A fundamental change is happening in entertainment around the world.
People are relying more and more on their televisions and CD players for their entertainment.
The problem is that people want to choose what they do and when and where they do it.
This makes home-based entertainment more attractive than live performances.
The biggest theaters located in large cities find they have to focus on glamorous productions with top stars to attract the crowds.
Meanwhile, many small and medium-sized arts organizations face growing financial pressures.

Severe weather is a constant possibility all over the globe, but we never really expect our own area to be affected.
However, last night was different.
About ten o'clock, a tornado hit Lucedale.
This violent weather destroyed nine homes near the downtown area.
In addition to these nine houses that were completely destroyed, many others in the area had heavy damage.
Amazingly, no one was injured in last night's terrible storm.
Because of the rapid reaction of state and local weather watchers, most of the area's residents saw the warnings on television.

Jeff Lim, 66, a retailer from La Union province, northwest of Manila, has had trouble falling asleep for more than ten years.

When I was growing up, television wasn't encouraged ― but I was permitted to watch return of “I love Lucy.”
And did I ever love her!
When I was six, I asked my father, a minister in San Diego, to arrange a meeting with my idol.
He tried reasoning with me, but I didn't listen.
Papa paused, looked me straight in the eye and said, “I want you to be real.”
Over the years Papa's words became increasingly important to me.
Being ‘real' meant knowing who I was, being true to myself, and standing up for my beliefs.

그러나 나는 “I love Lucy.”

In the United States, the arrival of spring is marked for most urban dwellers not by a sudden greenness
―there is little green in Manhattan―but by the opening of the baseball season.
The first ball is thrown by the President and thereafter millions of citizens enjoy the baseball season.
Similarly, the end of summer is distinguished as much by the World Series as by any natural symbol.
Even those who ignore sports cannot help being aware of these large and pleasantly predictable events.
Radio and television carry baseball into every home.
Newspapers are filled with sports news.

Susie remembers the day when she was on the stage as a professional singer for the first time.
It was long after she had been discovered at a singing contest.
Despite her late debut, Susie is now popular among many Asians.
Thanks to the success of her debut album, My love, released two years ago, and recent television roles in Japan, she no longer feels unsure of her abilities.
She says, “I would give myself only 20 points for singing when I first started out. Now, after practicing in the recording studio every day, I give myself 90 points.”

Mr. and Mrs. Howell are a middle-aged couple.
Mr. Howell owns a corner grocery store.
Mrs. Howell is a housewife.
Mr. Howell works hard every day, so at the end of the day, he is often very tired.
He always likes to watch television in the evenings.
He never wants to go out at night, so Mrs. Howell sometimes complains to him.
She usually likes to go out to dinner.
After all, she is generally at home alone during the day, so she seldom enjoys staying at home in the evenings.
This causes a family problem, and the Howells occasionally spend the evening arguing.

The amount of money that marketers spend to advertise their products on television depends on two factors: the time the ad appears and the estimated number of people who will watch that program.
For example, advertisements shown on Monday through Friday during the day cost less than those that appear in prime-time.
Prime-time ads are more expensive because the audience for the ads is larger.
In addition to the time of the ad, the popularity of the television program makes a difference in the cost.

It is obvious that TV is addictive:
Even babies will sit for hours fascinated by the movement and changing colors.
From childhood onwards, when the sounds and pictures have meaning, it is a great temptation to just sit in front of the television.
A ‘good' program holds us because it is interesting; a 'bad' one often keeps us watching because we hope that it will improve or that a ‘better' one will follow.
Two great dangers of this unselective viewing are the way in which our senses of good and bad, right and wrong are gradually dulled and the difficulty of telling fact from fiction.

In November, 1989, the television news announced that East Germans could now travel to the West.
People could get visas to cross the border between East and West.
Immediately people gathered at the Berlin Wall.
People started hacking at the wall with hammers and chisels.
The next day the police started demolishing the wall with bulldozers.
It was a momentous day for Germany and for the whole of Europe.
It was the end of a divided Germany.
It was also the beginning of the end of hostile relationships between East and West Europe.

In the Middle East, Israeli politicians never have to wear a tie in parliament but in Egypt where it's even hotter in the summer,
a politician wouldn't think of being in parliament without a tie.
No wonder a tie rebellion gets attention.
It happened during an African fashion show in the Netherlands this week.
The Dutch Queen's husband, Prince Claus, who was the host for the event,
suddenly decided and said out loud that his tie was like a snake around his neck.
That night on Dutch television the anchorman and the sportscaster took off their ties in support.

John Williams is famous for his ability to write powerful and highly effective music for movies.
Mr. Williams has been writing music for movies since 1960,
but he is perhaps best known for his award-winning scores for movies such as Jaws, Star Wars, and Schindler's List.
Before he began writing music for the movies, Mr. Williams dreamed of being a concert pianist.
During the 1950s, Mr. Williams was into jazz and he worked in New York with many jazz artists.
Later, he moved to Los Angeles and got a job writing music for television shows.
It was this television job which led him into movies.
John Williams

Information, depending upon the route through which we absorb it, can be divided into three categories:
Genetic information is carried by the sperm of the father and the ovum of the mother.
It is passed down to us by our collective ancestors through countless years of refinement.
Intellectual information is one that we get through outside sources such as books, education, movies, television, and all manner of external media.
It is an indirect form of information.
Experiential information is one that we personally feel and absorb through direct experience or confrontation with an event.
It is a direct form of information.

People can now watch a great variety of video tapes at home on the VCR.
Materials available include everything stocked at the local video store and movies or any other programs from the 24-hour selections on television, as well as tapes made at home or borrowed from friends.
Such entertainment in the home is also more affordable than it is in public places.
The greater convenience of watching tapes at any hour and pausing a tape or finishing it at a later time makes entertainment possible for people who have very limited opportunities to go to the movies or watch television.
The VCR also enables family and friends to be together in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying one another’s company and also communicating in a way that is not possible in a movie theater.

Several factors can interfere with having a good memory.
One such factor is a lack of motivation.
Without a real desire to learn or remember something, you probably won’t.
Another cause is a lack of practice.
To stay sharp, memory skills, like any other skill, must be used on a regular basis.
A third factor that can hurt memory is self-doubt.
If you’re convinced you won’t remember something, you probably won’t.
A person with a positive attitude will do much better on a test than someone who is sure he or she won’t remember the material.
Lastly, distraction can interfere with memory.
If you are being distracted by the sound of a television or a conversation nearby,
try to find a quiet environment before you attempt to commit something to memory.

We have moved from going to a football game once a week to having sports on television twenty-four hours a day.
Billions of dollars go to the salaries of sports heroes each year.
Clearly, we are obsessed with sports and in particular, winning at sports.
The effect on our children is tremendous;
some children have no time with one or both parents who are locked to the television on a daily basis.
More important is the huge increase in parental concern about their children being on a winning team.
Winning has become more important than playing to do your best and have fun.

What makes a person really attractive?
I remember seeing Omar Sharif in Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia.
At that time, I thought he was astoundingly handsome.
But when I saw him being interviewed on television some months later, and heard him declare that his only interest in life was playing bridge,
to my great amazement he was transformed before my eyes into an astoundingly unappealing man.
Although a person's good looks may get our attention, it is not an impression that necessarily lasts.

Talk of intelligent life on other planets was once the stuff of science fiction or idle speculation.
Recently, however, many astronomers have promoted the view that civilizations may be scattered among the stars like grains of sand.
The idea has inspired countless novels, movies, and television shows,
but has also led to a long and serious scientific search, using huge dish antennas that scan the sky for faint radio signals coming from intelligent aliens.

No one doubts the enormous potential benefits of modern telecommunications for the poorer countries.
When there are too few teachers and schools are too far apart, ‘virtual universities' using video, television and Internet can fill a huge gap:
when markets are far away and advertising too expensive, the Internet opens doors to small and medium-sized enterprises;
where medical specialists are rare, tele-medicine projects have saved lives; where the press faces repression, the Internet has provided new freedoms.
The Food and Agriculture Organization has helped farmers' associations use Internet links to plan planting, follow the weather, and find buyers.

Most of the middle-school texts are full of sidebars, boxes, and other presumably eye-catching special features bearing such titles as
“Flex Your Brain!”, “EXPLORE!”, “Find Out!”, and “Minds On!”
The claim is often made that with today's generation of television-reared children, books need to offer all sorts of bright, short, attention-getting features.
But several studies show the opposite: Some children try to read through a whole page from top to bottom as if it were a “traditional” text and become confused by the sudden jumps into sidebar material and captions.
Others look at the picture captions but never read the text.
Still others read the text but never read the feature titles.

In the twentieth century, there have been many advances in technology.
Scientists have sent people out into space and even to the moon.
Television, cars, and computers have changed our lives profoundly.
New medical treatments have offered hope and even life itself to severely ill people.
We have come a long way because of technology.

Film is the director's medium, television the writer's, but the theater is the actor's.
When the actor is onstage, it is he and he alone who drives the moment.
The audience have no choice but to remain in his faith or leave.
That's the real magic of the profession.
The actor onstage is all-powerful, for once the curtain rises, he is in control.
There is nothing the director or author can do once the curtain goes up.
The actor can choose to do or say anything he likes; he is the governor; he cracks the whip.

Tom seems to watch too much television.

The sort of companies which invest heavily in television advertising are those which normally lead the economy out of a recession.

In 1983, television advertising should grow by another nine percent, after inflation, the industry's forecasters say.

Dean Rusk, former secretary of state and now professor of international
law at the University of Georgia in Athens, is constantly called upon to give
interviews, and is accordingly well prepared. One day last spring, arriving
early at the university's studio, where a television show was to be taped, he
took his place on the set and reviewed his notes while the crew completed
preparations. The floor manager announced that they would begin in five minutes.
Rusk produced a compact from his pocket, took out a powder puff and applied it
to his bald head, which would otherwise reflect the TV lights. He then put the
compact away and announced he was ready to begin.

One day, at a Washington Senators baseball game, someone in the large party in the
President's box ordered hot dogs and began passing them around. The President
was suddenly seen sitting doubled over, his head between his knees, wolfing down
a hot dog. Off his diet again, he was afraid that Lady Bird might be watching
the game on television and see him eating it.

Inactivity is another myth. Surveys show that people over sixty spend much less
time being entertained by radio and television than people in their twenties.

Lengthy nightly television reports gave Poles a chilling view of amphibious

print ads , brochures and television may not be enough to deliver
substantial results.

What do you do in your spare time?혹은
What do you do in your free time?
Nothing special은 I do nothing special을 줄인표현이다. TV를 볼 때는 watch
TV나 watch television라고 말하고, 라디오를 들을 때는 listen to the
Listen to music on the radio

Television took the place of radio.

I can barely remember life without television. I have spent 20,000 hours
of my life in front of television. Not all my contemporaries watched so
much, but many did, and what's more, we watched the same programs and
heard the same commercials. So our generation has a tremendous amount of
experience in common. The TV programs have not affected all of us in an
identical way. If a sociologist, however, would list some of the most
important influences on our generation, television would top the list.

Reading involves a complete form of mental activity. Television
viewing does not demand complex mental activities. Reading develops the
power of imagination and inner visualization. Television viewing limits
the workings of the viewer's imagination. Reading is a two-way process :
the reader can also write; television viewing is a one-way street: the
viewer cannot create television images. Books are ever available, ever
controllable. Television controls.

A television reporter asked some children what their dreams were. One
child answered, "My dream is to go to a good, competitive school."
Another child responded, "I want to be a millionaire." Somewhat later, in
the same program, a five-year-old child answered, "A personal computer."
Children are becoming more and more realistic. Unless children are
encouraged to develop their imaginations, this realistic world will be
inhabited by robots!

At Jim's invitation the prince and the princess attended the event.
Seven satellites beamed the event to over one hundred countries.
Millions of people, watching Jim's concert on television, were asked to
phone in pledges of money to give to African relief. Jim raised over one
hundred million dollars to provide relief for the drought victims in
Africa. jim's idea paid off.

Do you have a little brother or sister who listens to commercials on
television and then tries to get your mother to buy every product he or
she has seen advertised? Sometimes little children are so "sold" by
commercials that they really believe their family must eat only one kind
of cereal or use a certain brand of soap. Advertisers change people's
thinking by using language which appeals to emotions. This is an example
of the power of language.

I can't live a normal life
I was raised by the street
So I gotta be down with the hood team
To much television watching got me chasing dreams
I'm an education fool with money on my mind
Got my ten in my hand and a gleam in my eyes

In an interactive, text-based computer game designed to represent a world inspired by the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, thousands of players spend up to eighty hours a week participating in intergalactic exploration and wars.
Through typed descriptions and typed commands, they create characters who have casual and romantic sexual encounters, hold jobs and collect paychecks, attend rituals and celebrations, fall in love and get married.

In America, too, such distinctions still hold true to some extent, with the world of high or serious art (opera, ballet, poetry) usually not seen as part of what has come to be called pop culture (rock and other forms of popular music, movies, television, comic strips, mass market fiction, and so on).

The effectiveness of human society, therefore, is largely dependent upon the clarity, accuracy, and efficiency with which language is used or understand.
As man's voice reaches now with ease - by radio, by cable, by television - across continents, and oceans, the importance of what he says becomes paramount.
But language, unlike such phenomena as breathing and eating, is not biologically inherent : it is not instinctively present.

"For example, we can see a lot of talented writers give up on writing creative novels because they simply cannot make a living by writing alone.
Numerous stage actors who pursue pure drama nowadays turn to screen and television, not because they want to become more popular but because they need the money.
In many cases of female artists, they just get married and give up their careers," she said.
"In Korea, I have to admit that most of the politicians still regard culture and arts as an accessory.
They need to realize that giving priority to cultural policies will ultimately reinforce the nation's quality of living and set the model for the children's future."

Mother Teresa throughout all her life manifested the virtues of a genuinely liberated person: Faith, hope, courage, charity.
Mother Teresa possessed the kind of beauty that causes one to think of Christmas and of Easter and―ultimately ―of God.
It is not the kind of beauty celebrated by the Beautiful People of society who identify with wealth, popularity, social prestige and status symbols.
Nor is it the beauty exhibited by Playboy and Penthouse models, television and movie idols and contestants in Miss Universe pageants.
Rather, Mother Teresa possessed a moral and spiritual beauty―reflected in her face, eyes and good deeds―which far transcends mere physical beauty.
Mother Teresa was a living saint in heaven.

Some people cling to the idea that to read a book is in itself a worthier activity than to watch television, or to talk to your neighbor over the garden fence.
However, this is a foolish idea unless the reader is deeply occupied in thinking about the contents of the book he is reading.

Everyone should know by now that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause serious physical and mental problems in the unborn child.
Most doctors have told their patients, television announcements have dramatized the dangers, and warning signs have gone up in restaurants and bars.
But too many mothers-to-be are not getting the message.
More than 50,000 babies are born in the U.S. each year with alcohol-related defects.
In about one-fourth of these cases, the damage―ranging from facial deformities to heart abnormalities―is severe enough to be classified as fetal alcohol syndrome.

The amount of money that marketers spend to advertise their products on television depends on two factors:
the time the ad appears and the estimated number of people who will watch that program.

For example, advertisements shown on Monday through Friday during the day cost less than those that appear in prime-time.
Prime-time ads are more expensive because the audience for the ads is larger.
In addition to the time of the ad, the popularity of the television program makes a difference in the cost.

Research shows that people who watch a lot of TV are influenced by its unrealistic representation of sex roles.
For example, there are many more male characters than females by three to one on prime-time TV.
Also, men play a far greater variety of roles than women.
In addition, fewer than 20 percent of married mothers on television work outside the home; in real life, over 50 percent do.
No wonder so many TV viewers agree that "women should run their homes and let men run the country."

And it actually sickens me
that someone made you feel unsafe in your own home.
And I give you my word that to the best of my knowledge,
none of our people had anything to do with it.
But you know what sickens me more?
That right now, your husband is using you
as a prop on national television to try and win a debate.
So I think you're the one that owes your wife an apology, Frank.

Did you know that your golf course paints its grass?
Excuse me?
It's actually vegetable dye.
Biodegradable.
They've been using green dye on Television tournaments for several years.
What's your point?
I found a pair of nylons in the back of your husband's closet.
We, uh, we have receipts that link them to your client.
The exact same dye from the golf course,
where Zachary was laid to rest, is on your nylons.
She belongs to the club. Grass stains.
But she doesn't play golf. Remember our conversation, Mrs. Anderson?
It's not your game?

This isn't nonprofit theater.
It's advertiser-supported television.
- You know that, right? - I'd rather do a good show for 100 people
than a bad one for a million, if that's what you're saying.

- What's your position? - That people should know what they're screaming about.
Are you ready to go on television and say
that this well wouldn't have blown up if there had been more government oversight?
I'll give you my next paycheck if it doesn't turn out
that some department was defunded or some industry was deregulated.
He'll do it, too.

Guys, great job tonight.
These things are done by teams, and I've got the best team in television.
I'm gonna make sure each and every one of you
knows how important you are to me.
- This isn't our control room. - No.
Then screw it.

The spill is all anyone's talking about.
Because we're the ones telling them to.
We're still reporting on it, just not at the top.
I'm looking at film of an oil rig sinking into the ocean.
That's pretty good television.
We don't do good television, we do the news.

Couldn't you be making a lot more money producing reality television?
I do produce reality television.
I don't know what to tell you.
I like my job.

To them who are here in the room,

your government failed you.
Those entrusted with protecting you
failed you.
And I failed you.

That public service would be one hour of air time

Congress, unable to anticipate the enormous capacity
television would have to deliver consumers to advertisers,
failed to include in its deal the one requirement
that would have changed our national discourse
immeasurably for the better.
Congress forgot to add that under no circumstances
could there be paid advertising
during informational broadcasting.

Pardon, it would be accurate to say what started?
Was he aware that he went on television
and said everything his network had done
up until that point was trash?
I think he was fully aware of what he said
and that he was on television when he said it.
He also took responsibility for himself
and not the network or the company.
What are we talking about?

I'll fire him, Charlie.
What?
I'm not asking him to lie.
I'm not asking him to cover anything up.
But he's going to tone it down or I'm going to fire him.
Well, best of luck trying to program against him.
Oh, I don't have to. He's got a non-compete clause in his contract.
He's gonna have to stay off television for three years.
That's a death sentence.
It is.
How would you possibly explain firing
the second most watched anchor on cable?

Leona's really pissed that you're shooting at Tea Party congressmen
and senators she has to do business with.
How pissed?
I'm not asking him to lie.
I'm not asking him to cover anything up.
But he's gonna tone it down or I'll fire him.
Well, best of luck trying to program against him.
I won't have to.
He's got a non-compete clause in his contract.
He's got to stay off television for three years.
- That's a death sentence. - It is.
