Throw it in the rubbish barrel
In its center stood the abandoned capitol building. Its steps were littered with trash.

S1 : What game is it today?
T : A guessing game. First of all, let's make teams. Any good idea?
S2 : Rocks-papers-scissors.
T : Anyone who wins is team "A." The others are team "B." Sounds good?
S1 : Why not?
T : Then, play rocks-papers-scissors with your partner. Are you finished?
S1 : Yes.
T : Now listen carefully to what I am saying and guess the word. Do you understand?
S1 : Of course. I'm sure I'll know the answer.
T : Great! Today team "A" won the guessing game 4 to 1. Congratulations!

S1 : Why can't we grow our hair long at school?
I don't think there is difference between long and short hair.
S2 : I agree with you! I don't think long hair is bad.
S1 : When do you think our school is going to let us have any hair style we want?
S2 : Maybe soon. Don't make it an issue.
S1 : Why not?
S2 : Not every teacher and student agrees.
S1 : I think most students agree. Our opinion is just as important as the opinion of others.
S2 : You may be right.

T : Everyone, be quiet! No more talking! Let's look at Number 2. Whose turn is it to read?
S1 : It's my turn.
T : Min-su, I told you to stop chatting. Please behave your- self.
S2 : I'm sorry.
T : Don't interrupt others. Listen and see if he is reading well.
S1 : Which line should I start to read from?
T : The second line from the bottom.

What does A mean in this context?
I wrote A as the topic of this group of words.
In this group of words, A doesn't belong with the others.

At sometime in our lives, all of us discover the truth of the ancient paradox that by giving freely to others, we gain more for ourselves.

By casting aspersions on the ability and character of others, you reveal the misgivings you have about yourself.

Her unfailing courtesy to others is not a mere adjunct of her personality; it reflects the essential values and standards by which she lives.

I raise my voice in dissent now, and I will always do so whenever I feel that the rights of others are being disregarded.

Instead of being so concerned with the iniquities of others, they would do well to think more of their own state of moral well-being.

Isn't it strange that the ideas which some economists regard as axiomatic are rejected by others as absolutely false!

The rights guaranteed us by the Constitution do not permit you to encroach on the rights of others.

This contract does not preclude my being employed by others at the same time that I am working for you.

We can compress the message of the sermon into one sentence: "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

Some of the most famous classical composers died quite young.
Among these, for example, were Schubert and Mozart, who both died in their thirties.
But not all composers have had short lives.
Bach lived until age 65 and Haydn until age 69.
Still others, like Verdi and Richard Strauss, lived on into their eighties.

The people who live in the city are hurrying out of apartment houses.
Everyone is in a hurry.
Some stop only to drink a quick cup of coffee.
There's no time for breakfast.
Others stop to buy the morning paper.
They read the headlines before they hurry on to the tall building where they work.

I arrived early at the dentist's.
However there were others still earlier than me.
So after registering my name with the receptionist, I sat down on one of the chairs in the waiting room.
There were newspapers and magazines available for reading but somehow I was not interested in them.
Music was played through two loud speakers in the waiting room.
I recognized a couple of songs.

How do birds know when to fly south?
Some people think it's cool weather that tells them to leave.
But other don't believe this is true.
They think the birds start to migrate when the fall days grow shorter.
Some birds migrate only short distances.
Others fly thousands of miles.
And the birds don't get lost at all!

Jack is a good leader.
If you ever had a chance to join any of his group meetings, you would notice right away that he enjoys guiding others.
He always encourages them to participate in what is going on.
When there are decisions to be made, he listens to everyone's opinions and respects their suggestions.
So people cannot but like him very much, The only bad thing I can say about him is that I don't see him often enough.
Jack

Severe weather is a constant possibility all over the globe, but we never really expect our own area to be affected.
However, last night was different.
About ten o'clock, a tornado hit Lucedale.
This violent weather destroyed nine homes near the downtown area.
In addition to these nine houses that were completely destroyed, many others in the area had heavy damage.
Amazingly, no one was injured in last night's terrible storm.
Because of the rapid reaction of state and local weather watchers, most of the area's residents saw the warnings on television.

To some people, success at their jobs requires effort and struggle.
That is, the harder they work, the more successful they will be.
To others, successful career depends on how much money they make.
Still others think that achieving satisfaction and contentment by working at a job they really like is the prime measure of success.
Reaching a desired position in their profession is another standard of success that some people use.
Success at a job, therefore, means different things to different people.

There are some music-sharing Websites such as Napster on the Internet.
So, millions of surfers can upload and download MP3 files for free.
Some say there is nothing wrong with this.
Others strongly criticize the music-sharing Websites.
In my opinion, artists have a right to say they don't want their music to be uploaded to the free music community.
We have to remember that artists make a living from their music.
So we need laws that stop the online operators from providing that service without the artists' permission.

Computer crime has become a big problem of the world that is likely to continue far into the future.
Computer criminals are often quite different from other kinds of criminals.
According to some experts, these criminals seem to lock themselves away from other people and live in their own fantasy “microworlds.”
They are also generally quite young.
They break into others' computers in order to steal, add, or change information.
For many of them, this is a kind of game, a part of their fantasy life.
However, it is a dangerous “game,” and, as a result, many individuals and corporations are very concerned about computer security.

All of the wild Giant Pandas in the world live in western China.
They are found in dense bamboo forests high up in the mountains.
The forests are so dense that it has always been hard for people to find out much about wild pandas.
The pandas stay hidden in the forest most of the time, where people can't even see them.
In many ways, the Giant Panda is still a mysterious animal.
Nobody is really sure what kind of animal they are.
Some scientists say that the Giant Panda is a member of the raccoon family.
But others claim that it belongs to the bear family.
And a third group is sure that it doesn't belong to either family.

Our personal distance allows us to stay protected and untouched by others.
In personal distance, we can touch each other by extending our arms.
At this distance we can see many of the fine details of an individual―the gray hairs, tooth stain, the shape of eyebrows, and so on.
However, it is hard to detect body heat.
At times we may detect the smell of one's breath,
but generally at this distance etiquette demands that we direct our breath to some neutral corner so as not to offend.

When I was studying for my doctorate at the University of Southern California,
I spent every weekend in my study that I had established in our garage.
One Sunday a friend took my family to Disneyland.
They phoned me from there: “Hey, John! I bet you wish you were here with us!”
First, I grumbled at them.
Then I felt sorry for myself, sitting alone in a hot garage while others were having fun.
And then I reminded myself why I was there.
I wanted to be Dr. Anderson.
I enjoyed the thought of myself as Dr. Anderson.
Ignoring the temperature and the phone call, I went back to work.

In business, managers have to be leaders.
Thus, it is no wonder that researchers have been studying the nature of leadership in business.
Some researchers have found that leadership behavior among managers can be divided into two categories.
Whereas some managers are job-centered, others tend to be employee-centered.

The more heartless our community becomes, the less space we seem to have in our hearts for others.
Nearly all the people you happen to meet in life merit your consideration.
Many of them will be there to help you to deliver your pizza, bag your groceries, and make you coffee.
And millions more people, most of whom you will never meet, won't help you, indeed can't help you,
and may not even be able to help themselves.
They also deserve your respect.
If you are not in the habit of being nice to all these people, then get in the habit now.

Most people have great difficulties making their own decisions when they are not sure what to do.
They often let close friends and relatives influence them through opinions.
They even allow gossiping neighbors to express their thoughts for them.
If you are influenced by the opinions of others whenever you reach decisions, you will not succeed in anything you do.
Remember you have a brain and mind of your own.
You should use it and reach your own decisions.

When something doesn't meet our expectations, many of us operate on the assumption,
“When in doubt, it must be someone else's fault.”
You can see this assumption in action almost everywhere you look―the car isn't working properly,
so the mechanic must have repaired it incorrectly;
your expenses exceed your income, so your husband or wife must be spending too much money.
However, blaming others takes an enormous amount of mental energy.
It makes you feel powerless over your own life, because your happiness depends on the behavior of others, which you can't control.

My hometown is famous for its scenic beauty and its flowers.
The lilac fair is especially well known.
In the spring, when the lilacs are at their most beautiful, many people come from all over the country to visit the town and see the fair.
It is wonderful to see families walking together among the lilacs, parents carrying small children on their shoulders, while others run and play around them.
Meanwhile, teenagers dance to the rhythm of the music on their cassette players, and old people sit on park benches, eating their packed meals.
They all feel lucky to be alive and healthy at this time.
It is difficult for them to imagine a better day out.

As you think about writing topics, don't forget your hobbies and talents.
As an expert, you can give your readers the real facts.
Maybe some of your readers will be inspired to try a new hobby themselves.

When we hear about wetlands such as swamps and bogs, we are often reminded of unpleasant experiences:
we get swamped with homework and bogged down in math problems.
This makes it hard to realize the importance of wetlands.
Wetlands are important to many kinds of animals and plants that live there.
Some birds nest in wetlands and others use them for rest stops during flights.
Wetlands are important to people, too.
People visit wetlands to fish, take pictures and just listen to the sounds and enjoy being outdoors.
Wetlands also help us in other ways.
They control flooding by soaking up water like a sponge and then letting it out later on.

Every human being will grow older and die.
Aging in itself is not a disease or a sickness, but as people age, disease often follows and the elderly need others' help.
In addition, the percentage of senior citizens in the world has increased very quickly, and our society is no exception.
The problem for us is that we have left the care of the elderly to their families.
We must change our attitude toward this issue and develop more systematic social programs.
The sooner we realize the importance of the role of government in this matter, the smaller the final cost to society as a whole will be.

Many foreigners are amazed by the Georgians' respect and love for mothers.
In the Georgian language, “motherland” is the word for native country, the capital city is the “mother city,” and the earth is “the mother earth.” Another characteristic of Georgians is their love for their homeland.
Because all Georgians have great love for their country, they don't like to leave it for too long.
They are not interested in the fascinating customs of others.
“Home, sweet home,” is the Georgians' motto.

- Keep your eyes on the ball.
- Hear only the things you should hear―be deaf to others.
- Don't lose your temper. A decision made in anger is never sound.
- Remember, respect for you is created by the decision on the field.
- No matter what your opinion of another one's judgement, never make an opposing comment on him.
- Don't point your finger and yell at a player.

Because of technological advances, now more than ever before, personal privacy is hard to achieve.
For example, if you use a credit card, every charge you make is on a database that police, among others, can check.
If you use an automatic bank teller, the bank records the time, date, and location of your transaction.
Those bank records can be checked by anyone who has your Social Security number.
If you browse the Web, you should also know that many sites record what you looked at and when you were surfing.
Some web sites have been known to share information about who’s been looking at what sites.

The most important lessons can’t be taught.
No one can teach us how to get along with others or how to have self-respect.
As we grow from children into teenagers, no one can teach us how to deal with peer pressure.
As we enter adult life, no one can teach us how to fall in love and get married.
As we enter into new stages in our lives, the advice of adults can be very helpful because they have already had similar experiences.
But experiencing our own triumphs and disasters is really the only way to learn how to deal with life.

Expect the Unexpected!
You should prepare yourself to be tolerant of uncomfortable bus trips and unfamiliar food.
You may encounter people with different concepts about time and personal space.
Be ready to learn about and observe differences.
The differences you observe while abroad will undoubtedly enrich your understanding of your own culture.
Try to learn as much as possible about local customs, beliefs, and language.
Talk to others who have been to your destination and seek opportunities to see movies and read up on the country and culture.

The word “natural” appears in large letters across many cans and boxes of food.
But this word, and others like it, sometimes give shoppers false ideas about the food inside.
Even though laws require that all food labels give truthful information, this does not always happen.
The word “natural” has not been defined by the FDA, the agency in charge of food labels.
So any food maker can use the word on a package.
Even the worst junk food is certain to have something natural in it.
So the makers of these foods can use “natural” on their packages.
Consumers should read labels carefully and write letters of complaint to the FDA
whenever they come across products that are not truly natural.
Everyone in the marketplace can help to make truth in labeling work effectively.

Like animals, people also use different languages.
Each culture has its own words and symbols that are used by people within that culture to communicate with others in the same culture.
For example, a person living in Japan will use the Japanese language to communicate with other Japanese.
Unlike animals though, some cultures use more than one language.
People within these cultures are said to be either bilingual or multilingual.
One such place is Canada.
It is very likely that a person living in Canada may speak both French and English.
Likewise, a person living in Switzerland may speak Italian, German and French.

Some people felt that the city playground was falling apart.
They wanted to make it into a nice, safe place for children to play.
One mother put this note in the newspaper.
“Wanted: People to fix a city playground.
We need people to paint and build, to watch the children, and to make food for the workers.
Call 123-1234 if you can help.”
On the work day, many people came to the playground.
Some painted the swings.
Others built a sandbox, tables, and benches.
People planted bushes and flowers.
When it was all done, everyone was proud of the new playground.

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become.
With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates.
According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban.
These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban,
while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon.
In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center.
However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”

When my grandmother began to have problems in seeing, hearing and walking, a number of family meetings were held.
We discussed what we should do for her.
We talked of placing her in a nursing home, but that idea was quickly given up.
Although my grandmother would be with more people of her own age, she would see even less of her family, and that would break her heart.
Mother would not allow her own mother to grow old and weak in a strange place.
She said, “I will not let Grandmother end up in a nursing home,”
and I admire my mother greatly for this decision.
It was not an easy decision for her.
When so many others are running away from the problem of what they should do about their old parents, my mother stands out remarkably.

Some years ago, Fortune magazine conducted a survey of many of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
The goal was to try to find traits that these successful people had in common.
Surprising to say, there weren't many! Some of these top executives had gone to excellent universities, others not.
Some brought years of experience to their jobs, while others had enjoyed a quicker rise to success.
One of the few things they shared was that, along the way, they had each experienced a major career setback.
Most of them, in fact, had been fired from at least one job.
Understandably, none of them at the time felt they had been treated fairly.
Dwelling on life's unfairness and cruelties will not make your life better.
Those CEOs learned to move beyond setbacks.
We might even conclude that, without confrontation with negative events, they would not be where they are today.

“Boys and girls, playtime is over, get back to work.”
Most of us learned early in life that work and play are separate, and that if you are playing you could not possibly be working.
But to have a livable work environment, a certain amount of playfulness or lightheartedness is required.
An innovative environment demands even more playfulness.
Assuming the matter-of-fact attitude may seem more efficient, but it constricts one's capacity to generate new solutions when needed.
The freedom to be playful expands creative opportunities.
The spirit that allows people to wear a peculiar tie or to laugh out loud without fearing what others think is the same spirit that encourages them to consider new ideas.

It also needs to be mentioned that the author teaches an important moral lesson.
In her fictional world, good almost always triumphs over evil.
In fact, it is the characters who lie, cheat, or hurt others that are routinely punished by the end of the story.
Those who want to ban Rowling's books seem to have missed the point.
They need to read them more carefully.

How do other people's reactions affect you?
In almost all cases, we are affected in some way by how others respond to us.
From the workplace, to home, to school we interact with others.
We respond to them and they to us.
If a little boy likes to play dolls with his sister,
his parents' responses to his play will affect his belief about what is appropriate male behavior.
His future reactions to dolls, even perhaps to real babies, will be affected by the responses of these important others in his life.
Thus, our behavior, our ideas and our emotions are shaped through such interactions with other people.

Recently, there has been a huge increase in the number of people who remain single.
For example, in 2003, about 26 percent of all US households were single-person households.
Similar statistics can be seen in Australia, where one in twelve people lives alone.
Most people who live alone are young adults who postpone marriage into their late twenties, or thirties.
One reason they often give for staying single is that they have not met the right person.
Others say that they prefer the single lifestyle.
As educational and employment opportunities increase, marriage is no longer the only path to economic security and emotional support.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

Asked when they feel satisfied with their life, most people say they feel so when they think they are superior to others.
That's true.
Many feelings of satisfaction or dissatisfaction have their roots in how we compare ourselves to others.
If we spend most of our time thinking only about those who have more, it's no wonder that we feel unhappy.
When we are surrounded by only those who have less, we feel grateful.
Even though we have exactly the same life either way, our feeling about our life can vary tremendously based on who we compare ourselves with.

The rich and unhappy are likely to prize possessions such as a fancy car or an expensive necklace.
