pond water.
He put the cap on, and hasn't opened it since.
In this pond water tiny organisms thrive.
That jar is much like the Earth, Mr. Joseph says.
The living things of the Earth are independent of the rest of the universe and they don't care what's going on around them.

Here are more ways to cut calories.
Eat a good breakfast.
By matching calorie consumption with your most active hours, you will burn calories more efficiently.
Fuel up early in the day with a low-fat-meal(cereal with skim milk and fruit, for example).
Avoid late-night eating.
Metabolic needs are lowest at night.
So calories consumed then tend to be stored as fat.
I know a man who needed to lose weight.
He didn't eat much during the day, but by evening he was greedy for pizza and ice cream.
This makes him put on 10 kilograms.

Indeed, the latest research shows that laughter may have numerous benefits.
Laughter provides excellent exercise, may strengthen the immune system, muffle pain, lighten stress and improve circulation and breathing.
In theory, laughter could even prevent heart attacks and combat cancer.
You would never think that, in laughing, you are actually perpetuating an act of health.
Just think about the last time you laughed really hard ― a real fall-on-floor special. Remember?
Oh, you were some spectacle.
Your mouth twisted open.
With so much blood engorging the veins of your head and neck, your face turned red.
You doubled over, gasping, wheezing like some haywire accordion symphony.
Your stomach, chest and ribs ached.
Rendered speechless, you dribbled your vodka-and-tonic without shame.
Sounds like fun, yes?
A real life-extender, no?
Well, believe it or not, this mirth experience ― this volcanic physical event, this seizure, really ― was quite good for you.

Shortly after Daughter No. 2 returned from her honeymoon, she asked for the same amount of money we had spent on her sister's education.
My husband told her he would have sent her to college had she chosen to go, but we could not give her that much money.
I've felt bad about this for a long time because I'm afraid she feels we favored her older sister.

When the mothers in this country wake up to how much cold, hard cash they are throwing into landfills (not to mention how this is fouling the environ- ment), they will surely do as their mothers did, and that is use cloth diapers.

My question is how do I deal with this brother, plus a mother who sides with him and tells me I should forget about the money because too much time has passed?

Wherein lies the value of educating aesthetic taste?
The most straightforward answer is seemingly obvious.
There is much pleasure to be derived from appreciation of fine art works, and so providing students the means to appreciate them will make their lives more enjoyable later on.
But this answer itself raises two further questions.
First, does a person's overall aesthetically derived pleasure typically increase when that person is trained to appreciate the 'higher' as opposed to 'lower' art forms?
Second, does appreciation of the 'higher' forms really depend on a person's being educated to appreciate them?
Clearly a third question is implicit here as well, namely: in what sense are the 'higher' forms higher?
The issue of requiring or even encouraging aesthetic education is tied also to the question of whether certain sorts of taste in art are objectively better than others.

The global information market will be huge and will combine all the various ways human goods, services, and ideas are exchanged.
On a practical level, this will give you broader choices about most things, including how you earn and invest, what you buy and how much you pay for it, who your friends are and how you spend your time with them, and where and how securely you and your family live.
Your workplace and your idea of what it means to be "educated" will be transformed, perhaps almost beyond recognition.
Your sense of identity, of who you are and where you belong, may open up considerably.
In short, just about everything will be done differently.
I can hardly wait for this tomorrow, and I'm doing what I can to help make it happen.
