→ 「과연 ~인지는 모르겠지만…」의 뜻으로 좀 양보적인 의미가 있다.
→ 「분명히 그는 젊다. 그러나 나이에 비해서는 신중하다.」 ⇒ It is true he is young, but he is prudent for his age.
→ 「과연 그는 심리학자임에 틀림없으나, 아동을 다루는 법은 모르는 것 같다.」 Indeed he is a psychologist, but he doesn't seem to know how to control children.
→ 「그는 분명히 좋은 선수이긴 하지만, 그의 형과는 비교가 안 된다」 I admit he is a good player, but he cannot compare (or be compared) with his brother.
→ 「건강에 주의한다는 것」은 to take care of one's health 와 같이 부정사를 주어로 할 수도 있지만, it를 내세워 문장의 균형을 잡는 것이 좋다.
→ 「병에 걸리는 것을 지나치게 두려워하다」/be too much afraid of getting ill. 좋지 않다/ not wise; unwise; bad policy등, 「병에 걸리다」/ become ill; fall ill, get ill; be taken ill 등.

[比較] suppose, guess, imagine, assume, infer
guess는 자신 없이 추측할 때 쓰이고, suppose는 consider as true～란 뜻을 지닌다.
I am able to suppose how upset you are just from the expression in your eyes.(당신 눈빛만 보고도 당신이 얼마나 당황하고 있는지 짐작할 수 있네.)/ Can you guess how old I am?
imagine은 보다 더 넓은 문맥에서 창작적인 추측이나 사실과 다른 고의적인 추측을 가리킬 때 쓰이며 잘못된 추측을 암시할 때 쓰인다.
He imagines that people don't like him.
He had imagined that he had heard a scraping noise.
assume 역시 take as a fact or as true without proof라는 뜻인데, suppose보다는 formal style에서 쓰인다.

infer는 전제 또는 어떤 증거로부터 결론에 도달하는 경우에 쓰인다.

[比較] take, seize, grasp, clutch, snatch, grab
take는 가장 일반적이고도 가장 색채가 없는 말로, 본래의 뜻대로 쓰이는 경우에는 손을 잡는 것을 가리킬 뿐이다.

비유적으로, 형체가 없는 것에 쓰여, 어려운 작업이란 뜻을 내포하는 ‘소유하다, 지배하다’를 의미한다.
take a city
이 두 극단적인 의미를 갖고 있는 take는 어떤 방법으로나 무엇을 잡는 것을 의미한다.

seize는 갑자기 세게 잡거나 쥐는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 이런 뜻을 강조하는 경우에는 take 대신에 쓰일 수 있다.

비유적으로는 많은 사람 혹은 모든 사람의 정신력이 미치지 못하는 사물을 완전히 이해하는 능력을 암시한다.
grasp an idea
clutch는 흔히 무서움, 조바심에서 단단히 잡는 것, 잡고 싶은 것이나, 쥐고 싶은 것을 단단히 또는 발작적으로 grasp하는 것을 의미한다. 특히 자동사로 쓰이는 경우에는 grasp보다 잡는 데 성공하는 뜻이 덜 들어있고, 성공하는 뜻이 들어 있는 경우에만 꽉 쥐고 있는 뜻을 암시한다.

snatch는 돌연히 재빠르게 또는 남 모르게 슬쩍 seize하는 것을 의미한다. 이것은 비교하는 말 중에서 가장 갑작스러운 동작을 암시하지만, 가장 가까운 동의어인 seize처럼 폭력을 사용하는 뜻은 암시하지 않는다.

위의 예처럼 슬그머니 하는 일, 재빨리 구조하는 일, 무례하거나 난폭한 행위의 뜻을 품는다.

grab는 snatch보다 무례하고 난폭한 뜻이 더 강하고, seize만큼 폭력을 사용하는 뜻을 품고 있다. 위의 말 중에서 가장 천한 것, 남의 권리에 대해서 무관심한 것, 또는 자기가 원하는 것을 공공연하게 염치없이 집는 것을 보통 뜻한다.

* beat it 이라고 하면 많이 들어본 말이긴 하지만 알고 보면
생각했었던 거와 전혀 다른 의미를 지니고 있음을 알게 된다.
예를 들면 미국에 이민온 지 얼마 되지 않는 교포 청년이
아파트를 구하러 다니다가 어느 집 앞에서 고약한 개 한 마리와
마주쳤다. 개는 청년을 보고 마구 짖어 댔다. 청년이 개한테
겁을 주기 위해 개를 발길로 차는 시늉을 하니까 개는 뒤로
물러서면서 더 짖어 댔다. 이때 그 집에서 한 노파가 나오더니
'beat it'이라고 소리쳤다. 그런데 교포 청년은 그 말을
'때려라'고 하는 줄 알고 개를 한번 발길로 찼다. 그러나
노파는 미친 듯이 무어라고 소리를 질러 댔고 겁이 난 청년은
삼십육계 줄행랑을 쳤다. 이 교포 청년이 'beat it'을 알아들은
것은 제대로 알아들었다. 그러나 그 뜻을 '개를 때려라'라고
해석한 것은 잘못이었다. 왜냐하면 beat it은 우리말 '저리 가!'의
속된 표현인 '꺼져'에 해당하는 말이기 때문이다.
같은 뜻으로 get lost!, scram, split, buzz off, take a walk등
많이 있다. 그 노파가 'go away' 라고만 말했어도 '저리가!'라는
뜻으로 알았을 테지만 속어인 beat it!이라고 했으니 갓 이민온
그 청년이 알아들을 리 만무했다. beat의 원래 뜻은 '때리다'이지만
'선수를 친다'는 뜻으로도 많이 쓰인다.
You beat me to her.라고 한다면 '네가 그녀한테 나보다 선수를
쳤구나'라는 뜻이 된다. beat는 또 속어로서 tired, '피곤하다'는
뜻으로도 쓰인다. You look beat.는 '너 피곤해 보이는구나'란
말이다. 또 beat me는 I don't know.와 같다.

So-so와 So-and-so
* so-so는 not so good, not so bad의 준말이라 생각하여 '그저 그래'란
말이고, so와 so사이에 and가 하나 더 들어가서 so-and-so가 되면
전혀 다른 뜻이 된다. 이것은 남을 나쁘게 말하되 직설적으로
표현하지는 않고 '왜 그렇고 그런 사람 아니냐?'는 식으로 말할 때 쓴다.
예를 들면 상사가 아무것도 아닌걸 가지고 한바탕 잔소리를 하고
나간 뒤에 하는 말이 동료가 하는 말이 Don't take it seriously.
He's always been a nagging so-and-so.라고 한 마디 해주면
'그걸 뭐 심각하게 생각하지 말라구. 그 자식이야 항상 잔소리
많은 그렇고 그런 사람이니까'란 말이 된다. so-and-so의 복수
즉 여러 사람을 가리킬 때는 끝에 s만 하나 더 붙여 so-and-sos라고
쓰면 된다. 그리고 so-and-so를 전부 나쁜 욕이라고 생각하면 안 된다.
왜냐하면 이것은 막연히 '아무개'란 뜻으로도 쓰이기 때문이다.
예를 들어 교수가 학생들에게 시험지 오른쪽 위를 가리키며
Write your name, Mr.so-and-so, right here.라고 했다면
이것은 '바로 여기에 여러분의 이름 즉 미스터 아무개라고
쓰세요'란 말이 된다.

My hat's off to you. 경의를 표합니다.
* '당신에게 내 모자를 벗습니다'라고 하면 I admire you 또는
I respect you 즉 '난 당신을 존경합니다.'와 같은 말이다.
I take off my hat to you라고 길게 말하기도 한다. 같은 뜻으로
I've got to hand it to you라고도 하는데 이것은 '존경한다.'는
뜻도 되고 '알아줘야겠다'는 뜻도 된다.

Don't take it personally 개인적으로 유감이 있는게 아냐
* A라는 어떤 사람이 B라는 사람에게 회의 중 비난하는 발언을 하고
난 뒤 Don't take it personally라고 말했다면 '내가 당신에게 유감이
있는 것으로 오해하지 마시오'란 말이 된다. 그리고
I take it personally란 말도 있는데 이것은 '날 두고 하는 소리지?'란
우리말에 해당한다고 할 수 있다. '도둑이 제발 저린다'는 말이 있는데
대화 중에 다른 사람 흉을 보고 있는데 자기 흉을 보는 줄 알고
화를 내며 I take it personally!라고 소리쳤다면
'날 두고 하는 소리지!'란 말이 된다.

Even a worm will turn 지렁이도 밟으면 꿈틀거린다.
* '앉아서 당하지는 않겠다'는 걸 영어로는 뭐라할까?
I'm not going to take it lying down이라는 영어 표현이
있는데 영어에서는 '누워서'란 당한다고 하는 것이 다를 뿐
근본적으론 같다. Let's not take it lying down도 그냥
당하고 있지만은 않겠다는 의지를 나타낸다.

일반적으로 헤어질 때 그냥 '수고하십시오'라고 하고 싶다면
헤어질 때 인사말을 쓰는 것이 훨씬 더 자연스럽습니다.
