Legend has it that John F. Kennedy decided to enter politics one evening after a
long conversation with his father. Joe, Sr. was supposed to have told Jack that since
Joe, Jr. had given his life for his country during the war, it was now up to
Jack to uphold the family's tradition of political public service. The entire family would support Jack, his
father said. And as the story goes, Jack heeded his father's urging, and decided to enter politics on
the spot.
But the truth is somewhat different. Certainly there was a political tradition in
the Kennedy
family. To be sure, Joe, Sr. wanted to see this tradition carried on, and certainly
he felt it
should be carried by Jack since Joe had died. But this is all too simple - for it takes
everything into account except the one most important thing - the remarkable
personality of Jack Kennedy.
전해내려오는 얘기에 의하면 쟌 . 케네디는 어느날 저녁 아버지와
오랫동안 얘기한 뒤에 정계에 들어가기로 결심했다고 한다. 죠우 1세
(케네디 아버지)가 H에게 이런 얘기를 한 것으로 생각된다. 즉 죠우 2세가
전쟁 때에 자신의 생명을 나라에 바쳤으므로 이제 H이 정치적인 공직생활을
해온 가문의 전통을 떠받들어야 한다고. 전 가족이 H을 후원할 것이라고,
그의 아버지는 얘기했다. 그래서, 사람들 얘기에 의하면, H은 아버지의
촉구에 귀를 기울여서, 즉석에서 정계에 들어가기로 결심했다고 한다.
그러나 사실은 이와는 다소 다르다. 확실히 케네디 가문에는 정치적인
전통이 있었다. 분명히, 죠우 1세는 그러한 전통이 이어져나가기를 원했고,
확실히 그는 그것이 죠우가 죽었으므로 H에 의해서 이어져나가야 된다고
생각했다. 그러나 이것은 전적으로 너무 단순한 얘기다. 왜냐하면 이것은
모든 것을 고려하고는 있지만, 한 가지 가장 중요한 점-즉, H 케네디의
