As the population of Curitiba grew fast, it needed a mass-trans system but couldn't afford an expensive subway.
City planners began, instead, with an unusual system of buses in the center lanes of five wide major streets.
At each bus stop, there is a forty-foot-long glass tube.
Passengers pay before they enter the tube.
Then they get on the bus ¡°subway style¡±¡ªthrough wide doors.
This allows people to get on and off the bus quickly and efficiently.
People don't crowd onto the bus; loading and unloading takes only thirty seconds.
This makes commuting more pleasant.

Traditional fairy tales show heroines who are usually beautiful and passive and spend a lot of their time indoors cooking and cleaning.
Many authors today, however, are creating fairy stories in which the heroines are more active.
For example, in Cinder Edna, a modern version of Cinderella by Ellen B. Jackson, the heroine wears comfortable shoes and takes the bus to the party.
In Sleepless Beauty by Frances Minters, Beauty, instead of falling asleep, fools the wicked witch by setting an alarm clock.
In other stories set in modern times, more and more strong, clever female characters are appearing.

You're late for work, and you don't have a car.

What do you do? If you live in Helsinki, Finland, you can take a green bicycle from the street and ride it to work.
Helsinki's City Bike Program operates 26 bike stands in the center of Helsinki.
You take a city bike from a stand and leave a small deposit.
When you return it to a stand, you get your money back.
The bicycles are simple but convenient to use.
They have a special sign, and they are painted bright green, so it is easy to spot them.
The program is a practical way to get around.
All kinds of people use the bicycles: shoppers, elderly people, and students going to class.

It was passed the rush hour and they must have increased the
train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.

I chose to park the car in a nearby parking lot and take the
subway. The parking lot was also crowded and I had to
parallel park the car. I signaled and pulled up about a meter
away from the car I wanted to park behind, aligning my rear
tires with the other car's rear bumper. Put the car into
reverse, and turned my wheel all the way to the right. Slowly
backed up until I was at a 45 degree angle, and stopped.
Turned the wheels again all the way to the left, and slowly
backed up until I was parallel with the wall. Backed up
straight as far as I could go without touching the car behind
me. I made sure I had enough room to clear the car in front
of me. That way, I could ease out of the parking space when I
got back. How sly I am.
