- 그녀는 선생에게 조금만 칭찬을 들으면 금방 수줍어한다.

(3) 자신의 무지를 인정하는 것은 현명해지기 위한 첫 단계라고 소크라테스는 말했다.
→ 「소크라테스는 말했다」 Socrates said로 되어도 다음 that-절 내에서 현재형을 쓴다는 것을 잊지 말자.

4. 처음으로 미국에 가는 사람들이 과연 자기가 하는 영어를 알아듣게 할 수 있을지 에 관해 불안해하는 것도 당연하다.
→ 「처음으로 미국에 가는 사람이, …에 관해 불안해 하는 것도 당연하다」It is (only) natural that those who go to United States for the first time should feel uneasy. 여기서는, that 이하가 주어절이기 때문에 그것을 문두로 내놓아도 되는데, 주어가 길어지니까 문두에 가주어 It을 두고, that 이하를 뒤로 돌리는 구문이 많다. 다음의 예에서는 가주어로 시작하는 것이 일반적이다. Should가 that절에 들어가는 이유는 전에 소개했는데, 다시 말하면, 제안. 요망. 명령 등의 표현에 동반하는 절 안에서는 should가 쓰인다. 이때 미국식 영어는 should를 생략하여 동사 원형을 쓰는 경우가 많다.
→ 「너는 내가 하는 말을 안 믿는다니 유감스럽다」 → That you don't believe me is a great pity. = It is a great pity that you don't believe me.
위의 예처럼, natural을 비롯해서, necessary, important, essential, strange가 들어가는 경우 that 이하의 절은 for + 목적어 + to부정사로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. ex) It is (only) natural for those who go to the United States for the first time to fell uneasy.
(ANS) It is (only) natural that those who go to the United States for the first time should fell uneasy (or anxious) about whether they can make themselves understood in English.
6. 처음 런던에 가신다면, 누군가의 안내를 받는 것이 좋을 겁니다. 그러는 편이 시간과 노력을 많이 덜게 될테니까요.
→ 「누군가의 안내를 받다」는「누군가에게 안내하도록 부탁하다」로 보고 have+사람+ 원형동사 구문으로 한다.
→ 「그러는 것이 ~을 덜게된다」는 그 앞의 내용을 it로 받아서 Then it will save~의 구문이 자연스럽다.「처음」은 for the first time.

mankind는 과거, 현재, 미래에 걸쳐 이 지구상에 살아왔고 살아나갈 인간을 집합적으로 가리킨다.

man은 「사람」을 총칭적으로 나타내며 과학논문 등에서도 쓰이긴 하지만 (style상으로 본다면) 상대적으로 less formal style에 속한다.

humankind는 인류의 숭고한 면만을 강조한 humanity와 달리 인류의 바람직하지 않은 특성에 관해서 언급할 때도 쓰인다. men은 사람의 총칭을 나타내는 man과는 달리 과학논문 등 학술용어로는 쓰이지 않는다. mankind 등이 인간을 하나의 단일체로 파악하고 있다면, men은 인간을 여러 인간의 집합체로 파악하고 있어 다음과 같은 문맥에서 편리하게 쓰일 수 있다.

remember는 가장 일상적인 낱말로 과거의 일이 노력하는 일없이 마음에 떠오르는 경우에도 쓰이고, 과거의 일을 상기하려는 의지가 발동되어 있는 경우에도 쓰인다. recall은 remember보다 formal style에서 쓰이며 상기하려는 의지·노력이 수반되는 경우에 쓰인다. 또한 recollect는 remember, recall…의 뜻을 갖는 이외에 흔히 기억이 불완전한 과거의 여러 가지 일들을 마음의 여유를 가지고 회상하고 연결시키는 심리작용을 가리킨다.

number는 일반적인 말이며 계산에 사용되는 또는 총수를 나타내는 말을 가리킬 수도 있고, 기호를 가리킬 수도 있다.

number에는 cardinal number(기수)와 ordinal number(서수)의 구별이 있다. ten 또는 10, thirty-three 또는 33은 전자이며, first 또는 1st는 후자이다.
numeral은 적용 범위가 한층 좁고 기호로 표시될 수 있는 기수만을 가리킨다. 그러므로 수치보다는 기호를 더 강조한다.
ex) Roman numerals/ Arabic numerals/ a license plate bearing both letters and numerals
figure는 수치를 표시하는 기호에 적용되고, 보통 아라비아 숫자의 사용을 암시한다. number는 figure로 표시될 수 있고, number로 표시된 총수·가격은 figure라고 부를 수 있다.

digit는 1에서 9까지의 정수이기만 하면, 어느 것이나 digit라고 할 수 있고, 특히 0, 1, 2, 3…9(때로 0을 제외하기도 한다)의 아라비아 숫자를 가리킨다. 손가락이 이 말의 어원적인 뜻으로, 본래 손가락을 꼽아서 수를 세었던 일에서 유래한다.

행동·진행을 훼방하는 것, 「장애(물)」「방해(물)」을 의미하는 말들이며, obstacle은 글자대로 또는 비유적으로, 가는 길에 놓여 있어서 장애가 되는 것·유형물도 무형물도 될 수 있다.
ex) The great obstacle to progress is prejudice./ A roadblock was the first obstacle to the tank column's advance.
obstruction은 통로를 어느 정도 닫아 막아서 진행·활동을 막는 것을 말한다.
ex) A blood clot is an obstruction to the circulation.(응혈은 혈액순환의 장애물이다.)
