꽤나 시간이 걸릴 것 같다. 한 정거장만 가면 되는데… 오늘 왜
일이 자꾸 꼬이지? 시간은 시간대로 늦고 돈만 버리고, 되는 일이
없네. 차라리 뛰어갈 걸 그랬나 보다. 10여분이 지나자 열차가
들어오는 소리가 들렸다. 사람들이 우루루 열차문 앞에 몰렸다.
뒤에 있던 한 뚱뚱이 아줌마가 내린다음 타라는 안내방송에는
아랑곳 하지 않은채 내리는 사람들사이를 비집고 들어갔다.

train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.
1. It was passed the rush hour: 어느 시점을 두고 그 시점을

6. Pulling in: 자동차나 기차 등이 서서히 자기쪽으로 오는 것을
pull in한다고 합니다. 여기서는 플랫폼으로 들어오는 것을
말하지요.
7. Didn't bother to line up: 줄을 서려고 애쓰지 않았다는
말이지요. Bother는 원래 일부러 수고를 해서 무엇무엇한다는
뜻입니다.
예를 들어, 누군가 귀찮은 걸 무릅쓰고 도와주려 한다면,
Please, don't bother. It's too much of a hassle.
아이, 안그러셔도 됩니다. 너무 귀찮은 일이잖아요.
부정의 의미로 쓰이면, "신경을 전혀 쓰지 않는다"의 의미가
됩니다.
Line up은 줄을 선다는 뜻입니다.
8. Stormed towards the train: Storm은 폭풍우를 말합니다.
폭풍우가 몰아치 듯이 와르르 몰려드는 것도 storm이지요.

뜻입니다.
10. Jumping the line: 새치기하는 걸 말합니다. 줄을 건너 뛰는
것이지요.
Jump the queue는 영국식 영어지요. Jump the gun이라는 말도
있습니다. 달리기 선수들이 총을 쏘기도 전에 뛰어나가는 걸
말하지요. 비유적으로도 씁니다.
11. Force one's way through: 동사 + one's way + 전치사 형태는
유용하게 쓸 수 있는 구문입니다. 한번 살펴볼까요?

사람들을 헤집고 들어갔다.
He elbowed his way into the bus.
팔꿈치로 밀고 버스 안으로 들어갔다.
He felt his way out of the room.

차라리 근처 주차장에 차를 세우고 지하철을 타는 편이 낫겠다는
생각이 들었다. 주차장에 가보니 병렬 주차할 공간밖에 없었다.
깜빡이를 켠 후 앞차보다 1미터 정도 거리를 두고차를 세웠다. 뒷
타이어가 앞 차 뒷 범퍼와 일렬이 된 걸 확인했다. 후진 기어를
넣고 오른쪽으로 핸들을 완전히 틀었다. 그리고는 45도 각도로
차를 돌려 천천히 후진을 하다 멈췄다. 이번엔 왼쪽으로 핸들을
완전히 꺽은 다음 벽과 일렬이 될 때까지 후진해 들어갔다.
뒷차와 닿지 않도록 조심하면서 후진을 했다. 나올 때를 생각해서
앞 차에 닿지 않고 나갈 수 있을 만큼 충분한 공간을 뒀다. 난
역시 똑똑해.
I chose to park the car in a nearby parking lot and take the
subway. The parking lot was also crowded and I had to
parallel park the car. I signaled and pulled up about a meter
away from the car I wanted to park behind, aligning my rear
tires with the other car's rear bumper. Put the car into
reverse, and turned my wheel all the way to the right. Slowly
backed up until I was at a 45 degree angle, and stopped.
Turned the wheels again all the way to the left, and slowly
backed up until I was parallel with the wall. Backed up
straight as far as I could go without touching the car behind
me. I made sure I had enough room to clear the car in front
of me. That way, I could ease out of the parking space when I
got back. How sly I am.
1. Chose to park: choose to ~ 는 무엇무엇하기로 결정하다는
표현입니다.
Decide to와 다른 점이라면 몇가지 상황 중 하나를 선택해서
결정한다는 것이지요. 여기서는 자동차를 계속 타고 가는 것보다
주차시키는 것이 낫겠다고 생각해서 선택하는 것을 의미합니다.
2. Take the subway: Take a bus, take a taxi라고 하지만
지하철은 take the subway라고 합니다.
3. Paraller park: 명사구 또는 동사구로도 씁니다. 병렬
주차지만 우리말로는 일렬 주차가 더 일반적이지요. 벽면으로 죽
차를 늘어놓고 주차시키는 걸 말합니다.
4. Pulled up about a meter away: Pull은 차를 서서히 세우거나
움직일 때 쓰는 동사입니다. Up이 쓰인 것은 개념상 뒷 차보다
윗쪽에 세우는 것이기 때문이지요.
5. Aligning my rear tires with ~ : align은 정렬시키는 걸
말합니다. 카센터에 가면 휠 얼라인먼트라고 씌여있지요? 바퀴를
정렬해주는 것이지요. 워드 프로세서에?
문단을 정렬하는 것도 alignment라고 합니다.
6. Put the car into reverse: 차를 후진에 놓는 것이구요.
전진에 놓으면 put the car into drive겠지요.
Overdrive에 놓으려면 put the car into overdrive.
또는 Pops English에서 다뤘던 Savage Garden의 To the Moon and
Back 가사에도 나왔듯 push the shift to overdrive라고 할 수도
있지요.
7. All the way: 무엇무엇을 어느 한도까지 완전히 할 때 쓰는
말이지요. 어느 지점까지 한번도 쉬지 않고 달려갔다면,
He ran all the way to his home.
집까지 줄곧 달렸다.
8. At a 45 degree angle: 전치사를 잘 보세요. 각도도 역시 어느
지점에 불과 합니다. 지점을 나타낼 때 쓰는 전치사는 at이지요.
어떤 전치사를 써야할 지 고민될 때는 "의미"를 새겨보세요.
9. Clear the car: 비켜간다는 말을 clear한다고 합니다. 앞에
장애물이 없는 것이 clear거든요.
가끔가다 영화를 보면 몰래 밖을 내다보면서,
The coast is clear. 라고 하는 걸 볼 수 있는데요. 무슨 무슨
전선 이상무라고 하는 것과 같습니다. Coast는 여기서 해변이라는
뜻이 아니라구요.
10. Ease out of the parking space: 힘들이지 않고 나온다는
말이지요.

군대에서 병사들의 이동을 지휘하는 구령 중에 보통걸음보다 빠르게 걸어
가라고 지시하는 말로 Double time!'이라는 말이 있는데,이는 보통 걸음걸이
의 두배 정도로 빠르게 행진하라는 뜻이다. 이 구령에서 비롯된 On the do
uble'이라는 말은 「서두르세요」라는 의미를 지니고 있다.
Husband:What time is it?
Wife:Five to eight.
Husband:Five to eight? Oh my, I'll be late for the shuttle bus.
Wife:Please hurry up, or you'll have to run all the way to the compa
ny.
Husband:Bye, honey!
Wife:Take care!
Husband:Oh, I left my draft. Please go get it for me.
Wife:Where's it?
Husband:Maybe on the desk. On the double.
Wife:On the double?
Husband:I'm asking you to hurry up.
남편:몇시요?
아내:8시5분 전이에요.
남편:8시5분 전? 맙소사,셔틀버스를 놓치게 생겼군.
아내:서두르세요. 안 그러면 회사까지 줄곧 달려가셔야 할 거예요.
남편:다녀오겠소.
아내:조심하세요.
남편:아,서류를 잊고 갈 뻔했군. 가서 서류 좀 갖다 줘요.
아내:어디 있는데요?
남편:아마 책상 위에 있을 거요. 서둘러요.(On the double)
아내:"On the double"요?
남편:서두르라고 부탁하는 거요.
