He astonished many people by failing in college work after getting high grades in high school./ I am astonished to see him there.
New scientific discoveries constantly amaze us./ I was amazed at the news.
I was astounded by his proposal.
He was startled by a loud noise.
be dumfounded at the discovery
They were flabbergasted by this involuntary outbreak.

[比較] suspect, surmise, suppose, suspicion
They suspected him of cheating at cards, but there was nothing to justify an open accusation./ He suspected that there was sabotage in connection with the fire.
I surmised that you were his son from your striking resemblance to him. suspect는 surmise의 뜻을 나타낼 수도 있지만, 나쁜 뜻을 나타내려고 하지 않는 경우에는, 후자가 모호하지 않으므로 그것을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
Do you suppose that she wished to remain unmarried?/ The roads were no better than the old had supposed./ All right, suppose we do give him the money? What will happen then?
I suspicioned he wasn't a real doctor from the very beginning.

[比較] trace, vestige, track
follow the traces of deer through the snow/ the clear trace of a sleigh
The child carefully removed the traces of jam from his mouth.
There was barely a trace of sugar in the tea.
A few columns were the last vestiges of a Greek temple.(몇몇 기둥만이 그리스 사원의 마지막 흔적이었다.)
automobile tracks in the sand/ The hounds are on the track of the fox.

BEEN THERE DONE THERE.
☞ I experienced that It's nothing new to me.
Ex) a: I was really angry when I was jobless for three months.
b: Oh,Yeah, Been there myself.

I sat there pretending to listen but I was bored to death.

Defense Ministry officials, however, doubted the alleged purpose
of the North Koreans' mission, saying they probably had missions
far more important than that. There was a naval exercise in the
East Sea Sept. 16-18, with scores of warships, P-3C antisubmarine
aircraft and helicopters participating, the officials noted.

As for the number of the North Korean infiltrators, Lee at

25, including 20 crewmen, three commandos and two guides. But in
the afternoon, Lee added one to the number, saying there were 21
submarine crewmen.

Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there.
And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.
And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.

The defense may well raise objections to the court's decision to hear
the case twice a week, instead of the original schedule of once a week.
The defense, pleading for a more leisurely trial, argued the defendants'
health was being damaged and there was not enough time to prepare
from one session to the next, but lately they had abruptly started taking
issue with the judges'``bias'' toward the accused.

Japan insists that its exclusive economic zone(EEZ) begins at Diao Yu Island

The area is well known as the place where China and Japan are asserting

Korean fishing boat was working belonged to China. Therefore, China rather
than Japan is the country that Korea should answer to.

Although there was no tangible reason for my sense of danger, I could not shake off the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.

Since there was no time to get into elaborate details, all that we did was to adumbrate the general features of the plan.

Yesterday I went to a bookstore to buy a book about computers.
I asked a clerk where they had books about computers.
She said that they were on the second floor.
I was surprised that there were a large number of books.
It took me a long time to find one that was for beginners like me.

A man was in his front yard mowing grass when his attractive blonde female neighbor came out of the house and went straight to the mail box.
She opened it, then slammed it shut, and stormed back in the house.
A little later she came out of the house and again went to the mail box and again opened it, then slammed it shut again.
Then, she went back into the house.
Puzzled by her actions, the man asked her, "Is something wrong?"
To which she replied, "There certainly is! My stupid computer keeps giving me a message saying, "YOU'VE GOT MAIL!"

In 1926, there was a double tragedy in her life because her much-loved mother died.
Agatha Christie suffered a nervous breakdown, and one night she abandoned her car and mysteriously disappeared.
She went missing for 11 days and was found in a hotel in the north of England.
It is interesting to note that it was while she was suffering so much that she wrote one of her masterpieces, The Murder of Roger Ackroyal.
Agatha Christie
The Murder of Roger Ackroyal을 썼다는 것은 흥미로운 일이다.

I arrived early at the dentist's.
However there were others still earlier than me.
So after registering my name with the receptionist, I sat down on one of the chairs in the waiting room.
There were newspapers and magazines available for reading but somehow I was not interested in them.
Music was played through two loud speakers in the waiting room.
I recognized a couple of songs.

Daniel Defoe wrote a famous story, The Adventure of Robinson Crusoe.
It was about a man who lived on a desert island.
Actually, there was a real-life Robinson Crusoe, who was a sailor.
One day the sailor had a fight with his captain.
He left the ship and stayed on an island off the coast of Chile.
Defoe heard about what the sailor had done to survive in the desert island.
Defoe used the sailor's adventures as a model to write his story.
Robinson Crusoe

Mr. Kim and a flight attendant spent about fifteen minutes filling everything out together.
Mr. Kim finally handed in the forms.
After half an hour wait, the supervisor called him over and said,
“Unclaimed luggage usually comes in on the conveyor belt on your right,
but since it was broken today, all luggage is coming in downstairs at gate 5.
You can go down now; your bags are there.”
Mr. Kim thanked the supervisor, went downstairs, and finally got his luggage.
Mr. Kim

Yesterday evening my son came in to ask if I felt like playing ball with him.
I was trying to get important work done, and I almost said no.
Then it occurred to me that my boy would never be a seven-year-old again.
So we went out onto the front lawn.
With the sun setting, we enjoyed being together.
There was a sense of beauty about the whole experience.

Evidence that eating chocolate does not cause *acne comes from two studies:
one at the Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the other by the U.S. Naval Academy.
Their research showed some interesting results.
They found that there was no difference in the skin condition between the people who ate chocolate and those who did not eat chocolate.
There is also no proof that chocolate is the cause of tooth decay.
In fact, it is believed that the cocoa butter in chocolate forms a coating over teeth that may help to protect them.

Because of my job, I was only able to sail during summer vacations,
so the trip around the world had to be broken up into small pieces.
The first section was from New York to Bermuda.
From there, I went to Venezuela, then to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.
I wandered all through the South Pacific, stopping for long visits in Fiji.
Occasionally, I would be joined by friends.
But most of the time, my only companions were dolphins and flying fish.
Sometimes a bird would stop by to hitchhike or for a little rest.

In 1912, Jim Thorpe won gold medals in the Olympics in Sweden.
When Jim's picture appeared in newspapers around the world, however, an American reporter recognized him.
He remembered watching Jim play on a pro baseball team in 1911.
The Olympic Committee was told of this.
There's a rule that says an Olympic athlete may not play for money.
So his medals were taken away from him.
