They took it for granted that I would attend the reception.

ANS 2) It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.

The F.B.I. now contracts out some security checks on its own
employees, but the number is small, the bureau uses its own retired
agents and it maintains tight control over the outside work. The
economies promised under the Gore plan, presented as one of its main
selling points, are not certain. The government predicts a five-year
saving of $20 million. While the plan does shrink the Federal payroll
by 700 people and their benefit packages, the government will still
handle some of the work, creating the potential for duplication. The
initial contract is a three-year, sole-source, non-competitive agreement
with a work force that is experienced but untested in the private sector.

The government should enforce provisions governing early exemptions and the
physical examinations required for military service. Over the past 20 years,
provisions for physical examinations have changed 11 times.
It is clearly the responsibility of the Ministry of National Defence that the
absurdity surrounding the examinations does not reoccur.

Evidence that eating chocolate does not cause *acne comes from two studies:
one at the Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the other by the U.S. Naval Academy.
Their research showed some interesting results.
They found that there was no difference in the skin condition between the people who ate chocolate and those who did not eat chocolate.
There is also no proof that chocolate is the cause of tooth decay.
In fact, it is believed that the cocoa butter in chocolate forms a coating over teeth that may help to protect them.

We must understand that the dream or vision will always be beyond the accomplishment.
This painful separation of what we wish to be and what we are will remain as long as we are human.
For, as accomplishment approaches vision, it is natural for man to extend and broaden the vision.
This painful separation of dream and accomplishment does not discourage man.
Rather, he is encouraged by the strain created by this separation, which is probably the chief cause of all growth.

What is wrong with this view? It is certain that technology has an important effect on our lives.
But to suggest that it determines how we live can easily be shown to be wrong.
If you are given a computer, you can send harmful messages to other people, but you don't have to.
How you act will depend on the social circumstances in which you find yourself.
Technology enables us to do things but it does not force us to.
Its influence on society depends on the social circumstances in which it is made available.

The pollution of sea, air, and land harms our quality of life by affecting our health.
More serious is the possibility of the end of human life itself.
We may become so developed that we kill ourselves!
Therefore, the most recent definition of development emphasizes sustainable development:
the improvement of human quality of life within the limits of a green, healthy earth.
In other words, it is development which aims to protect, not destroy, the earth's resources.
This will make sure that our present lifestyle does not harm future generations' lifestyles.
They will also be able to get fruits from the earth.

Imagine your brain as a house filled with lights.
Now imagine someone turning off the lights one by one.
That's what Alzheimer’s disease does.
It turns off the lights, so that the flow of ideas, emotions and memories from one room to the next slows and eventually ceases.
And sadly, as anyone who has ever watched a parent or a spouse yielding to the spreading darkness knows,
there is no way to stop the lights from going off, no way to switch them back on once they've grown dim.

The word “natural” appears in large letters across many cans and boxes of food.
But this word, and others like it, sometimes give shoppers false ideas about the food inside.
Even though laws require that all food labels give truthful information, this does not always happen.
The word “natural” has not been defined by the FDA, the agency in charge of food labels.
So any food maker can use the word on a package.
Even the worst junk food is certain to have something natural in it.
So the makers of these foods can use “natural” on their packages.
Consumers should read labels carefully and write letters of complaint to the FDA
whenever they come across products that are not truly natural.
Everyone in the marketplace can help to make truth in labeling work effectively.

Most weeds are harmful, unwanted plants.
But a Danish biotech company has adapted one plant to help save lives.
Scientists in Copenhagen have genetically modified the plant
so that it changes from its normal green color to red when its roots touch nitrogen dioxide, a gas that leaks out of buried land mines and unexploded weapons.
Many of these explosives can remain active for over 50 years, emitting nitrogen dioxide all the while.
Getting rid of the mines from the ground is tedious, painstaking work.
But the color-changing plant, expected to be used regularly within two years, does present a cost-effective alternative to the most common detection methods currently available ― humans with metal detectors and mine-sniffing dogs.

A strong, healthy body can do an amazing job of resisting disease.
There are many things you can do to keep your body healthy, such as eating proper foods.
Getting plenty of sleep is another good habit.
A tired, run-down body is like a car that needs a tune-up; it does not function efficiently.
Exercise is important in reducing stress and keeping the body healthy.
Regular, moderate exercise will relieve muscle tension, keep the muscles firm, and make the heart and blood vessels healthy.
Exercise, like sleep, makes the body function more efficiently.
People who exercise regularly can even strengthen their hearts.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

To live with ideal is a successful life.

It is not what one does, but what one tries to do, that makes a man strong.

The teacher's personality should be pleasantly live and attractive.
This does not rule out people who are physically plain, or even ugly, because many such have great personal charm.
But it does rule out such types as the over-excitable, melancholy, frigid, cynical, and over-bearing.
I would say too, that it excludes all of dull or purely negative personality.
School children probably 'suffer more from bores than from brutes.'

Reading a book is a kind of conversation.
You may think that it is not, because the author does all of the talking, and you have nothing to say; but if you think that, you do not realize your duty as a reader―and you are not using your opportunities.
Actually, the reader is the one who has the last word.
The author has said what he wanted to say, and then it is the reader's turn.
The conversation, however, should be an orderly one, with first one talking and then the other.

Conversely, when animals vocally imitate human utterances, it does not mean they possess language.
Language is a system that relates sounds (or gestures) to meanings.

The question which comes first―society or the individual―is like the question about the hen and the egg.
Whether you treat it as a logical or a historical question, you can make no statement about it, one way or the other, which does not have to be corrected by an opposite, and equally one-sided, statement.
Society and the individual are inseparable; they are necessary and complementary to each other, not opposites.
'No man is an island, entire of itself,' in Donne's famous words: 'every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.'
That is an aspect of the truth.

Every language is the outgrowth of the way a particular group of people live.
Every language contains word symbols for ideas its users need to express.
It does not, however, contain words for unfamiliar ideas, ideas that have no meaning in that culture.
For example, English contains only a limited number of words for ideas related to a camel.
Camels are just not important to English culture.
To Arabs, on the other hand, camels are important.
They are so important that Arabic contains numerous words for the camel and the equipment that is used with it.

Stocks are not as safe as money in the bank or bonds.
Buying stocks is risky because the investor does not know if the company will succeed or fail.
If a company succeeds, it earns more money.
The money that the company earns for itself is called a profit, and the stockholder also earns some profit.
If the company fails and loses money, the stockholder loses money, too.

Americans see much of life as a race for success.
For them, equality means that everyone should have equal chance to enter the race and win.
In other words, equality of opportunity may be thought of as an ethical rule.
It helps ensure that the race for success is a fair one and that a person does not win just because he or she was born into a wealthy family.
President Abraham Lincoln expressed this belief in the 1860s when he said, "We wish to allow the humblest man an equal chance to get rich with everybody else.
When one starts poor, as most do in the race of life, a free society is such that he knows he can better his condition: he knows that there is no fixed condition of labor for his whole life."

I have been called every name in the book after telling a patient that the doctor did not call in his or her prescription and I can't do anything until he does.
When the customer is out of refills and I try to explain that I must speak with the doctor before refilling the prescription, I get responses like "Is that so? Well, it will be your fault if I get pregnant!"

How many times have you made a mad dash across your yard, your house, or your workplace to catch the telephone?
Who owns that telephone?
Maybe in the workplace that mad dash is necessary, but at home the telephone belongs to you.
If you don't want to answer it, let it ring.
The world won't come to an end.
If the call is really that urgent, the other person will call back.
You own your telephone.
It does not own you.

The fact is that the less developed countries(LDCs) should not have to be producing primarily for developed country markets.
In the first place, they could trade more with each other, and be less dependent on developed countries for trade.
The LDCs have within themselves all that is required for growth.
They have surpluses of fuel and of the principal minerals.
They have enough land to feed themselves, if they cultivate it properly.
They are capable of learning the skills of manufacturing, and of saving the capital required for modernization.
Their development does not in the long run depend on the existence of the developed countries, and their potential for growth would be unaffected even if all the developed countries were to sink under the sea.

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

I have fancied myself that people who rise early are slightly self-righteous.
They can't help feeling a little scornful of us sluggards.
And we know it.
Humility is the badge of all our tribe.
We are not proud of lying in bed.
We are ashamed―and happy.
The noblest sluggard of us all has stated our case for us.
"I have all my life been lying till noon; yet I tell all young men, and tell them with great sincerity, that nobody who does not rise early ever do any good."

Under no circumstances should you give your 16-year-old daughter permission to smoke.
Explain in detail WHY smoking is dangerous to her health, not to mention what it does to her breath, teeth and clothes.
If she ignores your counsel, continues to smoke and 25 years from now develops terminal lung cancer, you will at least know that you didn't give her your blessing to kill herself.

I went to public school, and because of my total lack of interest and non-attendance I was asked to leave.
I didn't want to go there in the first place.
I was taken away from all my friends.
My father must have been very pleased to get me into the school, but in the end it was a complete waste of money.
I let him down quite badly, I suppose.
I tried several jobs but I couldn't settle down in them.
They just weren't challenging enough.
Then I realized that what I really wanted to do was live in the country and look after animals, so that's what I now do.
As a family, we're not that close, either emotionally or geographically.
We don't see much of each other these days.
My father and I are totally different, like chalk and cheese.
My interests have always been the country, but his are books, music and above all, opera, which I hate.
If he does come to see me, he's in completely the wrong clothes for the country ― fur coats, nice little leather shoes, not exactly ideal for long walks across the fields.

America's "Marxophobia" must be the single greatest obstacle to its efforts to
promote democracy around the world. Washington's reluctance to give aid to
Nicaragua will probably send that country right into the arms of the Soviets.
America must stop getting jittery at the mere mention of socialism. It should also cast
a wary eye on some of the governments it does back, such as Argentina and Chile.
Dictatorships cannot be the friends and allies of a country that professes the highest
regard for democracy and human rights. The United States must be understanding
toward democratic experiments like that in Nicaragua.

I have no patience with the college graduate who whines that his diploma doesn't
help him get ahead in business. And less patience with the college graduate who tries
to prove that it does.

Nor do I deny that money, up to a certain point, is very capable of
increasing happiness; beyond that point, I do not think it does so.

A certain historian has said of history that "it devours the present." I do not quite
understand what he means, but in science it is surely the other way about: the present
devours the past. This does something to extenuate a scientist's misguided
indifference to the history of ideas.

Eisenhower's major virtue, which appeared less important in 1962 than it does
now, was a sense of proportion; he had an instinctive knowledge of what could be
done and, more important, what could not be done. As far back as 1951, for example,
when the French were fighting in Viet Nam, he forsaw nothing but swamps. "I'm
convinced that no military victory is possible in that kind of theater," he noted. In
1955 members of his Cabinet predicted imminent war with Red China in the Formosa
Strait. Ike knew better: "I have so often been through these periods of strain
that I have become accustomed to the fact that most of the calamities that we
anticipate really never occur."
* a sense of proportion:

Some writers who do not think clearly are inclined to suppose that their
thoughts have a significance greater than at first appears. It is
flattering to believe that they are too profound to be expressed so
clearly that all who run may read, and very naturally it does not
occur to such writers that the fault is with their own minds, which
have not the faculty of precise reflection. It is very easy to persuade
oneself that a phrase that one does not quite understand may mean a
great deal more than one realizes. Fools can always be found to discover
a hidden sense in them.

One of the symptoms of approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that
one's work is terribly important and that to take a holiday would bring
all kinds of disaster. If I were a medical man, I would prescribe a
holiday to any patient who considered his work important. The nervous
breakdown which appears to be produced by the work is, in fact, in
every case that I have ever known of personally, produced by some
emotional trouble from which the patient attempts to escape by means
of his work. He is loath to give up his work because, if he does so,
he will no longer have anything to distract him from the thoughts of
his misfortune, whatever it may be.

A new executive went to his first high-level meeting. At the end of the
conference table sat a fellow who, whenever a tough problem came up,
would say something like, "Well, it never rains, but it pours." or
"It's a long road that has no turning." or "If life gives you lemons,
then make lemonade."
"Exactly what does that guy do?" the new exec asked a colleague after
the meeting.
"He gives us our spirit of unity." was the reply. "We'd all like to
strangle him."

*see to it 유의하다 take care:

See to it that pleasure does not interfere with business.

Three boys were bragging about their fathers. One said, "My dad's so fast
he can shoot an arrow and get to the target before the arrow does."
"That's nothing," the second boy replied. "My dad's so fast he can shoot
a deer at 500 yards and get to the deer before it falls."
"Big deal!" the third said. "My dad works for the government and gets off
work at 4:30, but he's so fast he gets home by 3:45."

The weather is like the government, always in the wrong.
In summer time we say it is stifling; in winter that it is killing;
in spring and autumn we find fault with it for being neither one thing
nor the other, and wish it would make up its mind.
If it is fine, we say the country is being ruined for want of rain;
if it does rain, we pray for fine weather.
If December passes without snow, we indignantly demand to know what
has become of our good old-fashioned winters, and talk as if we had
been cheated out of something we had bought and paid for; and when
it does snow, our language is a disgrace to a Christian nation.
We shall never be content until each man makes his own weather,
and keeps it to himself.

Sometimes slowness and depth of response are intimately connected.
Time is required in order to digest impressions, and translate them into
substantial ideas. The 'slow but sure' person, whether man or child, is
one in whom impressions sink and accumulate, so that thinking is done at
a deeper level of value than by those with a lighter load.
Many a child is rebuked for slowness, for not answering promptly, when
his forces are taking time to gather themselves together to deal
effectively with the problem at hand. In such cases, failure to afford
time and leisure encourages, if it does not actually create, habits of
speedy, but snapshot and superficial, judgment.

The processes of creative activity display several striking features.
One of the most frequent is the occurrence of flashes of insight outside
the hours of regular work, during periods of physical activity or at odd
moments of relaxation. So familiar is this phenomenon that many have
taken advantage of it.
Haydn, the great musician, says, "When my work does not advance, I
retire into the chapel and say a prayer; immediately ideas come to me."
Many, like Hamilton, have found that walking encourages the appearance
of ideas.
Many persons devoted to creative work have carried scraps of paper with
them everywhere so that nothing of the precious flashes of revelation
may be lost.

I have frequently experienced myself the mood in which I felt that all
is vanity; I have emerged from it not by means of any philosophy, but
owing to some imperative necessity of action. If your child is ill, you
may be unhappy, but you will not feel that all is vanity; you will feel
that the restoring of the child to health is a matter to be attended to
regardless of the question whether there is ultimate value in human
life or not. A rich man may, and often does, feel that all is vanity,
but if he should happen to lose his money, he would feel that his next
meal was by no means vanity.

The root of the trouble springs from too much emphasis upon competitive
success as the main source of happiness. I do not deny that the feeling
of success makes it easier to enjoy life.
A painter, let us say, who has been obscure throughout his youth, is
likely to become happier if his talent wins recognition. Nor do I deny
that money, up to a certain point, is very capable of increasing
happiness; beyond that point, I do not think it does so. What I do
maintain is that success can only be one ingredient in happiness, and
is too dearly purchased if all the other ingredients have been
sacrificed to obtain it.

A man who travels to foreign countries will see more than a man who stays
at home, but it does not follow that he will be able to talk in an
interesting way about what he has seen, nor that he will be any wiser
than the man who stays at home.

To comprehend a man's life it is necessary to know not merely what he does,
but also what he purposely leaves undone. There is a limit to the work that
can be gotten out of a human body or a human brain, and he is a wise man
who wastes no energy on pursuits for which he is not fitted; and he is
still wiser who, from among the things that he can do well, chooses and
resolutely follows the best.

In no other town than London is it so important, nay, essential, to have
good friends because practically everything that constitutes the charm
of London life takes place behind closed doors, either of clubs or private
houses; nowhere does social life count for so little. The Englishman is
unwilling to exhibit himself in public and still more so to mix with a
crowd of strangers.
The function of the London street is simply to contain the traffic,
which is dense that its stream sweeps the individual along with it.

Many observers have commented on what seems to be the fact that fear plays
a much smaller part than we should think it must in the life of an animal
which lives dangerously.
Terror he can know, and perhaps he knows it frequently.
But it seems to last only a little longer than the immediate danger it
helps him to avoid, instead of lingering, as in the human being it does,
until it becomes a burden and a threat.
The frightened bird resumes his song as soon as danger has passed, and
so does the frightened rabbit his games.
It is almost as if he knew that "cowards die many times before their
deaths: the valiant never taste of death but once."

Working in a print shop, my co-worker and I sometimes forget how complex
the equipment seems to clients. She explained to one woman how to use
a copier that could enlarge, reduce, collate, change paper size and
adjust the lightness or darkness of copies.
"It's really so simple," my colleague concluded.
"All you have to do is tell it what you want, and it does it."
The client's anxiety vanished. Leaning close to the machine, she
commanded, "Copy both sides, please!"

The examination in structure was also the standard University of
Michigan examination and his score, 97, indicates that he "has a
sufficient grasp of grammatical structure to allow (him) to work in an
environment where English is the medium of communication.
(His) ability is comparable to that of native speakers
with high school educations. It should be remembered, however, that
this is a paper ability and does not necessarily mean that it is

Unfortunately, from the standpoint of our company, the content is
not really suited to our sphere of activity in that it is neither
business nor interculturally oriented. Our publisher felt that the
coverage was also not detailed enough to command much interest from the
high school or university education system here. Therefore, though the
tapes are not without merit, it does not appear that we can be of any
direct help.

My staff and I have studied your materials very carefully and have
reached the conclusion that, although your program is quite impressive,
it does not meet our present needs or requirements. Consequently, we do
not feel that it would serve any purpose to meet with you during your
stay in Korea.

We eat many foods in order to live and grow. We eat grains, vegetables,
fruits, nuts, meat, and fish. We are so accustomed to a varied diet that
we usually take it for granted that other people also have a variety of
foods. Many things determine what foods people eat. Climate plays a part.
So does soil. In addition, there are many other factors which play their
part, such as the amount of money and crop land available.

As men and beasts get used to each other, kindness and understanding may
slowly develop on one side, trust on the other. Both sides would gain by
it. "After all," says a zoo director, "the zoological garden is the only
piece of 'wilderness' that most people will ever see ; while it does much
to protect the animals, it performs a valuable service for humanity
itself."

The young should learn that no one can win all the time and that it's
possible to enjoy a game even when they don't win. A child who doesn't
make the baseball team feels terrible. But parents should not offer a
quick prize or say. "It doesn't matter," because it does. The youngster
should be allowed to experience disappointment.

It is perfectly normal not to feel good. This does not mean that it is
normal to feel rotten all the time, or even to feel bad too often. "All
things in moderation." said the Greeks, and that is the rule for feeling
good and bad. A person who feels bad with reasonable regularity will
enjoy the occasional period of feeling good far more than somebody who
feels good so often that he is bored by it.

lling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again
***
The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand-new start
But little does she know
That when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart
-
Rain, please tell me now
Does that seem fair for her to steal my heart away
When she don't care
I can't love another
When my heart's somewhere far away
*** repeat
Rain, Won't you tell her that I love her so
Please ask the sun to see her heart aglow
Rain, in her heart
And let the love we knew start to grow
** repeat
**
