Well, I think this meeting will run late. How about if I give you a call tomorrow?

Mr. Kim, I would like to talk to you soon about a business deal I think you'd interested in.

T: Listen! What's that sound?
S1: Isn't that a cell phone ringing?
S2: It's not mine. Whew, I'm relieved!
T: What do you think about using cell phones in public?
S1: We should put them on vibration. All these cell phones and beepers seem like pollution.
S2: I don't agree. I think cell phones are useful.
We can use them whenever we want.
T: That's enough. Let's move on.
Please pay attention during class.
Now shall we start today's lesson?

T : Group 2 is.
S : What do you think about our group?
T : Your group is doing well, too.
S : Each member gave his opinion, one by one, and we drew a conclusion.
T : That's a good try.
Let's give group 2 a big hand.

S1 : I got a D on my spelling quiz.
S2 : Don't worry. You can do better next time. I will help you.
S1 : How can you help me?
S2 : I will show you how to memorize big words easily.
S1 : Really? Thanks! But how?
S2 : Even though the words are difficult, try not to think
about them as difficult.
S1 : Is that all?
S2 : No. You should write words down many times.
S1 : Is there any other strategy?
S2 : I don't know. This is what I did and I got good grades.
S1 : I'd better get started then.

The third sentence doesn't seem to be a proper supporting detail.

S1 : Nam-su, what is the topic sentence in the second paragraph?

S : (He draws a circle around the wrong expression.)
T : Perfect, thank you. Mi-ra, what do you think about the second sentence?

Class, I'll write up the correct sentence on the board. Please copy it.

Many boys and girls in the United States start thinking about being on their own during the late elementary school days.
They think about the time when they will be able to live by themselves.
They look forward to eating what they like whenever they like, going to bed when they want to and buying what they choose.
The big choice for many of them is not what career they are going to follow
but when they are going to leave home and be on their own.

Life is determined by a series of choices, each one building on the one before.
The significance of each individual choice may not seem that great.
When added together, however, all the choices put you where you are.
Most people agonize over the big choices and don't even think about the little ones,
though the little choices are what make the big ones possible.
Little choices such as what to eat and how much exercise to do will eventually determine how long you live.

Robert: Do you think e-mail is convenient to use?
Sophia: I'm afraid not. It can take time to check and clear my e-mail box.
And it is wasteful of my time. Sometimes, the lines are busy, and it's difficult to log on.
Sometimes, the system crashes and can't be used.
Robert: Have you made mistakes when you send an e-mail?
Sophia:Yes, of course. The other day I complained about my boss in an e-mail to another employee.
I pressed the wrong key to send it, and everyone in the office got the mail, including my boss.

Almost everyone will tell you to write about the things you know best.
And you may know more than you realize.
You are the expert on at least one very interesting subject―yourself!
Remember that just as you enjoy reading stories about others, your readers will enjoy reading stories about your feelings and about things that happened to you.
As you think about writing topics, don't forget your hobbies and talents.
As an expert, you can give your readers the real facts.
Maybe some of your readers will be inspired to try a new hobby themselves.

Eagles, soaring high and fearless, have always made people think of strength, freedom, and courage.
For this reason, countries, empires, and rulers from ancient Egypt up to the modern United States have made eagles their symbol.
Most Americans have seen enough pictures and emblems to recognize an eagle.
Surprisingly, few know much about the bird.
Even people who study birds, do not know a great deal.
It is difficult to study the eagle's habits because it is dangerous and fierce.
Also, it nests high up in trees or on cliffs which are difficult to reach.

But what I really worry about is that the new language used by the youth on the Internet is becoming even more common than proper Korean.
The strange language has already made its way into the children’s diaries and homework.
When they become grown-ups, two different languages might be used in Korea.
They might think Korean used by older generations is an alien language.
It’s really scary just imagining it.

You probably can recognize this situation
because it is just one of many examples where men and women quarrel.
This problem is not just Tom and Mary’s but is present in almost every relationship.
Solving this problem for Tom and Mary depends not on how much they loved each other
but on how much they understood the opposite sex.
Without knowing that women really do need to talk about problems to feel better,
Tom would continue to think Mary talked too much and resist listening to her.
Without knowing that Tom was reading the news to feel better, Mary would feel ignored and neglected.
She would persist in trying to get him to talk when he didn’t want to.
These two differences can be resolved by first understanding in greater detail how men and women cope with stress.

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you, but I think it is your garbage can that has been spilled in my driveway for the past week.
Anyway, it looks like the can that has been sitting next to your porch,
and it had your name painted on it, but I could still be mistaken.
Maybe we could decide whose it is, but I don't think it is mine.
I could help you clear up the mess, or ask the trashman about it.
It probably isn't either of our faults.

It takes time and effort to change the way you think and act.
Consider the way you brush your teeth.
This is a simple habit pattern.
But a considerable amount of effort is required to change it.
Before beginning to brush, you would have to remind yourself about the new method you plan to use.
While brushing, your mind would wander and you would catch yourself returning to your old method.
After a second reminder you would start using the new method only to forget and have to catch yourself again.
And so it would go until enough time and energy had been spent to make the new method as automatic as the old method was.

Frequent repetition of positive experiences can change your self-concept in a dramatic and positive manner.
One major difference between people with a low level of self-respect and those with a high level is the type of memories they choose to recall.
People with a low level usually think over negative experiences
while people with a high level spend their time recalling and enjoying positive memories.
Set aside five to ten minutes a day to recall positive things and success you have achieved.
As you recall each positive experience, compliment yourself on your success.
Continue with this exercise until it is easy to recall success and you feel good about your self-compliments.

A century of volcanic inactivity of the mountain had made the village people think it nothing to worry about.
Unfortunately it exploded with the force of 10 million tons of TNT one morning.
The top of the mountain was blown away completely and a thick carpet of ash covered the landscape.
Trees were scattered about like tooth-picks.
There was no sign of life.
Most people believed that decades, even centuries, would pass before the land would recover.
However, nature proved to be far more resilient than expected.
The return of life was remarkable.
Today the bush carpets the ground and wildlife is abundant.
A forest of young trees graces the slopes and valleys below the volcano,
and a delicate beauty has returned once more to this vast wilderness area.

Asked when they feel satisfied with their life, most people say they feel so when they think they are superior to others.
That's true.
Many feelings of satisfaction or dissatisfaction have their roots in how we compare ourselves to others.
If we spend most of our time thinking only about those who have more, it's no wonder that we feel unhappy.
When we are surrounded by only those who have less, we feel grateful.
Even though we have exactly the same life either way, our feeling about our life can vary tremendously based on who we compare ourselves with.

My first reaction to this story was to laugh.
But then I began to think.
How many times has our own world been on the brink of destruction?
How many asteroids came within miles of slamming into the earth?
How many times have leaders of countries almost pushed that deadly World War III button, while the rest of humanity happily went along with their lives?
I finally understood what Mr. Joseph was talking about: Our planet is fragile, and we must be careful not to break it.

Indeed, the latest research shows that laughter may have numerous benefits.
Laughter provides excellent exercise, may strengthen the immune system, muffle pain, lighten stress and improve circulation and breathing.
In theory, laughter could even prevent heart attacks and combat cancer.
You would never think that, in laughing, you are actually perpetuating an act of health.
Just think about the last time you laughed really hard ― a real fall-on-floor special. Remember?
Oh, you were some spectacle.
Your mouth twisted open.
With so much blood engorging the veins of your head and neck, your face turned red.
You doubled over, gasping, wheezing like some haywire accordion symphony.
Your stomach, chest and ribs ached.
Rendered speechless, you dribbled your vodka-and-tonic without shame.
Sounds like fun, yes?
A real life-extender, no?
Well, believe it or not, this mirth experience ― this volcanic physical event, this seizure, really ― was quite good for you.

Teacher: What do you think is the best way to solve traffic jams in big cities?
Tom: We should get rid of all the cars in the world.
Tom:
And all of us should use bicycles rather than automobiles.
Then, we won't have to worry about air pollution, either.
I'm convinced that's the best way.

If we behave in a way that lets others know we are sure of ourselves and that we have a strong sense of personal worth, violence will disappear, except as a last resort to protect ourselves from those who have not yet gotten the message.
Unfortunately, explanations do not change behavior.
We can, however, change ourselves, and this will change the way people think about us.
If you continue to do what you always did, you will get what you always got.
You cannot change the world but you CAN change yourself.
When you behave differently, people will look at you with different eyes.

Think about how you learned the phone numbers of people that you call often.
By regular review you continually strengthen the weaker aspects of your memory.
Those are the things you tend to forget.
Focus more attention on the material that you forget.

One day, my mother received a call from a choir director who needed an organist.
Mother said it was time I had a church job and told me to attend a service and think about it.
I did, and who should come in with the choir but the same wondrous creature I bad been admiring on the trolley.
She was the choir director's daughter.
I took the job immediately.

I think the greatest satisfaction one gets is derived from the opinion that people have about you―people who have been around you your whole life―as to your character and your compassion and your fairness, and the way you deal with people, and the way you do your job and whether you have tried to sacrifice other people for your personal benefit.

Dogs, like humans, need fresh water, fresh food and something to think about.
A dog left alone in the backyard will often bark nonstop for hours.
He is trying to get his message across.
Yes, your neighbors can hear it.
And no, they don't like it.
Do you want your neighbors lying awake all night thinking of creative ways to kill you and/or your dog?
If you are not willing to invest the time and energy to train your dog so it can be part of your family, please don't get one.
There is nothing so heartwarming as the love and loyalty of a dog, but it is better for the animal to be destroyed than to be left alone, neglected, bewildered and confused, brimming with love but with no one to accept it.

Society is commonly too cheap.
We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value for each other.
We meet at meals three times a day, and give each other a new taste of that old musty cheese that we are.
We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness, to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not come to open war.
We meet at the post office, and at the sociable, and about the fireside every night; we live thick and are in each other's way, and stumble over one another, and I think that we thus lose some respect for one another.
