Author Joseph Conrad wrote, “In work is the chance to find yourself.”
If you think of work as punishment you'll never achieve your goal.
Working hard does have its weaknesses, its difficult and painful moments.
There'll be times when you'll want to give up the whole thing.
But for every weakness, there's benefit.
Hard work is the way to the end of the rainbow.

Eagles, soaring high and fearless, have always made people think of strength, freedom, and courage.
For this reason, countries, empires, and rulers from ancient Egypt up to the modern United States have made eagles their symbol.
Most Americans have seen enough pictures and emblems to recognize an eagle.
Surprisingly, few know much about the bird.
Even people who study birds, do not know a great deal.
It is difficult to study the eagle's habits because it is dangerous and fierce.
Also, it nests high up in trees or on cliffs which are difficult to reach.

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you, but I think it is your garbage can that has been spilled in my driveway for the past week.
Anyway, it looks like the can that has been sitting next to your porch,
and it had your name painted on it, but I could still be mistaken.
Maybe we could decide whose it is, but I don't think it is mine.
I could help you clear up the mess, or ask the trashman about it.
It probably isn't either of our faults.

If you think clowning is just putting up makeup and acting like an idiot, you are wrong.
Anybody can be an idiot, but it takes many hours of practice to make your idiocy funny.
Aha! There's the trick.
I have had thirteen years of being a funny idiot, so it came to me naturally.
But making jokes is really hard.
I have to write down ideas when they pop into my head, or else I don't remember them.
Another trick of being a clown is not to scare kids.
It is tough.
Now whenever I go to see kids, I take off the dark stuff and just wear my bright undershirt,
making kids relaxed and willing to enjoy my show.

For instance, as a woman, I would be surprised if a man gave up seat for me.
I might even prefer that he didn't offer such a thing
because such displays of courtesy have the potential to seem artificial, burdensome or even sexist.
Instead, we Americans believe in the rationality of "Finders, keepers."
This means that we think in this way:
“No, no, you were sitting there first, it makes the most sense that you continue to sit there.”

"So you think all illness can ultimately be prevented or cured?"
"Yes, I'm sure we will have longer or shorter life spans; that's probably up to the Creator, but we don't have to be sick, and we don't have to be the victim of so many accidents."

A few years ago, when I was back in Kansas, I gave a talk at my old college.
It was open to the public, and afterward a very old man came up to me and asked me if my maiden name had been Wemyss.
I said yes, thinking he might have known my father or my grandfather. But no.
"When I was young," he said, "I once worked for your great-grandfather, Robert Wemyss, when he had the sheep ranch here."
I think that was a moment when I realized all over again something of great importance to me.
My long-ago families came from Scotland.
My true roots were there.

"The minute you climb in, you start feeling excited.
There's nothing so exciting for me, not even a jet plane.
You get in and start up and off you go.
And then you've got to pay attention every minute.
There's always someone doing something crazy who's likely to end up under your wheels.
I sometimes think it's a miracle if I can get all the way there with no accidents.
You've always got to be thinking ahead.
There's a lot of people in this job who have stomach problems from the tension.
They lose their hearing too, because of the noise.
You've got to be tough on this job, you know."

I've tried everything I can think of to make him get up.
I've set my own alarm clock and gotten up with him, I've duck-taped the "on/off" switch on his clock so he must use the snooze button instead, and even tried letting him suffer the consequences of getting up late.
That hasn't worked either.

There are, on the other hand, many good reasons against owning a car.
First, it can be very expensive.
The price of fuel continues to rise and car insurance can cost three or four hundred dollars a year.
In addition, it is expensive to maintain and repair a car.
A simple tune-up can cost $50.
In an urban area, it might also be expensive to park the car.
Second, owning a car can cause worry and stress.
It is exhausting to drive in rush-hour traffic, or to drive around and around looking for a parking space.
If you leave your car on the street, it might get stolen.
That is something else to worry about.
Finally, everyone needs to think about pollution and energy problems.
Air pollution and noise pollution increase as more and more people drive cars.

Love lifts you up.
It makes you look up.
It makes you think up.
It makes you a better person than you were before.

In other words, by expecting these things to deliver lasting delight, we are setting ourselves up for a fall.
We think, "As soon as I get that new job I'll be happy," then we get the job, our joy is fleeting, we start to feel unfulfilled again, and suddenly we are miserable.
All of our expectations have been dashed.
Maybe we need a new job? And the cycle continues.

Never both be angry at once.
Never yell at each other unless the house is on fire.
Yield to the wishes of the other as an exercise in self-discipline if you can't think of a better reason.
If you have a choice between making yourself or your mate look good, choose your mate.
If you feel you must criticize, do so lovingly.
Never bring up a mistake of the past.
Neglect the whole world rather than each other.
Never let the day end without saying at least one complimentary thing to your life partner.
Never meet without an affectionate greeting.
When you've made a mistake, talk it out and ask for forgiveness.
Remember, it takes two to make an argument.
The one who is wrong is the one who will be doing most of the talking.
Never go to bed mad.

What do you think you're doing, telling me to shut up?

If you see a pelican standing with its flat feet on a sandy beach, you may not
think that he is much of a flier. But he is. Watch him as he moves along at about
twenty-six miles an hour, almost touching the tops of the waves. Often he flies with
his companions in a long line of pelicans. They follow one another up, over and
down the waves, move their wings together and stay the same distance form one
another. This is a perfect group flying show.

Nor do I deny that money, up to a certain point, is very capable of
increasing happiness; beyond that point, I do not think it does so.

But what about men? "Jazzercise is a blowout," one Atlanta woman says.
"Remember the first dances you went to, where all the girls ended up dancing with
other girls because the boys couldn't dance? So this gives me a chance to dance,
which my husband hasn't done since our wedding. But my husband still won't
dance. Come to think of it, I'm back to dancing with the girls. Haven't made much
progress in the past 25 years, have I?"

A Methodist, an Episcopalian and a Catholic were in a boat 25 yards from
shore. The Methodist stepped out and calmly walked to land.
The Episcopalian duplicated the exit on the water. Then the Catholic
stepped out and sank. Coming up, he got back in the boat, walked out
and went under again.
One dry friend on shore said to the other, "Do you think we should tell
him where the rocks are?"

*say to oneself 생각하다 think:
I woke up early and said to myself, "Shall I get up?"

All the evil in this world is brought about by persons who are always up
and doing, but do not know when they ought to be up nor what they ought
to be doing. The devil, I take it, is the busiest creature in the universe,
and I can imagine him denouncing laziness. In his kingdom, I will wager,
nobody is allowed to do nothing. The world, we all freely admit, is in a
muddle, but I do not think that it is laziness that has brought it to such
a pass.

*cover up 봉쇄하다 prevent from being noticed or becoming publicly know:
The newspapers printed the story before the government could cover it up.

I think what has chiefly struck me in human beings is their lack of
consistency. I have never seen people all of a piece. It has amazed me
that the most incongruous traits should exist in the same person and
for all that yield a plausible harmony. I have known crooks who were
capable of self-sacrifice, sneak thieves who were sweet-natured, and
harlots for whom it was a point of honor to give good value for money.

The root of the trouble springs from too much emphasis upon competitive
success as the main source of happiness. I do not deny that the feeling
of success makes it easier to enjoy life.
A painter, let us say, who has been obscure throughout his youth, is
likely to become happier if his talent wins recognition. Nor do I deny
that money, up to a certain point, is very capable of increasing
happiness; beyond that point, I do not think it does so. What I do
maintain is that success can only be one ingredient in happiness, and
is too dearly purchased if all the other ingredients have been
sacrificed to obtain it.

A donkey was one day walking along a pond. He slipped and fell into the
pond. It was only a shallow pond, but as he had a heavy load on his back,
he could not stand up. "Help!" cried the donkey in a pitiful voice.
The frogs all around came to him and said coldly. "What a fool you are
to make such a fuss! Just think of us. We are always living here."

Everybody in the world is seeking happiness―and there is one sure way
to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't
depend on outer conditions. It depends on inner conditions.
It isn't what you have or what you are or where you are or what you are
doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
For example, two people may be in the same place, doing the same thing;
both may have about an equal amount of money and prestige―and yet one
may be miserable and the other happy. Why? Because of a different mental
attitude. I saw just as many happy faces among the Chinese coolies
sweating and toiling in the devastating heat of China for seven cents
a day as I see on Park Avenue.
"Nothing is good or bad," said Shakespeare, "but thinking makes it so."
Abe Lincoln once remarked, "Most folks are about as happy as they make
up their minds to be."

A:I'm sorry I don't know the phone number.
B:That's all right. I think I'll have to look it up in the telephone
directory.
A:Thank you for the quarter. I'll return it as soon as I get the change.
는 Do you have change?
전화번호를 알아보라고 할때는 look it up을 look up the number 혹은 find
the number나 consult the number로 말할 수 있다.
격식을 갖추어 「~에 대하여 고맙다」는 Thank you for~.
Thanks for~. 라고 말한다. return it을 pay it back으로 말할 수 있다.

A:Would you introduce the beautiful girl to me?
B:Haven't you met her somewhere before?
A:No. I don t think so.
B:That s Jane, a friend of mine. Let s walk up to her.
Haven't you met her
before? Didn't you meet her before?
본적이 있으면, Yes, I have로, 본적이 없으면 No, I haven t로 대답한다. my
중의 한명일때는 one of my friend, 혹은 a friend of mine을 쓴다. walk up

A:I give up! I simply can't learn french.
B:Why do you say that? I think you are making a lot of progress.
A:No, I'm not. I try and try and I still can't speak it very well.
**
give up은 stop trying 또는 abandon의 뜻이다. I gave
up the test 혹은 I gave up taking the test로 말한다. try and try~는 I try
and
much progress로 쓰면 된다.
경우에는 make a lot of progress를 쓰면 된다.

Hurry up! It is later than you think.

It is so easy to be reactive! You get caught up in the moment. You say
things you don't mean. You do things you regret later. And you think,
"Oh, if only I had stopped to think about it, I would never have reacted
that way!" Clearly, our lives would be better if we acted based on our
deepest values instead of reacting to the feelings of the moment. What we
all need is a 'pause button' - something that enables us to stop between
what happens to us and our response to it.

A few years ago, when I was back in Kansas, I gave a talk at my old

Some people feel that reading "for pleasure" (anything not directly
connected to a job or immediately practical) is a waste of time. Spending
hours with a book, they think, is unproductive dreaming. For example,
when asked about their reading, some businessmen often reply, "I keep up
with the professional literature, but I don't have time for books." Their
tone implies that anyone with time to read book is somehow an idler.

-

One summer night
Chelsia Chan & Kenny
One summer night
The stars were shining bright
One summer dream made with fancy whims
That summer night
My whole world tumbled down
I would have died if not for you
-
Set me free
Like the sparrows up the tree
Give a sign
So I would ease my mind
Just say a word
And I'll come running wild
Give me a chance to live again
-
Chorus:
Each night I'd pray fot you
My heart would cry for you
The sun won't shine again
Since you have gone
Each time I'd think of you
My heart would beat for you
You are the one the for me

-

>>> Kissing A Fool <<< by George Michael

You are far
When I could have been your star
You listened to people
Who scared you to death
And from my heart
-
Strange that you were strong enough
To even make a start
But you'll never find peace of mind
Till you listen to your heart
***
People
You can never change the way they feel
Better let them do just what they will
For they will
If you let them steal your heart from you
-
People
Will always make a lover feel a fool
But you knew I loved you
We could have showm them all
We should have seen love through
-
Fooled me with the tears in your eyes
Covered me with kisses and lies
So bye
But please don't take my heart
-
You are far
I'm never gonna be your star
I'll pick up the pieces
And mend my heart
Maybe I'll be strong enough
I don't know where to start
But I'll never find peace of mind
While I listen to my heart
*** repeat
People
Will always make a lover feel a fool
But you knew I loved you
We could have shown them all
-
But remember this
Every other kiss
That you ever give as long as we both live
When you need the hand of another man
One you really can surrender with
I will wait for you like I always do
There's something there
That can't compare with any other
** repeat
Strange that I was wrong enough
To think you'd love me too
I guess you were kissing a fool
You must have been kissing a fool
