^^Though the student activists adopt national unification as their slogan,
there are very few in South Korea who think that confusion and
violence will help bring that long-cherished goal closer. Very few
also accept at face value the image that radical students, who praise
the North Korean ruling system, attempt to present of being genuine
forces desiring reunification. Most, at the same time, question the
students' categorization of the South Korean government and police as
elements which oppose unification.

Life is determined by a series of choices, each one building on the one before.
The significance of each individual choice may not seem that great.
When added together, however, all the choices put you where you are.
Most people agonize over the big choices and don't even think about the little ones,
though the little choices are what make the big ones possible.
Little choices such as what to eat and how much exercise to do will eventually determine how long you live.

My friends, I've known Mr. Jackson for years, and I think he is a fine man.
But he is too inexperienced to be mayor of our city.

Author Joseph Conrad wrote, “In work is the chance to find yourself.”
If you think of work as punishment you'll never achieve your goal.
Working hard does have its weaknesses, its difficult and painful moments.
There'll be times when you'll want to give up the whole thing.
But for every weakness, there's benefit.
Hard work is the way to the end of the rainbow.

A type of artificial sand might be able to slow down beach from washing off.
Strangely, this new kind of sand is made by grinding glass.
You might think that walking barefoot on ground glass would be painful.
But it's not.
The reason is very simple.
Sand and glass are made of the same kind of material, called silicate.
When glass is ground very finely, you get a sandlike substance that is harder than real sand.
The size of the pieces can be controlled.
Larger pieces wouldn't be as easily affected by the wind and waves.
So a beach covered with artificial sand would last longer than a beach with real sand.

Today most scientists believe that the moon formed from the earth.
They think that a large object hit the earth early in its history.
Perhaps the object was as big as Mars.
When the object hit the earth, huge pieces of the earth broke off.
These pieces went into orbit around the earth.
After a brief time, the pieces came together and formed the moon.

We are trained to control bad feelings such as anger or sorrow in public and to think before we act on them.
That doesn't necessarily mean we should make this kind of control a habit in our personal lives.
My advice? Unexpressed feelings are harmful.
If you're not alone, simply postpone them for a few moments.
Then go somewhere private and do whatever the feeling seems to want you to do.
Cry, tremble, or shake your fists.
In short, expressing feelings is good for your mental health.

Almost everyone will tell you to write about the things you know best.
And you may know more than you realize.
You are the expert on at least one very interesting subject―yourself!
Remember that just as you enjoy reading stories about others, your readers will enjoy reading stories about your feelings and about things that happened to you.
As you think about writing topics, don't forget your hobbies and talents.
As an expert, you can give your readers the real facts.
Maybe some of your readers will be inspired to try a new hobby themselves.

The real danger starts when utterly unnecessary things become bargains.
There are a huge number of people who just cannot resist bargains and sales.
So long as they think they are getting a bargain, they will buy clothes they will never wear, furniture they have no space for.
Old ladies will buy inline skates and non-smokers will buy pipe-cleaners.
And I once heard of a man who bought an electric circular saw as a bargain and cut off two of his fingers the next day.
But he had no regrets: the saw had been truly cheap.

Many people might think that they choose friends on the basis of personal characteristics such as intelligence, personality, interest, or even physical appearance.
But a study of a housing complex for married students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests that physical distance can be a decisive factor.
Researchers asked couples to list their friends in the complex.
They found that residents were far more likely to list the couple in the next apartment than the one that lived two doors away.
A distance of thirty feet made the difference between friends and strangers!

Students in harambee schools are aware that they are not getting as good an education as those who attend more expensive schools.
Only two harambee students in 1,000 will attend a university.
Why then do so many students continue to flock to harambee schools?
They point out that if they did not go, they would have no chance at all of going to college.
They enthusiastically tell visitors, “Yes, the chances are slim, but I think that I can succeed.”

It takes time and effort to change the way you think and act.
Consider the way you brush your teeth.
This is a simple habit pattern.
But a considerable amount of effort is required to change it.
Before beginning to brush, you would have to remind yourself about the new method you plan to use.
While brushing, your mind would wander and you would catch yourself returning to your old method.
After a second reminder you would start using the new method only to forget and have to catch yourself again.
And so it would go until enough time and energy had been spent to make the new method as automatic as the old method was.

Frequent repetition of positive experiences can change your self-concept in a dramatic and positive manner.
One major difference between people with a low level of self-respect and those with a high level is the type of memories they choose to recall.
People with a low level usually think over negative experiences
while people with a high level spend their time recalling and enjoying positive memories.
Set aside five to ten minutes a day to recall positive things and success you have achieved.
As you recall each positive experience, compliment yourself on your success.
Continue with this exercise until it is easy to recall success and you feel good about your self-compliments.

Such effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies.
Babies who are more physically active show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active.
With babies, even a little movement can show big results.
Pediatricians believe in the importance of exercise.
They think that many learning disabilities that children have in school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies.

It's not all bad news for men, though.
In a related study, the team found that the hearts of veteran male athletes were as powerful as those of inactive 20-year-old male undergraduates.
But can men really recover lost heart function after a lifetime of inactivity and poor diet? Is it ever too late to start exercising?
“I think the answer is no,” says a doctor.
“The health benefits to be gained from sensible exercise are to be recommended, regardless of age.”
So if you are male and getting older, get on with it.

Children's play has been defined as the aimless expenditure of excessive energy.
Many people do not realize, however, that play can foster development in a number of areas.
For example, playing kickball not only helps physical development by promoting gross motor skills, it also cultivates social interaction among peers.
To discuss and agree to the rules of the game, children must use language for communication.
Having fun and playing as a group promotes self-esteem and teaches skills such, teamwork, cooperation, and leadership.
So the next time you see children play, do not think of it as a meaningless activity, think of it as a process of learning.

For instance, as a woman, I would be surprised if a man gave up seat for me.
I might even prefer that he didn't offer such a thing
because such displays of courtesy have the potential to seem artificial, burdensome or even sexist.
Instead, we Americans believe in the rationality of "Finders, keepers."
This means that we think in this way:
“No, no, you were sitting there first, it makes the most sense that you continue to sit there.”

Medicine is changing, and changing rapidly.
We don't think of the body as a machine anymore, with parts that eventually wear out and have to be fixed or replaced.
We're beginning to understand that the health of the body is determined to a great degree by our mental processes: what we think of life and especially of ourselves, at both the conscious and the unconscious levels.

Reading a book is a kind of conversation.
You may think that it is not, because the author does all of the talking, and you have nothing to say; but if you think that, you do not realize your duty as a reader―and you are not using your opportunities.
Actually, the reader is the one who has the last word.
The author has said what he wanted to say, and then it is the reader's turn.
The conversation, however, should be an orderly one, with first one talking and then the other.

Teacher: I see your point.
But, well, I'm afraid that may be too extreme an approach.
Don't you think so, Tom?
Tom,
Tom: Well...
Tom:
I think it's possible.
As a matter of fact, I bike to school everyday.
That's why I think I stay in shape.

If we behave in a way that lets others know we are sure of ourselves and that we have a strong sense of personal worth, violence will disappear, except as a last resort to protect ourselves from those who have not yet gotten the message.
Unfortunately, explanations do not change behavior.
We can, however, change ourselves, and this will change the way people think about us.
If you continue to do what you always did, you will get what you always got.
You cannot change the world but you CAN change yourself.
When you behave differently, people will look at you with different eyes.

Many people think of crisis as being connected only with unhappy events.
"This is not the case," argued John.

I want to thank the smokers of the world for their consideration.
Since smoking has been banned in many public areas there has been a remarkable change in attitude.
Rather than anger at being pushed outside on cold, rainy days, I have witnessed polite cooperation.
Even in areas where smoking is not specifically prohibited I have seen smokers excuse themselves from groups to go outside.
Most important, I have seen smokers excuse themselves when small children are present.
As a former smoker, I think these considerate folks deserve special thanks for their remarkable change in behavior.

Dogs, like humans, need fresh water, fresh food and something to think about.
A dog left alone in the backyard will often bark nonstop for hours.
He is trying to get his message across.
Yes, your neighbors can hear it.
And no, they don't like it.
Do you want your neighbors lying awake all night thinking of creative ways to kill you and/or your dog?
If you are not willing to invest the time and energy to train your dog so it can be part of your family, please don't get one.
There is nothing so heartwarming as the love and loyalty of a dog, but it is better for the animal to be destroyed than to be left alone, neglected, bewildered and confused, brimming with love but with no one to accept it.

I often wonder if these same people yell at their doctors.
I'm willing to bet that they don't.
People tend to think of doctors as God-like creatures endowed with supernatural powers, while pharmacists are simply people who work in a drugstore.

A parent decreed one Christmas that she was no longer going to remind her children of their thank-you-note duties.
As a result, their grandmother never received acknowledgments of the generous checks she had given.
The next year things were different, however.
"The children came over in person to thank me," the grandparent told a friend triumphantly.
"How wonderful!" the friend exclaimed.
"What do you think caused the change in behavior?"
"Oh, that's easy," the grandmother replied.
"This year I didn't sign the checks."

There are, on the other hand, many good reasons against owning a car.
First, it can be very expensive.
The price of fuel continues to rise and car insurance can cost three or four hundred dollars a year.
In addition, it is expensive to maintain and repair a car.
A simple tune-up can cost $50.
In an urban area, it might also be expensive to park the car.
Second, owning a car can cause worry and stress.
It is exhausting to drive in rush-hour traffic, or to drive around and around looking for a parking space.
If you leave your car on the street, it might get stolen.
That is something else to worry about.
Finally, everyone needs to think about pollution and energy problems.
Air pollution and noise pollution increase as more and more people drive cars.

Some people think that the best time to begin studying a foreign language is in childhood, and that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn another language.
There is little evidence, however, that children in language classrooms learn foreign languages any better than adults (people over age 15) in similar classroom situations.
In fact, adults have many advantages over children: better memories, more efficient ways of organizing information, better study habits, and greater ability to handle complex mental tasks.
In addition, adults are often better motivated than children: they see learning a foreign language as necessary for education or career.

In other words, by expecting these things to deliver lasting delight, we are setting ourselves up for a fall.
We think, "As soon as I get that new job I'll be happy," then we get the job, our joy is fleeting, we start to feel unfulfilled again, and suddenly we are miserable.
All of our expectations have been dashed.
Maybe we need a new job? And the cycle continues.

If you have a choice between making yourself or your mate look good, choose your mate.

When you've made a mistake, talk it out and ask for forgiveness.
Remember, it takes two to make an argument.
The one who is wrong is the one who will be doing most of the talking.
Never go to bed mad.

If you see a pelican standing with its flat feet on a sandy beach, you may not
think that he is much of a flier. But he is. Watch him as he moves along at about
twenty-six miles an hour, almost touching the tops of the waves. Often he flies with
his companions in a long line of pelicans. They follow one another up, over and
down the waves, move their wings together and stay the same distance form one
another. This is a perfect group flying show.

Their cultures had developed in the course of a history of extreme, and extremely
sub-divided regionalism: the attempt to teach Germans to think of themselves as
Germans first, and the attempt to teach Italians to think of themselves as Italians
first, rather than as natives of a particular small principality or city, was to
disturb the traditional culture from which alone any future culture could grow.

Wendy May, 34, who teaches aerobics in Atlanta, might argue that progress
comes first, then the education of the recalcitrant male:
"The discovery is not that it's sexy to be healthy but that it feels good.
I think most men are frightened by muscles, maybe even by fitness.
Now though, I don't think they have a choice. They may as well decide
it's sexy, because it's here."

"My policies often change, sometimes radically. But so do circumstances. I like
to think of myself as one of those people who adapt themselves to changing
circumstances, who react to the changes, and who sometimes help to create them."
Moshe Dayan

When the newspaper chooses to make a scapegoat of some perhaps quite
harmless person, the results may be very terrible. Fortunately, as yet
this is a fate which most people escape through their obscurity; but as
publicity gets more and more perfect in its methods, there will be an
increasing danger in this novel form of social persecution. This is too
grave a matter to be treated with disdain by the individual who is its
victim, and whatever may be thought of the great principle of the freedom
of the press, I think the line will have to be drawn more sharply than
it is by the existing libel law.

That all men are equal is an assertion to which, at ordinary times, no
sane human being has ever given his assent. A man who has to undergo a
dangerous operation does not act on the supposition that one doctor is
just as good as another.
And when they require Civil Servants, even the most democratic governments
make a careful selection among their theoretically equal subjects.
At ordinary times, we are perfectly certain that men are not equal.
But when, in a democratic country, we think or act politically we are
no less certain that men are equal. Or at any rate―which comes to the
same thing in practice―we behave as though we were certain of men's
equality.

The root of the trouble springs from too much emphasis upon competitive
success as the main source of happiness. I do not deny that the feeling
of success makes it easier to enjoy life.
A painter, let us say, who has been obscure throughout his youth, is
likely to become happier if his talent wins recognition. Nor do I deny
that money, up to a certain point, is very capable of increasing
happiness; beyond that point, I do not think it does so. What I do
maintain is that success can only be one ingredient in happiness, and
is too dearly purchased if all the other ingredients have been
sacrificed to obtain it.

All great books contain boring portions, and all great lives have
contained uninteresting stretches. Imagine a modern publisher confronted
with the Old Testament as a new manuscript submitted to him for the
first time. It is not difficult to think what his comments would be,
for example, on the genealogists.
"Mr. dear sir," he would say, "this chapter lacks pep; you can't expect
your reader to be interested in a mere string of proper names of persons
about whom you tell him so little. You have begun your story, I will
admit, in fine style, and at first I was very favorably impressed, but
you have altogether too much wish to tell it all. Pick out the high
lights, take out the superfluous matter, and bring me back your
manuscript when you have reduced it to a reasonable length."

Remember that man whom you are talking to is a hundred times as much as
interested in himself and his wants and his problems as he is interested
in you and your problems. His toothache means more to him than a famine
in China. Think of that the next time you start a conversation.

A donkey was one day walking along a pond. He slipped and fell into the
pond. It was only a shallow pond, but as he had a heavy load on his back,
he could not stand up. "Help!" cried the donkey in a pitiful voice.
The frogs all around came to him and said coldly. "What a fool you are
to make such a fuss! Just think of us. We are always living here."

Everybody in the world is seeking happiness―and there is one sure way
to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't
depend on outer conditions. It depends on inner conditions.
It isn't what you have or what you are or where you are or what you are
doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
For example, two people may be in the same place, doing the same thing;
both may have about an equal amount of money and prestige―and yet one
may be miserable and the other happy. Why? Because of a different mental
attitude. I saw just as many happy faces among the Chinese coolies
sweating and toiling in the devastating heat of China for seven cents
a day as I see on Park Avenue.
"Nothing is good or bad," said Shakespeare, "but thinking makes it so."
Abe Lincoln once remarked, "Most folks are about as happy as they make
up their minds to be."

Many observers have commented on what seems to be the fact that fear plays
a much smaller part than we should think it must in the life of an animal
which lives dangerously.
Terror he can know, and perhaps he knows it frequently.
But it seems to last only a little longer than the immediate danger it
helps him to avoid, instead of lingering, as in the human being it does,
until it becomes a burden and a threat.
The frightened bird resumes his song as soon as danger has passed, and
so does the frightened rabbit his games.
It is almost as if he knew that "cowards die many times before their
deaths: the valiant never taste of death but once."

The habit of thinking by means of comparison is a fatal one.
When anything pleasant occurs, it should be enjoyed to the full, without
stopping to think that it is not so pleasant as something else that may
possibly be happening to someone else.
"Yes," says the envious man, "this is a sunny day, and it is springtime,
and the birds are singing, but I understand that the springtime in
Sicily is a thousand times more beautiful."

The actor is at the mercy of fortune and the inconstant favor of the
public.
He is forgotten as soon as he ceases to please.
Then it will avail him nothing to have been the idol of the crowd.
It is when I think of this that I find it easy to be indulgent to the
actor's airs and graces, or his vanity, when he is on the crest
of the wave.
Let him be showy and absurd if he likes.
It all lasts such a little while.
And after all his egotism is part of his talent.

Thank you for the time you spent with my associates and me during my
