[比較] outline, summary, brief, synopsis
outline은 책·제목·계획 등의 요점만을 보이는 대체적인 초안, 또는 최초의 개략을 말한다.
ex) He submitted an outline of his speech to his superior for approval.
summary는 특히 한 저작품의 결론으로서 요점을 간단히 서술한 것 또는 재술한 것을 말한다.
ex) The last chapter contained an excellent summary of the whole book.
형용사로는 「간략한, 간단하고 포괄적인」, 여기서 확대되어 「형식을 차리고 빨리, 약식의」(unceremoniously fast)를 의미한다.
ex) This summary dismissal of his plea was infuriating.(그의 이 소송에 대한 즉결에는 사람을 격노시키는 데가 있었다.)
[比較] brief는 어떤 완성된 논설(보통 법적 논설)을 항·목으로 갈라서 진술한, 자세한 요약이다. 현대 용법에서는 법률과 토론에 거의 전적으로 국한되어 있다.
synopsis는 어떤 제목에 대해서 개관을 주는 압축된 진술이다. 현대 영어에서는 소설이나 극의 이야기 줄거리(plot)를 압축해서 말하는 것을 가리키는 데에 보통 쓰인다.
ex) Such synopses have little value for the student, because the mere events of the action are not the most important part of the plays.
The executive saved time by reading his assistant's synopsis.
