William Jefferson Clinton
zipper-gate(지퍼가 뭔지는 아시죠)의 Bill Clinton입니다.
William은 맨 앞에 오니까 first name이고 주어진 이름이니까 given name.
직업에 따른 성으로는 Carpenter(목수), Smith(대장장이), Baker(빵장수),
Cook(요리사), Tailor(재단사), Clerk(목사) 등이 있고요,
Robert
first name을 쓰죠. They are on a first-name basis.
He can call everybody by his first name.
He has a wide acquaintance. He gets around a lot.
Rich is his middle name.
Honesty is my middle name.
If honesty has a name, it's my name.
본명은 real name 예명은 under the name of ∼라고 해요
She is well-known under the name of Madonna.
My name is Kim Tae-hee. We Koreans always introduce ourselves last name first.

"We're starting with a system that's like the 'Wild, Wild West,'
said Abel. "Everybody wants it to be the opportunity to get
rich quick, but the flip side is everyone wants total accountability,
instantaneously, on a system that was never designed to handle
the kind of traffic or address the kinds of issues that people
are now addressing on the Web and in the domain name system."

Tax Reduction for Rich ? :
The draft revision of the inheritance tax system to be put forward
at the National Assembly for approval by the end of this year, according
to finance officials, is mainly aimed at cutting taxes levied on
mid-income earners and their spouses and taxing the rich more heavily.

The amendment is also designed to promote savings and facilitate
adequate redistribution of wealth, they said. However, it is hard to
expect it to do much in achieving these two important tasks. In fact, the
rich will enjoy much reduced tax burdens under the proposed revision.

Even within the ruling New Korea Party, voices have been raised in
opposition to the revision, with some senior party staffers having
determined it to ``unreasonably favor the rich.'' A 1 billion won tax
base means some three times that figure in real values and therefore the
proposed bill will practically allow very rich people to pay nothing for
inheritance of up to 3 billion won worth of property.

Already many have linked the first revision of the inheritance tax law
in 46 years to the presidential election next year. Some speculate that
it is a gift to the rich in return for the loss they suffered from the
real-name financial transaction system implemented by the Kim
Young-sam administration.

Despite these grave figures presented by the Bank of Korea and
economic think tanks, the government refuses to admit the approach of a
recession and did little to prepare for an economic crisis. Instead, it
trumpeted the economic performance which brought per capita income
of $10,000 at the end of last year and is eager to crown its
achievements with entry to the rich men's club, the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development.

Russians are big soap opera fans :
one of the most popular TV shows that ever aired in Russia was a Mexican soap opera called 'The Rich Also Cry.'
It was the story of a rich and powerful man who married his beautiful maid.
Russian viewers also love Russian game shows, music videos, and broadcasts from the parliament.
In fact, when the Russian government first aired a daily broadcast of its parliament in 1989,
people were so interested that they stayed home from work to watch it.

Schubert spent his whole life in poverty.
But he had one noble purpose in life.
That was to write down the beautiful musical thoughts which seemed to flow from his brain in an endless rush of melody.
As one of the most productive composers, Schubert wrote music as freely as one would write a friendly letter.
He just produced what was in him, and brought us a rich treasure of music.

The jobs that most companies are doing with information today would have been impossible several years ago.
At that time, getting rich information was very expensive,
and the tools for analyzing it weren't even available until the early 1990s.
But now the tools of the digital age give us a way to easily get, share, and act on information in new ways.

Our experience of life comes through our five senses.
Each sense gives us specific and useful information about our physical world.
Imagine for a moment that you didn't have the sense of smell.
How much less rich your world would be.
In our traditional work culture we act as if we have only one sense, either visual or auditory.
Most of us are trained to use one of these two senses as our dominant sense, to the exclusion of our other senses.
Learning to use all your senses is a good way to enrich every moment of your life.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the rich of New York were deeply impressed by the parks in Europe and suggested establishing a park.
The 843-acre land made of marsh and gravel, which was hard to develop as land for housing, was purchased to be designed as a park.
Full-scale construction began after kicking the poor residents out to other regions.
In the respect that the United States adopted many ideas from Europe for development, the history of Central Park is that of the United States.

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.
Taylor

According to their cultures, people have pierced and decorated their bodies throughout history.
Ear piercing has been popular in Europe since the eighteenth century,
when rich women wore diamonds in their ears to show their wealth.
People in India have been piercing their noses for a long time.
Group members in America often show that they belong by piercing certain body parts.
And some cultures have considered it beautiful to push needles through their skin.

In order to maintain strong bones, people must eat plenty of calcium-rich food.
Leafy green vegetables and low-fat dairy products are excellent sources of calcium.
They put stiffness into your skeletal system and keep your bones from turning rubbery and fragile.
Your body uses calcium for more than keeping your bones strong, however.
Calcium also helps cells to divide, it allows muscles to work,
and it plays an important role in moving protein and nutrients around inside the body.
If you do not absorb enough calcium from what you eat, to do these things, your body will take it from your bones.
Because your body does not produce calcium, you must continually replenish the supply.

For the past half-century, those lucky enough to have been born in a rich country have had every prospect of growing richer.
On average, incomes in Britain, America and Japan have easily doubled over that time.
On top of this come the benefits of longer lives of better quality, thanks to advances in medicine
and to a plethora of consumer goods making living easier and more enjoyable.
You might even expect folks to be a great deal happier

day than in the 1950s.
You would be wrong, according to many surveys taken in rich countries.
These tend to show that, once a country has lifted itself out of poverty,
further rises in income seem not to create a meaningful rise in the proportion of people who consider themselves as happy.
* plethora : 과잉공급

The rich and unhappy are likely to prize possessions such as a fancy car or an expensive necklace.
Unfortunately, they don't see objects as a link to other people but as something to stand out from others.
For example, Doris Duke was the only child of a multi-millionaire.
By the time she reached adulthood, she could fulfill any desire
― from the B-25 bomber she remodeled for luxury travel, to her ceiling-high goldfish tanks.
Yet when she died three years ago, news reports detailed a lonely life of deep unhappiness.

Anthropologists used to believe that romantic love was invented by Europeans in the Middles Ages.
By romantic love, they mean an intense attraction and longing to be with the loved person.
Some anthropologists believed that this kind of love spread from the west to other cultures only recently.
Others thought that it may have existed in some other cultures, but only among the rich and privileged.
Now, however, most anthropologists agree that romantic love has probably always existed among humans.
It is not surprising, then, that stories of romance, like Romeo and Juliet, are found in many cultures around the world.

Americans see much of life as a race for success.
For them, equality means that everyone should have equal chance to enter the race and win.
In other words, equality of opportunity may be thought of as an ethical rule.
It helps ensure that the race for success is a fair one and that a person does not win just because he or she was born into a wealthy family.
President Abraham Lincoln expressed this belief in the 1860s when he said, "We wish to allow the humblest man an equal chance to get rich with everybody else.
When one starts poor, as most do in the race of life, a free society is such that he knows he can better his condition: he knows that there is no fixed condition of labor for his whole life."

Americans have watched their big cities fall slowly into disrepair and die.
Many middle-class people leave the cities, and the very rich and the very poor stay behind.

The evil, I suppose, lies in our education.
We standardize our children.
We aim at making them like ourselves instead of teaching them to be themselves―new prophets and teachers, new adventurers in the wilderness of the world.
We are more concerned about putting our thoughts into their heads than in drawing their thoughts out, and we succeed in making them rich in knowledge but poor in wisdom.

American financial tycoon Carnegie spoke of the disgrace of dying rich and argued
that the millionare should "be but a trustee for the poor."

In Egypt, a patina of superficial prosperity gilds a fragile economic core. The
revenues from new trade policies and foreign investment are flowing to an all too
visible superclass of the very rich. But at the same time, The great mass of Egyptians
are struggling with overcrowding, a breakdown of critical services and lack of productive
jobs.
* patina:a thin crust or film;appearance.

The third error is the notion that learning and teaching always ought to
have immediate results, show a profit, lead to success. It is true that education is
intended to benefit the entire personality. But it is not possible, not even
desirable, to show that many of the important subjects which are taught as part
of education will make the learner rich, fit him for social life or find him
a job.

Usually the raids are foiled by alert guard bees assigned to protect the

Even in the boom years, planners in both countries acknowledged that they
would one day have to rationalize and modernize their economies if they
were ever to make the great leap into the ranks of the rich.
But the day of reckoning came sooner than was expected.

*ease 편안; 안락 the state of being comfortable and without worry or anxiety:
Gloria is a rich woman now, and leads a life of ease.

One of the causes of unhappiness among intellectuals in the present day
is that so many of them, especially those whose skill is literary, find
no opportunity for the independent exercise of their talents, but have
to hire themselves out to rich corporations directed by philistines, who
insist upon their producing what they themselves regard as fatal nonsense.
If you were to inquire among journalists in either England or America
whether they believed in the policy of the newspaper for which they
worked, you would find, I believe, that only a small minority do so;
the rest, for the sake of a livelihood, prostitute their skill to purposes
which they believe to be harmful. Such work cannot bring any real
satisfaction.

*well off 부유한 rich; well off for money:
The government claims that most people are better-off than they were five years ago.

I have frequently experienced myself the mood in which I felt that all
is vanity; I have emerged from it not by means of any philosophy, but
owing to some imperative necessity of action. If your child is ill, you
may be unhappy, but you will not feel that all is vanity; you will feel
that the restoring of the child to health is a matter to be attended to
regardless of the question whether there is ultimate value in human
life or not. A rich man may, and often does, feel that all is vanity,
but if he should happen to lose his money, he would feel that his next
meal was by no means vanity.

The truth is that rich doesn't necessarily make people happy.

Some people change their eating patterns to meet the needs of different
situations. They have certain ideas about which food will increase their
athletic ability, help them lose weight, or put them in the mood for
romance. For example, these people choose fruit and vegetables to give
them strength for physical activity. They choose foods rich in fiber,
such as bread and cereal for breakfast, and salads for lunch to prepare
them for business appointments. For romantic dinners , however, they
choose shrimp and lobster.

Farming began about 12,000 years ago and it has developed very quickly in
the last 300 years. There are no signs that the speed of development will
slow down. Agriculture will continue to develop in three main ways.
First, farming will become even more efficient by using new types of
technology. Many processes will be controlled by computers. Second, new
ways of growing, storing and selling crops will be developed which can be
used by poor people as well as rich people. Third, agricultural products
will be used in many ways.

The American economy now exhibits a wider gap between rich and poor than
it has at any other time since World War II. The most basic reason, put
simply, is that America itself is ceasing to exist as an economic system
separate from the rest of the world. One can no more meaningfully speak
of an "American economy" than of a "California economy." America is
becoming only a region of a global economy.

There are plenty of signs of the growing gap between the information rich and the information poor in our evermore complex, technology driven, so-called information society.

The Earth comprises three principal layers : the dense, iron-rich core,
the mantle made of silicate rocks that are semimolten at depth, and the
thin, solid-surface crust. There are two kinds of crust, a lower and
denser oceanic crust and an upper, lighter continental crust found over
only about 40 percent of the Earth's surface. The rocks of the crust are
of very different ages.

Much has been written about the diversity of terrestrial organisms,
particularly the exceptionally rich life associated with tropical

diversity of life in the sea even though coral reef systems are
comparable to rain forests in terms of richness of life.

It's a family - a mother with four cubs.
She has just one brief summer in which to teach them their mountain survival techniques.
Rearing four cubs to this age is an exceptional feat,
but she does have an excellent territory, rich in food and water.

At this time of the year bears should be fattening up for the winter.
Yet they gather in some numbers on these apparently barren slopes.
They're searching for a rather unusual food -
moths.
Millions have flown up here to escape the heat of the lowlands
and they're now roosting among the rocks.
Moths may seem a meager meal for a bear,
but their bodies are rich in fat
and can make all the difference in a bear's annual struggle for survival.

As the snows retreat trees come into bloom.
Rhododendrons -
here in their natural home they form great forests
and fill the landscape with the covers of a new season.
These forests are a host to a rich variety of springtime migrants.
Beneath the blooms - another display.

Only 3 percent of the water on our planet is fresh.
Yet these precious waters are rich with surprise.
All life on land is ultimately dependent upon fresh water.

The Amazon transports a billion tonnes of sediment a year,
sediment clearly visible at the mixing of the waters
where one massive tributary, the Rio Negro, flows into the main river.
Its waters are wonderfully rich.

To date over 3,000 species of their fish have been described -
more than in the whole of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Amazon is so large and rich in fish
that it can support fresh water dolphins.

As the sea ice retreats life can journey farther south.
Antarctic waters are so rich that visitors come from far and wide to harvest them.
Vast numbers of chinstrap penguins come ashore to breed.
No bird will lay their eggs directly onto ice
so bare rock is a vital commodity. The best patches are worth the climb.

The prairies of North America.
This rich pasture once supported the greatest herds ever seen on our planet.
There were once sixty million bison
but no animal is immune to intensive hunting by man
or the destruction of it's habitat
and a century ago the bison were reduced to barely a thousand.
Now, thanks to rigorous protection, the species is recovering.
The growing season is long
and the grass here can support herds all year around.

Male bison weigh in at one ton.
In high summer the bulls are fat from the rich grazing
and in prime condition but only a few will mate.
Exactly which few is about to be decided.

Not all temperate plains are so rich and colorful in the summer.
This is midsummer on the Tibetan Plateau
the highest great plain in the world.
Despite the conditions, grass survives, and in sufficient quantities
to support the highest of all grazing herds
those of the wild yak.
Even in summer life is hard
temperatures rarely rise above freezing, and the air is thin.
It's also exceptionally dry for one very big reason
the Himalayas.
The great mountain range acts as a barrier
preventing clouds moving in from the south
and this casts a giant rain shadow that leaves Tibet high and dry.
Grass clings to life even as desiccating winds remove
what little moisture remains in the soil.
So long as grass can survive, so can grazers.

Because fruiting trees are so valuable, many monkeys are territorial
And if you live in the treetops
there's perhaps no better way of staking your claim to a territory, than this.
The calls of the siamang gibbons begin
as a duet between the dominant male and female.
The rest of their families soon join in, and it results in a frenzy of activity.
The calls can carry over a mile, and their message is clear.
They tell any neighboring siamangs this is our territory. Keep out.
Up here the calls of siamang gibbons seem to dominate the airwaves
but with the jungle's incredible diversity
there are countless others trying to be heard too.
Every layer seems to beat to a different tune.
In the early morning the forest's chorus is particularly rich.
Sounds travel further in the cooler air
But few calls can penetrate as far through the dense vegetation as this one
the deep bass solo of a male orangutan.

In temperate forests, the buildup of leaf litter creates rich stores of nutrients.
That however, doesn't happen here.
Nutrients that reach the soil are leeched out by the rain
but fungi are connected to tree roots by their underground filaments
and by quickly consuming the dead
they help to recycle crucial minerals straight back into the trees.
And this recycling happens faster here, than anywhere else on the planet.

At night, the algae are inactive but then, the polyps put out even more tentacles
so coral in effect feeds around the clock.
This well balanced alliance brings benefits to both polyps and algae
and between them, they turn the barren seas into rich gardens.

The desert of Bahrain seems a very unlikely place
to find a crowded bustling colony of seabirds
But every year, a hundred thousand socotra cormorants gather here to breed.
It's swelteringly hot
and only vigorous panting can prevent the birds from fatal overheating.
This hardly seems a good place to rear young
but at least, there are no land based predators here.
The only source of trouble is likely to be the neighbors
so each nest is built just beyond pecking reach
But what about food?
There's only bare sand and the warm shallow sea beyond.
Neither seem likely to produce enough nourishment to support bird life on this scale.
The answer is blowing in the wind.
Sand whipped up by Shamals offshore winds
blows into the seas of the Arabian Gulf.
With the grains come nutrients, which act as fertilizer
and they transform the shallow sea into a rich fishing ground
So, paradoxically, it's the roasted sands of Arabia that prevent the gulf
from being another desert in the sea.

All across the tropics, humpbacks are heading away from the Equator
towards the rich temperate seas of both the southern and the northern hemispheres.
These are colder, rougher, and more dangerous waters.
Mother and calf must stay close.
