hit는 「단번」의 타격을 뜻하나, beat는 계속(연속)적인 타격을 암시하는 이외에도 「타격을 가하다; 타격을 가해서 상처를 입히다」는 뜻으로 쓰이는 경우, hit와 달리 human noun이 주어, 목적어가 된다.
He hit the ball with a bat./ The men beat him unmercifully.
strike는 「(상당한 힘을 가하여) 치다, 때리다」는 뜻으로, 「타격」과 관련해서 가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 말이고 hit보다 감정적 의미를 강하게 반영한다.

strike와 혼동되기 쉬운 낱말에 stroke가 있는데, stroke는 「쓰다듬다」란 뜻이다.

sway는 조용히 swing하는 것 또는 흔들리기 쉬운 물건이나 안정성이 없는 물건이 받쳐주는 것이 없어서 또는 압력·무게에 눌려서 흔들리는 것을 말한다.

oscillate는 시계의 추처럼 늘어져 달린 물건이 일정한 두 점 사이를 자동적이고도 규칙적으로 번갈아 왔다갔다하는 운동을 가리킨다.

비유적으로는 상태·태도·입장 따위가 극단에서 극단으로 바뀐다는 뜻을 품는다.

undulate는 물결 같은 운동을 암시하는 데에는 fluctuate보다 이 말이 훨씬 많이 쓰인다. 또한 비유적으로는 급격한 변화를 암시하지 않고, 꾸준히 흐르는 물의 물결을 연상시켜서, 계속적으로 출렁거리는 잔물결을 암시하는 경우에 흔히 쓰인다.

rock은 요람(cradle)처럼, 어떤 물건의 밑바닥이 곡선형으로 되어 있어 느릿느릿 규칙적으로 또는 전후 좌우로 흔들리는 것을 나타낸다.
