[比較] top, summit, peak, climax, acme, apex, pinnacle, zenith
top은 가장 많이 쓰이는 일상어이다.
the top of the house/ Please loosen the top of this jar.(이 병마개 좀 늦추어 다오.)
비유적 용법으로 ‘가장 높은 자리, 수석’을 뜻하기도 한다.
He is at the top of his class.
summit은 어원(summus, highest)이 보여주듯이, 언덕, 산, 고개 따위의 제일 높은 곳을 가리킨다.
Two members of the expedition reached the summit of Mt. Everest.
비유적으로 쓰일 때는 노력해서 도달할 수 있는 최고 수준, ‘절정, 극치’를 뜻한다.

peak는 산맥에서와 같이 여러 높은 지점 중에서 제일 높은 지점과 평면(level)이라기 보다는 점(point)을 암시한다. 산의 뾰족한 꼭대기, 정상이 뾰족한 산을 뜻한다.

pinnacle은 비유적 용법에서 summit, peak와 같지만, 어지럽고 안정성이 없는 높이를 암시한다.

[比較] use, employ, utilize, exploit, work
use는 일반적인 말로 한 사물을 자기의 목적을 달성하기 위한 수단이나 도움으로 삼는 것을 말한다.

사람에 관해서 쓰이는 경우에는 사람을 수동적인 물건으로 보는 데서 흔히 치욕적인 의미를 갖고 있고 이기적이고 흉한 뜻을 암시한다.
He's only using you./ He used his brother to advance himself.
따라서 I could use your help this afternoon.이라고 하는 것이 I could use you this afternoon.이라고 하는 것보다 재치 있는 표현이지만, 친한 사이에는 후자는 전자를 단축한 것으로 인정될 수 있다. 또 흔히 ‘소비하다’의 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

또한 used는 미국 상업 용어에서 secondhand(헌), worn(낡은)에 대한 완곡어로 쓰인다.

employ는 use보다는 약간 품위가 있는 말로, 놀고 있는 것과 쓰이지 않는 것을 말하고, 사람에 관해서 쓰이는 경우에는 일과 급료를 주는 것을 가리킨다.

use와 employ는 흔히 바뀌어 쓰일 수 있지만 뜻에 약간의 차이가 있다. 연장과 수단의 뜻이 강할 때에는 use가 즐겨 쓰이고, 종사·선택·이용 따위의 뜻이 강할 때에는 employ가 즐겨 쓰인다.
A writer uses words effectively who knows what ones he should employ in a given context.
utilize는 실용적으로 또는 이익이 되게 사용하는 것을 말하고, 엄밀한 뜻에서는 더 좋은 것이 없는 경우에 무엇을 실용적으로 또는 유익하게 쓰는 것을 가리킨다.
Well, you'll just have to utilize what's there.
exploit는 ‘이용하다, 착취하다’의 뜻으로 실용적으로 이용하는 것을 의미한다.
He exploited the concession to the last penny.(그는 이권을 모두 이용해 먹었다.)
특히 사람에 대해서 쓰이는 경우에는 언제나 자기 목적을 위해서 이기적으로 이용하는 것을 의미한다.
They have exploited that child mercilessly.
work는 타동사로 엄밀한 뜻은 ‘(물건에) 노력을 들이다’(expend labor upon)이다.
He worked the soil.(그는 땅을 갈았다.)/ If the clay is worked in the hands it will soon become soft and malleable.
확대된 용법에서는 흔히 욕하는 의미로서의 exploit, utilize에 대한 동의어로 쓰인다.

우리는 스포츠 경기로 이루어진 가장 큰 행사인 경기를 올림픽 게임이라 부릅니다.
그렇다면 Game과 Sport를 특별히 구분해서 사용하는 이유가 있을까요?
일반적으로 Sport라고 할 때는 육체적 능력을 기반으로 고도의 숙련된 기술을 요하는
활동을 말합니다. Sport는 전통적의미로는 아래의 보기와 같이 공을 이용한 실외운동을
말합니다. 물론 지금은 그 밖의 운동도 지칭하게 되었지만요.
