new history for the Earth's surface.

지진(earthquake)은 발생원인 또는 형태를 기준으로
구조지진( tectonic earthquakes)
화산지진( volcanic earthquakes)
함몰지진( implosions or collapse earthquakes)
으로 분류한다.
이들을 자연지진(natural earthquakes)이라 하는데 대부분의 지진은
구조지진으로서 지구외부의 대규모 변형을 일으키는 힘의 원동력인
구조력(tectonic force)에 의하여 축적된 탄성에너지가 일시에 방출되는
현상에 기인하는 것이다.
화산지진은 화산지역에서 화산폭발이 원인이 되어 발생하는 지진이며,
함몰지진은 지각 내부 어딘가에 연약한 지반이나 공동(空洞)이 내려
앉으면서 발생하는 지진이다.
제한된 공간과 시간내에서 상대적으로 규모가 가장 큰 지진을
본진(本震:principal earthquakes)이라 하고 그 앞의 지진은
전진(前震:foreshocks), 그 뒤에 지진은 여진(餘震:aftershocks)이라
한다. 본진이라 할 만한 지진이 없을 경우에는 무리지진(群發地震:
earthquake swarms) 혹은 지진군(地震群)이라 한다.
한편, 땅속에서 화약을 폭발시키거나 지하핵실험 등으로 지진과 유사한
현상이 일어 나는데 이를 인공지진(man-made earthquakes)이라 한다.
인공지진은 아니지만 인간의 행위가 원인이 되는 지진으로서, 깊은 우물에
대량의 물을 주입하거나 높은 댐을 만들어 저수하면 그 부분에 지진이
일어나는 경우가 있는데 이것을 유발지진(induced earthquakes)이라 한다.
