텔로미어란 신발 끈의 흐트러짐을 막아주는 캡처럼 염색체 말단 부위에서 염색체가 약화되거나 주변 염색체와 융합되는 것을 방지하는 기능을 담당하는 염기서열이다.
Telomere is a nucleotide sequence responsible for preventing chromosomes from being weakened or fused with surrounding chromosomes at the end of chromosomes, like a cap that prevents tangling of shoelaces.
반면 암세포에 주로 있는 텔로머라제 효소는 무제한 발현되면서 텔로미어 길이가 짧아지지 않아 암세포가 죽지 않는다.
