Model is a reappearance of physical conditions being close to an actual state. Modeling is to try to explain the reaction observed by using various rules which are simple and understandable. These rules can be used to anticipate an experimental results including a given physical situations. Profitable model explains all viewpoints concerned with a given situation.

→ 「견문을 넓히다」는 「널리 이것저것을 보거나 듣거나 하다」, 「경험을 쌓다」로 표현한다면 다음과 같은 영문이 가능할 것이다.
- 당시, 많은 젊은 한국인들은 견문을 넓히기 위해서 미국으로 건너갔다.
Many young Koreans went to America to see and hear a lot then.
- 우리들은 견문을 넓히기 위해서 힘써 외국을 방문하도록 노력해야 한다.
We must try as often as possible to visit foreign countries to get further information about (our) life.
- 내 아저씨는 견문이 넓기 때문에 나는 존경한다.
My uncle is well-informed, so I respect him.
- 젊었을 때에 견문을 크게 넓히도록 하시오.
You should see more of life while you are young.
ANS 1) It was not my first plan to stop over at the Hawaiian Islands on my way home from America, but while I stayed there (for) a week, I could see and hear a lot.
ANS 2) At first I did not intend to stay at the Hawaiian Islands on my way back from America. But staying there for a week added to my experience [or stock of information].

(3) 민주주의의 국가에서는 해결하여야 할 여러 가지 문제와 개선되어야 할 일들이 끊임없이 생깁니다. 그러나 공개토론을 통해서 해결될 수 없을 만큼 큰 문제는 없습니다. 공개토론에서는 한 문제를 여러모로 의논할 수도 있고, 신중하게 고찰할 수 있으며, 여러 번 거듭해서 검토할 수도 있습니다. 그런 다음에 다수결에 의하여 최종적인 결정에 도달할 수가 있습니다.
→ 민주주의 국가에서는: in a democracy
→ 끊임없이 생긴다: There arise[will]…at all times.
→ 공개토론을 통해서 해결될 수 없을 만큼 (큰 문제): so great that it cannot be solved through open discussion
→ 한 문제를 여러모로 의논할 수 있다: all sides of a problem을 주어로 삼은 수동문으로 풀어 쓸 수 있다.
→ weigh에는 숙고하다는 뜻이 있다.
→ 그들과 같이 행동을 하는 것이 좋은지 혼자 남아 있는 것이 좋은지 한번 곰곰이 생각해 보아라. Why don't you weigh the advantages of joining them against those of staying along?
ANS) In a democracy, there will be problems to be solved and changes to be made at all times. But there is no problem so great that it cannot be solved through open discussion all sides of a problem can be talked over, weighed carefully, and studied again and again. Then a final decision is reached by a vote of the majority.

(5) 지체하다 비싼 호텔에 하룻밤 머물지 않으면 안 되었다.
→ Force A to-부정사도 무생물 주어가 흔히 사용된다. 물론 사람을 주어로 하여 be forced to-부정사라는 패턴을 사용할 수도 있다.
→ We couldn't help staying ~은 잘못. Couldn't help는 I couldn't help laughing 「웃지 않을 수 없었다」처럼 「자신을 억누를 수 없는 경우」에만 사용할 수 있다. Spend (for) one night는 안 됨. Stay 는 자동사이고 spend는 타동사이기 때문이다.
→ Because of the delay, we had to spend one night at an expensive hotel.
ANS) The delay forced us to stay overnight in an expensive hotel.

5. 우리는 날씨가 좋아질 때까지 여기에 머무르는 편이 좋다.
→「May as well+동사원형」=had better로서「~하는 게 더 낫다」라는 뜻이다. You (may as well) set to work at once. 너는 곧 일에 착수하는 것이 좋을 것이다.
→ We (had better) stay~로 하면 약간 그 뜻에 차이가 있어 서툴게 느껴진다. Weather 대신에 climate를 사용하지 말 것. Climate는 어떤 특정 지역의 일반적 기후를 말할 때 쓴다.
→「날씨가 좋아지다」 the weather improves/ the weather gets better
(ANS) We may as well stay here till the weather improves.

12. 우리는 날씨가 좋아질 때까지 여기에 머무르는 편이 좋다.
→「May as well+動詞 原形」=had better로서「~하는 게 더 낫다」라는 뜻이다. You (may as well) set to work at once. 너는 곧 일에 착수하는 것이 좋을 것이다.
→ We (had better) stay~로 하면 약간 그 뜻에 차이가 있어 서툴게 느껴진다. Weather 대신에 climate를 사용하지 말 것. Climate는 어떤 특정 지역의 一般的 氣侯를 말할 때 쓴다.
→「날씨가 좋아지다」 the weather improves/ the weather gets better
(ANS) We may as well stay here till the weather improves.

4. 요 전날 밤 만찬에 초대해 주셔서 감사합니다.
→「~해 주셔서 대단히 감사합니다. Thank very much for ~./ Thank you so much for ~.
→ 우리말처럼 혼동해서 I thanked very much ~처럼 과거형으로 하지 말 것.
→「요 전날 밤/ 전날 밤」 the other night
→「사람을 집에 묶게 하다」 have someone [people] to stay
(ANS) Thanks very much for having me to dinner the other night.

11. 2주 남짓하게 파리에 체재했다. 그리고 그 기간을 관광에 사용했다.
→ 「2주 남짓하게」 two weeks를 하나의 통합된 모양으로 다룬다고 하면 an extra two weeks로 하면 된다. 「여유 있는 주간」 (an extra week) 이 두개로 생각한다면 two extra weeks로 하면 된다.
→ For an extra two weeks, (when) we spent sightseeing로 하면 잘못, stay는 자동사이고, spend는 타동사이므로 목적어가 필요해서 when이 아니라 which가 필요. 또 spend two weeks (for) sightseeing의 for는 불필요하다.
→ 「관광을 하다」 see the sights/ go sightseeing
A busy three days로 말하면 three days가 하나의 덩어리로 다루어지고 있기 때문에 「바쁜 날이 3일 연속이다」에 사용한다.
(ANS) We stayed an extra two weeks in Paris; and we spent it seeing the sights.

[比較] after, behind
「뒤에」를 의미하는 전치사·형용사·부사로서 동의어를 이루지만 서로 바꿔 쓰일 수는 없다. 장소·위치에 관해서 말할 때 after는 움직이는 것의 전후·순서를 나타내는 데에 운동을 표시하는 동사·명사와 함께 쓰인다.
The faculty marched in pairs, one after another.
이렇게 쓰이는 경우 어느 것이 앞서고 뒤서는지를 전혀 나타내지 않는다. run after a person은 그 사람 앞에 서려는 노력을 나타낼 뿐이다. 정지 상태의 동사와 함께 쓰이는 경우에도 운동의 전후·순서가 문맥에 의해 나타날 뿐이다. One stays after the others는 after the others who have left를, One calls after a person은 after a person who is walking ahead를, One looks after the children of a friend는 after the children of a friend who is away, ill, or engaged(집을 비웠거나 병을 앓는, 혹은 볼일이 있는 친구의 아이들의 뒤를)를 암시한다.
behind는 지거나, 남이 떠나간 후에 남아 있는 것을 가리킨다. 시간에 관해서 말할 때, after는 behind보다 훨씬 많이 쓰이는 말로 순서의 전후를 가리키는 데에 반드시 요구되는 말이다.

urge는 간원, 강력한 천거 따위를 해서 어떤 사람에게 무슨 일을 하도록 설복하는 강한 노력의 뜻이 들어있다.
He urged them to accept the plan.
exhort는 적당하고 올바르다고 생각되는 행동을 취하도록 진지하게 권하는 것을 암시한다.
The preacher exhorted his congregation to live better lives.
press는 거절하기 어려울 만큼 끊임없이 끈질기게 권하는 것을 가리킨다.
Because it was so stormy, we pressed our guest to stay all night./ They pressed me for an answer.
importune은 ‘조르다’는 뜻과 성가시고 진저리날 만큼 상대편의 반대를 무릅쓰고 요구를 관철하려는 끈질긴 노력을 암시한다.
She importuned her husband for more money.(or to give her more money.)

- 머물지 않으면 안 되었다. We couldn't help staying~는 잘못이고
I couldn't help laughing처럼 자신을 억누를 수 없는 경우에만 사용.

- 하룻밤을 보내다. spend for one night~는 spend가 타동사이기에 안 됨. spend one night, stay for one night는 가능.

on top of: 꿰뚫어 잘 알고 있는
ex) I stay on top of the news by reading newspapers every day.
(나는 매일 신문을 읽어 세상 돌아가는 소식에 환하다.)

stay on the right side of: 계속 ~ 편을 들다.

대체로 난 밤샘을 피할려고 해.

'이건 니가 알바가 아니니깐 좀 빠져'란 말이 된다.
Butt out.은 엉덩이(butt)를 치우라(out)라는 말이 되므로
'간섭하지 말라'는 뜻. 반대말은 butt in으로 남의 일에
'간섭한다'는 뜻이다. 이것은 slang이므로 이런 말을 외국인인
우리들이 함부로 쓰는 것은 좋지 않고 Butt out대신에
stay out of this나 keep your nose out of this라는 말을
쓰는 게 좋다. butt in 대신 meddle with나 interfere with란
말을 쓰는 것이 좋다. This is none of your business.
다음에 Mind your own business.란 말을 덧붙이면
'니 일이나 걱정해.' 란 뜻이 된다.

Without Taking a Bath라는 문구가 나왔는데 단지 액면
그대로 해석하면 전혀 말이 안되는 걸 알 수 있다.
그러면 이 말은 과연 무슨 뜻일까? 여기서 liquid는
'액체 상태로 있는'이 아니라 '현금으로 바꿀 수 있는
상태'를 가리키고 take a bath는 '목욕한다'는 말이
아니라 '금전상 큰 손해를 본다'는 뜻의 slang이다.
그리고 take a beating도 '매를 맞는다'는 뜻외에
역시 '금전적으로 큰 손해를 본다' '바가지 썼다'는
뜻으로 자주 쓰인다.
그리고 You got ripped off도 같은 의미이고
You paid through the nose라고 해도 역시
'너 바가지 썼다'란 말이 된다. 이런 말들은 slang이므로
우리 같은 외국인들이 함부로 쓸 것은 아니고
미국인들이 이런 말을 쓸 때 알아듣기만 하면 된다.
