→ 많은 공통점을 갖다: have a great deal in common
→ 본질에서가 아니라 정도에서: not in essence but in degree
→ 「그러나 시대가 다르고 작가가 다르고 보면 그문제에 대한 해답도 다르다」는 앞 문장에 이어서…, but with different solutions according to different authors who wrote at different times로 풀어서 표현한다.

Why was it that the city died? Researchers have found no signs of infections or invasions.
But they have found signs that suggest the people of this city themselves burned their temples and some of their other buildings.
Excavations revealed that piles of wood had been placed around these structures and set on fire.
Some archaeologists think that the ancient urban people must have burned their temples
and left their city in anger against their gods for permitting a long famine.

In North America, physical punishment by parents, as long as it is not severe, is seen as necessary discipline by many people.
However, sociological researchers and parents have insisted that we seriously consider stopping the physical punishment of children.
The most important reason is that all people have the right to protect themselves, and children are people, too.

There are some characteristics of local governments in the U.S. that set them apart from those in most other countries.
In the U.S., local government is a local “self-government.”
This means that the people of a community decide for themselves, through locally elected officials, what will be done within the community.
In contrast, a local government in most other countries is a system through which the national government administers the affairs of the various districts of the country.

Parents worrying about recent TV images of terrorism and war affecting their children should give them a pencil and paper.
Children have much greater difficulty expressing themselves with language than do adults.
Drawing is an easier way to communicate.
Drawing often gives clues to a child's feelings and can act as a starting place for conversations.
If faces are frowning or if acts of violence are described, your child is most likely struggling with feelings that need discussing.
So ask your children to draw while talking to them.
Children who drew as they discussed an emotional experience gave twice as much as information as those who only talked about it.

Research indicates that girls entering junior high school feel less self-confident than they did in elementary school,
and they become less self-confident with each successive year of school.
In contrast, the same research shows that boys become more self-confident with each passing year.
Parents, teachers, and counselors can have a significant impact on how girls see themselves.
When offered the right kind of support,
they can potentially avoid suffering from the common problems rooted in girls' low self-esteem.

As a nation, the United States has doubled its living standard in the last 50 years.
Now Americans enjoy the fruits of an economy that provides not only basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter but also seemingly limitless luxuries.
If you doubt this, spend some time in other countries; the bountiful and luxurious nature of America's standard of living will be quite apparent.
At no other time in history have Americans experienced such along ride of high living.
The vast majority of people in the United States maintain a standard of living that far exceeds that of other countries.
Yet, notwithstanding such economic growth and material abundance,
the percentage of Americans who rate themselves as very happy has decreased since the 1950s.

Computer crime has become a big problem of the world that is likely to continue far into the future.
Computer criminals are often quite different from other kinds of criminals.
According to some experts, these criminals seem to lock themselves away from other people and live in their own fantasy “microworlds.”
They are also generally quite young.
They break into others' computers in order to steal, add, or change information.
For many of them, this is a kind of game, a part of their fantasy life.
However, it is a dangerous “game,” and, as a result, many individuals and corporations are very concerned about computer security.

lly wait only one second or less for a response―no time for a child to think.
When adults increase their ‘wait time' to three seconds or more, children respond with more logical, complete and creative answers.
And rather than telling children what to think, give them time to think for themselves.
If a child gets the answer wrong, be patient.
You can help when it's needed by asking a few pointed questions.

The more heartless our community becomes, the less space we seem to have in our hearts for others.
Nearly all the people you happen to meet in life merit your consideration.
Many of them will be there to help you to deliver your pizza, bag your groceries, and make you coffee.
And millions more people, most of whom you will never meet, won't help you, indeed can't help you,
and may not even be able to help themselves.
They also deserve your respect.
If you are not in the habit of being nice to all these people, then get in the habit now.

Almost everyone will tell you to write about the things you know best.
And you may know more than you realize.
You are the expert on at least one very interesting subject―yourself!
Remember that just as you enjoy reading stories about others, your readers will enjoy reading stories about your feelings and about things that happened to you.
As you think about writing topics, don't forget your hobbies and talents.
As an expert, you can give your readers the real facts.
Maybe some of your readers will be inspired to try a new hobby themselves.

Teenagers who feel insecure about their own status and popularity often try to reassure themselves by pointing a finger at someone who is obviously out.
An insecure group leader may try to assert power by getting everyone in his/her crowd to mock an outsider.
When dealing with a scapegoat, it’s important not to play both sides of the fence, being compassionate to those who are being isolated while giving support and approval to the bullies who are tormenting them.
Let the bullies know how angry you are about what they are doing.

In primitive societies, people had to fight wild beasts, not only for self-defense, but also for food.
In addition, they couldn't avoid coming into conflict with other groups.
As the result, people ended up practicing different forms of fighting to protect themselves.
During this period, when grappling was a predominant method of combat, various techniques were invented.
And, naturally, this developed into a martial art.
A wall painting in an ancient tomb shows this fact and there are many historical records of it as well.
Nowadays, ssireum(Korean wrestling) is a type of folk competition in which two players, holding on to a long piece of cloth tied around the waist,
try to use their strength and various techniques to wrestle each other down to the ground.

For a long time psychoanalysis was the only psychotherapy practiced in Western society, and it is based on the theories of Sigmund Freud.
According to Freud's views, psychological disturbances are due to anxiety about hidden conflicts in the unconscious parts of one's personality.
One job of the Psychoanalysts, therefore, is to help make the patients aware of the unconscious impulses and desires that are causing the anxiety.
Psychoanalysts believe that understanding these unconscious motives is very important.
If patients can have that kind of understanding, called insight, they have taken the first step toward gaining control over their behavior and freeing themselves of their problems.

Before Social Security existed, Americans worried that they would not be able to support themselves if they lost their jobs.
A worker who lost his job could turn to local groups that provided charity or relief, but many Americans were ashamed to ask for help.
Then in 1935 Congress passed the Social Security Act.
This law said that almost all workers had to pay a small part of their income to a special government fund.
Then if the worker lost his job, the government would pay him money out of the fund.
Now Americans knew that if they lost their jobs, they would still be able to survive.
And they were not ashamed to take Social Security because they knew that they had already worked to earn it.

day than in the 1950s.
You would be wrong, according to many surveys taken in rich countries.
These tend to show that, once a country has lifted itself out of poverty,
further rises in income seem not to create a meaningful rise in the proportion of people who consider themselves as happy.

Earthquakes themselves are unpredictable.
Although any powerful submarine earthquake can bring a dangerous tsunami, not all such earthquakes actually result in a big wave.
Even though you have an effective detection system, it is useless if you cannot evacuate a threatened area.
Here, speed is of the essence.
Computer modeling can help show which areas are likely to be safest,
but common sense is often the best guide―run like the wind, away from the sea.
Evacuation warnings, too, should be easy to give as long as people are awake.
Radios are very effective to tell people to run.

That can be answered at two levels.
An evolutionary biologist would tell you that it is because women get evolutionary bonus points from living long enough to help bring up the grandchildren.
Men, by contrast, wear themselves out competing for the right to procreate in the first place.
That is probably true, but not much help to the medical profession.
However, a group of researchers has just come up with a medically useful answer.
It is that while 70-year-old men have the hearts of 70-year-olds, those of their female peers resemble the hearts of 20-year-olds.

When it comes to teaching moral behavior, it's not what you say but what you do that counts the most.
The negative side of this is illustrated by the words “The footsteps a child follows are most likely the ones his parents thought they had covered up.” Positive role-modeling, on the other hand, can bring big rewards.
Every year, Amy's parents gave holiday dinners to unfortunate families.
At age ten, Amy organized a fund-raiser for giving free meals to poor children.
In an age when so many kids are thinking only of themselves, how did Amy give a helping hand?
“I watched my parents,” she says simply.

In the United States, numberless people are illiterate for a variety of reasons.
Some dropped out of school.
Others came to the country from another country.
Still others had ineffective teachers, or were not ready to learn reading when it was taught.
The problem, however, begins in the home, not at school.
The majority of children with illiterate parents become illiterate themselves.
Conversely, preschoolers whose parents read to them are better prepared to begin school and perform at higher rates than those not exposed to reading.

Everyone will have to educate themselves the best they can, become an expert in some niche, so that they can be in the right place to advise someone else or perform some other service.

This trend necessitates a change in the ways parents allocate the time spent with their children and the time they have to spend for themselves and with each other.

And pleasure that I get from my children is diminished by the realization that they will probably distance themselves from me as they grow older.

To converse well, either with another person or with a crowd, it is vitally necessary to feel relaxed and comfortably at ease.
Many intelligent people have thought themselves slow and dull because they could not produce witty remarks in rapid succession as their companions seemed able to do.
This is often because of a pang of embarrassment or self-consciousness, which is akin to stage fright.
Feeling a little uncomfortable and ill at ease in the presence of others, one finds his mind won't work right.
It simply refuses to come up with the bright remark or the lively comeback that would have found so beautiful a place in the conversation.

Whom, then, do I call educated, since I exclude the arts and sciences and specialties?
First, those who manage well the circumstances which they encounter day by day, and who possess a judgment which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise and rarely misses the expedient course of action;
next, those who are decent and honorable in their intercourse with all with whom they associate, tolerating easily and good-naturedly what is unpleasant or offensive in others and being themselves as agreeable and reasonable to their associates as it is possible to be;
furthermore, those who hold their pleasure always under control and are not duly overcome by their misfortunes, bearing up under them bravely and in a manner worthy of our common nature;
finally, and most important of all, those who are not spoiled by successes and do not desert their true selves and become arrogant, but hold their ground steadfastly as intelligent men, not rejoicing in the good things which have come to them through chance rather than in those which through their own nature and intelligence are theirs from their birth.
Those who have a character which is in accord, not with one of these things, but with all of them―these, I contend, are wise and complete men, possessed of all the virtues.

"May this new couple who enter the holy estate of marriage, keeping this blessed circumstance in their hearts, be lastingly true to their vows, love and respect each other, help each other in stress and woe, keep themselves pure both in body and mind, and encourage each other in the promotion of all virtues.
These are the essentials to a happy wedded life and the true way of living in accordance with the teaching of the Buddha."

One morning a band of commuters were gathered at the railway station when the stationmaster's voice came over the loudspeaker.
The commuters braced themselves.
Would this be the usual announcement about a delay?
"Because of circumstances beyond our control," the stationmaster intoned, "the seven o'clock train is running on time today."

Something to Remember
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot further brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

I want to thank the smokers of the world for their consideration.
Since smoking has been banned in many public areas there has been a remarkable change in attitude.
Rather than anger at being pushed outside on cold, rainy days, I have witnessed polite cooperation.
Even in areas where smoking is not specifically prohibited I have seen smokers excuse themselves from groups to go outside.
Most important, I have seen smokers excuse themselves when small children are present.
As a former smoker, I think these considerate folks deserve special thanks for their remarkable change in behavior.

Millions of people who consider themselves non-smokers should think again.
If they allow smoking in their homes, they are smokers whether they like it or not.

I frequently see adults working in stores and offices who have no business being anywhere but home in bed.
Invariably, they end up staying home for a week or two because they have completely worn themselves out trying not to give in to an illness.
A friend of mine, after a month of such foolishness, ended up in the hospital with pneumonia.

I am opposed to the vision of the Protestant fundamentalist church or of the Catholic Church which sees atheists just as our opponents.
In my book "Global Responsibility: In Search of a New World Ethic", I tried to find common ground in all religions.
We need global ethics!
We would see a great change if we could abolish what is inhuman in religions.
Everything that is human should be fostered.
Religions should begin this examination themselves.
Every religion has something which could be changed.
To persecute theologians, as the Vatican does, in the 20th century, is really not humane.
All religions have in common ethical commands, such as not to kill, lie or steal.
We have seen that religions which might have seemed oppressive in the past can be forces for liberation, whether in East Europe, Latin America, the Philippines or South Africa.

The truth is this: men quote proverbs the better to express themselves.
Proverbs are the wit of the inarticulate.
Proverbs are the gospel of the poor.
Folk sayings are the college of the masses.

If people could see themselves yelling, they would be shocked at how uncivilized they appear to those who are trying to help them.
I'm trained to deal with difficult customers, but my job would be so much easier if the public realized that we must work within specified guidelines prescribed by law.

The only long-term solution is to make life in the rural areas more attractive, which would encourage people to stay there.
This could be achieved by providing incentives for people to go and work in the villages.
Facilities in the rural areas, such as transport, health, and education services, should be improved to foster a more positive attitude to rural life.
The improvement of rural lives is doubly important, because the cities themselves cannot be developed without the prior development of the rural areas.

The fact is that the less developed countries(LDCs) should not have to be producing primarily for developed country markets.
In the first place, they could trade more with each other, and be less dependent on developed countries for trade.
The LDCs have within themselves all that is required for growth.

They have surpluses of fuel and of the principal minerals.
They have enough land to feed themselves, if they cultivate it properly.
They are capable of learning the skills of manufacturing, and of saving the capital required for modernization.
Their development does not in the long run depend on the existence of the developed countries, and their potential for growth would be unaffected even if all the developed countries were to sink under the sea.

We aim at making them like ourselves instead of teaching them to be themselves―new prophets and teachers, new adventurers in the wilderness of the world.

Our problem has been trying to depend on government to police the polluters.
Polluting has been against the law for a long time, but there will never be enough government regulation to prevent the illegal dumping of waste chemicals or the midnight venting of smokestacks.

An authentic proletarian revolution had risen, just as Marx had predicted,
only to be put down by the guns of the oppressor class: the Communists themselves.

Their cultures had developed in the course of a history of extreme, and extremely
sub-divided regionalism: the attempt to teach Germans to think of themselves as
Germans first, and the attempt to teach Italians to think of themselves as Italians
first, rather than as natives of a particular small principality or city, was to
disturb the traditional culture from which alone any future culture could grow.

Another is that, as Europeans go, the English are not intellectual. They have
a horror of abstract thought; they feel no need for any philosophy or systematic
"world-view." Nor is this because they are "practical," as they are so fond of
claiming for themselves. One has only to look at their methods of town planning
and water supply, their obstinate clinging to everything that is out of date
and a nuisance, a spelling system that defies analysis, and a system of weights
and measures that is intelligible only to the compilers of arithmetic books,
to see how little they care about mere efficiency.

Up until some four decades ago fashionable ladies would no more have

One of the causes of unhappiness among intellectuals in the present day
is that so many of them, especially those whose skill is literary, find
no opportunity for the independent exercise of their talents, but have
to hire themselves out to rich corporations directed by philistines, who
insist upon their producing what they themselves regard as fatal nonsense.

If you were to inquire among journalists in either England or America
whether they believed in the policy of the newspaper for which they
worked, you would find, I believe, that only a small minority do so;
the rest, for the sake of a livelihood, prostitute their skill to purposes
which they believe to be harmful. Such work cannot bring any real
satisfaction.

Sometimes slowness and depth of response are intimately connected.
Time is required in order to digest impressions, and translate them into
substantial ideas. The 'slow but sure' person, whether man or child, is
one in whom impressions sink and accumulate, so that thinking is done at
a deeper level of value than by those with a lighter load.
Many a child is rebuked for slowness, for not answering promptly, when
his forces are taking time to gather themselves together to deal
effectively with the problem at hand. In such cases, failure to afford
time and leisure encourages, if it does not actually create, habits of
speedy, but snapshot and superficial, judgment.

Health is generally regarded as a private property. There have indeed been
slogans which have emphasized this, often inaccurately. It is not true, as
sometimes claimed, that "health is wealth." There are many healthy people
who are not wealthy and also the other way around.
Another slogan is to the effect that life is not worth living without good
health. Certainly it is true that good health contributes greatly to the
joy of living and should be preserved and cherished. At the same time there
are many handicapped persons who have been able to make a good life for
themselves and to set a notable example to their fellow human beings by
the courageous way in which they have faced and conquered disability,
disease, and suffering. Obviously it is foolish to sacrifice health
needlessly. It is just as unwise to lie down and give up when your health
is impaired.

"Because we live in the modern age," says a comedian, "women now have
many choices: They can have a job or not have a job. They can be married
or unmarried, married with children, married with children and a job,
unmarried with children and a job, unmarried with children and no job,
unmarried with children who themselves have jobs, have a job and an
au pair who has children…."
"Men, unfortunately, have the same choice we've always had: we can
work or we can go to jail."

Women who say they are indifferent to clothes, like men who say they do
not mind what they eat, should be distrusted; there is something wrong.
And men who sneer at women's passionate concern about dress should be
banished to the woods. For my part I delight in women when they go into
a conference-huddle over new clothes.
They seem to me then most themselves and the furthest removed from my sex.
They are at such times completely in their own world.

There is a dilemma―probably a false dilemma―facing people who run schools
and colleges. Should they do most for the cleverer, or for the less
cleverer? In one sense, the answer is obvious. If you want to teach a
potential nuclear physicist, or a great musician, then he will need to
be taught more than most of us. On the other hand, since it is clear
that clever children for the greater part teach themselves, it might be
thought that the greatest effort should be given to those that do not
teach themselves.

On April 1 my daughter, a pharmacy manager, found a note on her desk:
"Your business will be inspected today by local health authorities."
She rushed into the laboratory to put all the bottles and jars in order.
Only when she heard laughter coming from the staff did she realize
what date it was.
About two hours later two well-dressed gentlemen entered the ship
and identified themselves as officers from the local health department.

National characteristics are not easy to pin down, and when pinned down,
they often turn out to be trivialities or seem to have no connection
