I beg your pardon?
No, the other way around. I beg your pardon!
물론 joke인데 Ford가 말이 잘 안 들려서 I beg your pardon이라고

Our experience of life comes through our five senses.
Each sense gives us specific and useful information about our physical world.
Imagine for a moment that you didn't have the sense of smell.
How much less rich your world would be.
In our traditional work culture we act as if we have only one sense, either visual or auditory.
Most of us are trained to use one of these two senses as our dominant sense, to the exclusion of our other senses.
Learning to use all your senses is a good way to enrich every moment of your life.

Your station has lost me and my family as viewers on Thursday evening.
We were so offended by your new situation comedy show “Hold the Plow” that we will avoid your station from now on.
Since the program was about rural life and we come from that background, we eagerly tuned in the show.
But it was a complete failure!
The program portrayed farmers and rural life in a silly way without ever letting viewers know the true life in the country.
Other viewers who know rural life will undoubtedly share my opinion.

E-commerce, using information technology, is a quickly growing way to do business.
In this approach to business, a company or a person develops a Website on the Internet to sell or buy a product or service.
They advertise their product through links to other sites.
They also develop and use safe ways on the Internet for people to buy things, usually using credit cards.
People anywhere in the world can find the Website and decide if they want to buy the product or service.

Well, as in most work situations, we have a problem here with communication.
That is, most managers do not want to hear people complain, and most employees are afraid to come right out and say what they feel.
They usually won't say what they like or don't like.
They may complain to each other during lunch or after work, but they do not complain directly to the manager.
It is important, however, for a manager to find out if he or she is doing a good job.
One way to do this is to give employees a chance to talk.
Employees need an opportunity to say what is wrong, what they don't like about the work situation, and what they would change to make their work better.

And his mama cries
Because if there's one thing that she doesn't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed

or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way

Sports develop such skills by showing students how to keep fit, how to work in a team, and how to practice self-discipline.

SARS is a serious illness that has recently been reported in Asia, North America, and Europe.
The primary way that SARS appears to spread is by close person-to-person contact.
Most cases of SARS have involved people who cared for or lived with someone with SARS,
or had direct contact with infectious material from a person who has SARS.
Potential ways in which SARS can be spread include touching the skin of other people or objects that are infected and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
It is also possible that SARS is spread more broadly through the air or by other ways that are currently not known.

If people want to be successful in multinational business,
they must understand the cultures of other countries and learn how to adapt to them.
It’s important for them to avoid business decisions that are based on misconceptions―mistaken ideas.
One cause of them is the belief that one’s own culture’s way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures.
To avoid this, it’s necessary to study the elements of culture.

People can now watch a great variety of video tapes at home on the VCR.
Materials available include everything stocked at the local video store and movies or any other programs from the 24-hour selections on television, as well as tapes made at home or borrowed from friends.
Such entertainment in the home is also more affordable than it is in public places.
The greater convenience of watching tapes at any hour and pausing a tape or finishing it at a later time makes entertainment possible for people who have very limited opportunities to go to the movies or watch television.
The VCR also enables family and friends to be together in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying one another’s company and also communicating in a way that is not possible in a movie theater.

The history of fan dates back to the ancient times in Korea.
Murals from ancient tombs show that the ones made of feathers were in use even before the 4th century.
At first, it was just a device to cool with.
But other uses were added as bamboo and paper came into use.
For example, people covered their faces with it to avoid strong sunlight or to hide from their creditors,
and sometimes they even flapped off flies with it.
This device was also used in an artistic way by ancient scholars.
They wrote a poem or painted a picture on it.
In itself, it is just an appliance.
However, a brush stroke on its white canvas creates a transformation and makes it a work of art.

From the workplace, to home, to school we interact with others.
We respond to them and they to us.

his parents' responses to his play will affect his belief about what is appropriate male behavior.
His future reactions to dolls, even perhaps to real babies, will be affected by the responses of these important others in his life.
Thus, our behavior, our ideas and our emotions are shaped through such interactions with other people.

Quality time is time that is well spent.
This term has became more and more frequently used in recent years.
Our busy lives have given us an opportunity to learn that the amount of time we spend is often less important than the way we spend it.
In other words, the quality of the time is more important than the quantity.
People concerned with the quality of the time are also more likely to choose rewarding activities;
they have no reason to kill time.
Those who have not discovered the concept of quality time might miss out on something that makes life worth living.

Do you know that there are about 26,000 suicides in the United States per year?
Especially for someone like me who thinks the greatest loss in the world is loss of human potential,
I want to scream and say, "Hey, wait a minute.
Don't you know that there are other alternatives?"

And do you know that many of those suicides are people who are over the age of 65?
Maybe that tells us a little bit about the way we treat people who are old, and how we feel about them, and how we're a society that detests anything old.
We don't want it around.
We tear it down.
We send it away so we don't have to look at it, instead of bringing it in and realizing that old can be beautiful.

The question which comes first―society or the individual―is like the question about the hen and the egg.
Whether you treat it as a logical or a historical question, you can make no statement about it, one way or the other, which does not have to be corrected by an opposite, and equally one-sided, statement.
Society and the individual are inseparable; they are necessary and complementary to each other, not opposites.

Software piracy is already the biggest barrier to U.S. software companies entering foreign markets.
One reason is that software is extremely easy and inexpensive to duplicate compared to the cost of developing and marketing the software.
The actual cost of duplicating a software program, which may have a retail value of $400 or more, can be as little as a dollar or two―the main component being the cost of the diskette.
The cost of counterfeiting software is substantially less than the cost of duplicating watches, books, or blue jeans.
Given that the difference between the true value of the original and the cost of the counterfeit is so great for software, international piracy has become big business.
Unfortunately, many foreign governments view software piracy as an industry in and of itself and look the other way.

Every language is the outgrowth of the way a particular group of people live.
Every language contains word symbols for ideas its users need to express.
It does not, however, contain words for unfamiliar ideas, ideas that have no meaning in that culture.
For example, English contains only a limited number of words for ideas related to a camel.
Camels are just not important to English culture.
To Arabs, on the other hand, camels are important.

They are so important that Arabic contains numerous words for the camel and the equipment that is used with it.

I think the greatest satisfaction one gets is derived from the opinion that people have about you―people who have been around you your whole life―as to your character and your compassion and your fairness, and the way you deal with people, and the way you do your job and whether you have tried to sacrifice other people for your personal benefit.

Mr. Ballantine rolled to one side, and had just closed his eyes when the window crashed.
He bolted to the door, turned on the bedroom light, and yelled, "Get up, Wanda! Get up!" Wanda was reaching for her robe, and he was grabbing the shotgun from the closet.

"I know the number!"

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

Wool is one of the oldest kinds of material used for clothing.
We do not know exactly when people started to use wool to make clothing.
However, we do know that people were wearing wool clothes very early in man's history.
People used the wool not only from sheep, but also from other animals.
For example, in the desert they used the wool from camels.
In the mountains of India they used the wool from cashmere goats.
And in mountains of South America, they used the wool from the llama.
All these kinds of wool have one thing in common.
They protect the body from outside changes in temperature.
This way, wool keeps the body cool in summer and warm in winter.

Lufkin's solution has been to use earthworms to purify waste in the city's sewage treatment plant.
The worms eat the waste and turn it into clean fertilizer―which the city then sells to farmers.
Not only can the city make a profit from its waste, but this system costs far less than any other.

The consensus in my field is that this whole matter is now emerging into public consciousness.
We humans are realizing how much we manipulate each other and consequently we're reevaluating our motivations.

I think this reevaluation will be part of the new world view.

Reading is not only a supplement to experience. Good reading is experience itself.
The author who can write with power and insight and truth can make his perceptions
a part of your awareness of the world around you. Thus the person who deprives himself
of the wisdom and understanding of great writers deprives himself of an invaluable
experience that can be gained in no other way.

As long as the term "art" is applied to a realm so vast and indefinite as to embrace
literature, music and dance, theater and film, the visual and decorative arts, and other
equally diverse activities, their classification - the way in chich each is regarded as

"Why should I study English?" objected a rebellious youth. "I know English I am
English."
But not everyone who is studying English really knows English, nor is knowing all
of the same kind. A professional ball player may know how to pitch a curve. A physicist
may know the same thing, but he will know it in quite a different way. His way of knowing
will be better, if he spent as much time in practice as the professional player, in all
likelihood he could pitch a better curve. In other words, analytic knowledge is an aid
and support to experimental knowledge.

Although the aim of a is the acquisition of information, the information
must of course be reliable. Hence there is a necessity in the sciences
for a systematized way of amassing knowledge. It is this systematization
that marks the essential difference between a science and any other
discipline.

When I first read the bood, I accepted its ideas only tentatively; but since
then they have become so entrenched in my philosophy that I can no longer
think any other way.

Everybody in the world is seeking happiness―and there is one sure way
to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't
depend on outer conditions. It depends on inner conditions.
It isn't what you have or what you are or where you are or what you are
doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
For example, two people may be in the same place, doing the same thing;
both may have about an equal amount of money and prestige―and yet one
may be miserable and the other happy. Why? Because of a different mental
attitude. I saw just as many happy faces among the Chinese coolies
sweating and toiling in the devastating heat of China for seven cents
a day as I see on Park Avenue.
"Nothing is good or bad," said Shakespeare, "but thinking makes it so."
Abe Lincoln once remarked, "Most folks are about as happy as they make
up their minds to be."

Health is generally regarded as a private property. There have indeed been
slogans which have emphasized this, often inaccurately. It is not true, as
sometimes claimed, that "health is wealth." There are many healthy people
who are not wealthy and also the other way around.
Another slogan is to the effect that life is not worth living without good
health. Certainly it is true that good health contributes greatly to the
joy of living and should be preserved and cherished. At the same time there
are many handicapped persons who have been able to make a good life for
themselves and to set a notable example to their fellow human beings by
the courageous way in which they have faced and conquered disability,
disease, and suffering. Obviously it is foolish to sacrifice health
needlessly. It is just as unwise to lie down and give up when your health
is impaired.

Imagine two basketball teams, each composed of half of five pairs of
identical twins. But one team has the institution of authority and the
other does not.
The one with authority simply has the custom that if one of the members
wears a red arm band, the others will obey his instructions; not because
he is stronger, or smarter, or older, or a better player, just because
he wears the arm band. The other team has no way of selecting a leader.
Clearly the first team will have a much greater chance of beating the
second team.

In an effort to decrease the amount of woodland being harvested for the

Business in Asia rush to meet express company deadlines.
Shouldn't it be the other way around?
Most express companies base their pick-up deadlines on commercial airline schedules.
So it's no wonder business feel they're in a constant race against the clock.

Today let me tell you about an experience I had on the bus. The bus was
full and I was standing near the door. As people got on, they stepped on
each other's feet and pushed one another in the back. I realized that the
riders didn't like it, but they understood that's the way it is. In my
country, when getting on a bus, people will apologize if they touch a
person at all. Where I come from, everyone worries about individual space
no matter where they are.
▶ Push another one in the push
He hit me on the head. = He hit my head
He pulled me by the hand. = He pulled my hand.

Suppose two friends of mine are sitting in my room. One is 165cm tall and
the other is 175cm tall. Which do you think is a man and which is a
woman? In the absence of other information, you probably conclude that
the shorter one is a woman while the taller one is a man. Where does this
conclusion come from? Your experience tells you that men tend to be
taller than women. So, From the particular men and women you have known,
you draw a conclusion about men and women as a whole. In this way, many
of your day-to-day judgments and guesses depend on your experience.

I Don't Wanna Cry ( Mariah Carey ) :
Once again we sit in slience
After all is said and done
Only emptiness inside us
Baby,look what we've become
We can make a million promises but we still won't change
It isn't right to stay together when we only bring
each other pain
I don't wanna cry
Don't wanna cry
Nothing in the world could take us back
where we used to be
Though I've given you my heart and soul
I must find a way of letting go
'Cause baby, I don't wanna cry
Too far apart to bridge the distance
But something keeps us hanging on and on
Pretending not to know the difference
denying what we had is gone
Every moment we're together is just breaking me down
But it hurts too much to stay around

Tom's diner
Suzanne Vega
I am sitting in the morning
At the diner on the corner
I am waiting at the counter
For the man to pour the coffee
And he fills it only halfway
And before I even argue
He is looking out the window
at somebody coming in
-
"It is always nice to see you"
Says the man behind the counter
To the woman who has come in
she is shaking her umbrella
And I look the other way
As they are kissing their hellos
And I'm pretending not to see them
And instead I pour the milk

And so I raise my head

There's a woman on the outside looking inside
Does she see me
No she does not really see me
'Cause she sees her own reflection
And I'm trying not to notice
That she's hitching up her skirt
And while she's straightening her stockings
Her hair is getting wet
