- willy-nilly: 원하든 원하지 않든 무슨일이 일어나다
→ 'Nil'은 무언가를 원치 않는다는 뜻의 고대어인데 Will I? Nil I?가 변천되어 현재에 이름.
- fuddy-duddy: 변함이 없는 사람(someone who doesn't like change)

- mumbo jumbo: 사투리, 이해하기 힘든 말(language that cannot easily be understood, jargon)

- wishy-washy: 우유부단한, 약한(undecided, weak, not definite and clear)
ex) My boss is very wishy-washy. He has trouble deciding who should do what, and he doesn't give clear orders.
- wheeler-dealer: 수완가, 책략가(a person who is always making business deals and trying to get the best deal)

English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

Such a great writer as Shakespeare was not aware of the usage of the word "know-how". It is quite natural since it has been coined by the Americans even if the word is now in vogue all over the world. → 「둘도 없는」은 말 그대로는 irreplaceable이지만, most precious; more valuable than any thing else처럼 번역하는 것이 좋을 것이다. 「다시금 확인하고」도 「새로이 인식하다」로 해서 appreciate [or recognize] ~ again으로 한다.

→ 「～의 수」는 the number of ～ 로 좋다. A number of ～ 「많은」것과 구별할 것. The number of smokers is increasing은 옳은데 More and more people smoke같은 구문도 잘 사용된다. The number of (the) smokers로 하지 말 것. 또 Smokers are increasing은 좋지 않은 표현이다. Common 「흔히 있다/ 흔히 보여진다」대신에 popular「인기가 있는」을 사용하는 것은 잘못.
→ 「위암」 stomach cancer 또는 cancer of the stomach

(2) 날씨가 좋아서 비 올 염려는 없다고 생각하고 집을 나섰는데, 하늘이 갑자기 흐려지더니 역까지 가기도 전에 굵은 빗방울이 떨어지기 시작했다. 요즈음 날씨는 어찌나 변덕이 심한 지.......

→ 하늘이 흐려지다: the sky becomes cloudy (또는 overcast) → 굵은 빗방울: big drops of rain → 날씨가 변덕이 심하다: the weather is changeable (또는 uncertain; unsettled)

(3) “이렇게 추운 겨울은 처음이에요.” “그동안 너무 따뜻했으니, 겨울이 이 정도 추운 것은 당연하지요.”
→ 겨울이 이 정도 추운 것은 당연하다: It is only natural that winter should be as cold as this. It ～ that … 구문에 should가 쓰이면 말하는 이의 놀람, 유감 그리고 옳고 그름 따위의 판단을 나타냅니다.
→ 이렇게 추운 겨울은 처음이다: This is the coldest winter I've ever had. I don't think we've ever had such a cold winter as this.
→ 지금까지 너무 따뜻했다: It has been too warm so far.
→ 이 정도 추운: as cold as this.
(ANS) “This is the coldest winter I've ever had." "It has been too warm so far; it's only natural that winter should be as cold as this."
(3) 김박사는 여러 차례 해외 나들이를 했기 때문에 그가 외국의 풍속이나 습관 따위를 잘 알고 있다 하여 이상할 게 없다.
→ 여러 차례 해외 나들이를 했다: 이것은 지금까지의 이야기이므로 현재완료의 시제, 즉 has been abroad로 합니다.

→ 말벗이 없어서: 말할 상대가 없기 때문에 라고 보고 because she has no one to talk to (또는 with); having no one to talk to (또는 with); with no one to talk to (또는 with)등으로 표현할 수 있다.
→ 외로워하신다: 외롭게 느낀다고 직역하여 feel lonely로 하면 된다.
→ 오셨는데 의 오셨다는 come 만으로도 좋지만 come to visit (또는 see) us라고 하는 것이 좋다.
→ 어찌나 기뻐하시는지, ~할 수 없다: 너무(또는 매우) 기뻐해서 ~할 수 없다로 보고, so ~that …구문을 사용하면 된다.
→ 도저히 ~할 수 없다: cannot possibly~

10. 한국인이 지금까지 걸어온 역사적 과정이 그러했을 테지만, 종래의 한국인은 자신의 건강을 돌보는 것을 별로 중요시 해오지 않았던 것 같다.
→ 「한국인」은 여기서는 국민 전체를 말하므로 The Koreans 또는The Korean people이라고 한다. 「지금까지 걸어온 역사적 과정」은 관계대명사를 이용하여 the historical process which ~ have gone through라고 한다.
→ 「역사적 과정이 그러했을 테지만」은「아마 역사적 과정 때문이겠지만」으로 생각하고 Perhaps because of (or owing to) ~로 한다. 그리고 강조구문을 사용하여 It is perhaps because of ~ that…라고 할 수도 있다.

5. 매우 수고를 하게 하여 죄송합니다.
→「~ 하여 미안합니다/ ~해 주셔서 감사합니다」는 It was nice [kind] of+사람+to부정사를 사용해서 표현할 수도 있다.
→ So many troubles로 하지 말 것.
→ 사람의 성질을 나타내는 형용사 kind, nice, wise, stupid, foolish 등이 올 때에는 It is+형용사+of+사람+to부정사와 같은 패턴으로 한다.
(ANS) It was nice of you to go to so much trouble.
6. 시간이 충분히 있기 때문에 서둘 필요는 없지만 도중에 딴전을 부려서는 안 된다.
→ 「빈둥빈둥 시간을 보내다」는 hang about/ loiter/ hang around로 표현하고 도중에 (시간을 낭비하지 말고) 「곧바로」는 go straight to ~ 로 한다.
(ANS) There is plenty of time, so you needn't hurry. But you mustn't loiter on the way.
[比較] apt, likely, liable, prone
apt(자칫～하기 쉬운)와 likely(～함직한)는 to-부정사를 거느리는 경우 가까운 동의어가 된다.
likely는 어떤 모욕적인 말에 대해서 재치 있고 아주 날카로운 대답을 한 경우 다음처럼 말할 수 있다.
It was an apt answer; just the sort of thing that so-and-so would be likely to say.(경우에 꼭 맞는 대답이었다. 바로 아무개가 말함직한 대답이었다.)
He is apt to stammer when he is excited.(그는 흥분하면 말을 더듬기를 잘한다.)/ Cast iron is apt to break.(무쇠는 부러지기 쉽다.)
likely는 단순히 가능성을 나타내지만, 어떤 특수한 형편이나 환경에 쓰인다. 예를 들면, 11월 말경의 시카고의 날씨가 눈이 내릴 낌새를 보이는 경우, It is likely to snow today.라고 할 수 있다. 한편 apt는 Snow is apt to fall in Chicago in late November.처럼 일반적인 경향을 나타낸다.
또한 apt가 「잘하는, 재주가 있는」을 의미하는 경우에는 to-부정사를 거느리지 않고 at+동사의 -ing형을 취해서 He is apt at painting.처럼 쓰이기도 한다.
liable(자칫 ～하기 쉬운)은 부담이 될 일이거나 불리한 일을 당하기 쉬운 것을 나타낸다. liable과 apt는 뜻이 가깝기 때문에 서로 바뀌어 쓰이는 수가 있지만, liable은 주어에 대해서 부담 또는 불리함을 줄 가능성이 있는 경우에 사용되는 것이 원칙이다. We are liable to be overheard.(남이 우리의 말을 엿듣기 쉽다.)는 남이 엿듣는 것이 우리에게 불리한 것임을 표시한다.
He is apt to promise more than he can perform.에서 apt는 그의 습관적인 경향을 말하지만, 여기에 liable을 쓰면 그가 그렇게 하는 것을 부끄럽게 여기는 뜻이 포함된다. 마찬가지로 Some of the colors are liable to fade.는 퇴색하는 것이 빛깔에 손색이 되는 것을 나타낸다. 영국 현대 관용에서는 위에서 본 것처럼 liable을 사용하고 있지만 좋은 일과 언짢은 일에 두루 사용되었다. 이 용법은 현대 미국에 남아 있어 We are liable to be in Chicago next week.처럼 likely의 뜻으로 사용되고 있다. 그러나 liable은 「책임을 지는, 의무가 있는」이라는 법률적인 뜻〈Every citizen is liable for jury duty.(국민은 누구나 배심원으로 설 의무가 있다.)/ The surety is liable for the debt of his principal.(보증인은 본인의 부채를 갚을 의무가 있다.)〉에 국한해서 사용하는 것이 가장 무난하다고 말한다.
prone(～하기 쉬운)은 거의 피할 수 없는 성질이나 성벽을 암시하며 반드시 to-부정사를 취하지 않는다.

sullen은 침울하고 생각에 잠겨 말이 없는 것을 의미하고 보통 화가 난 것, 기분이 좋지 않은 것을 가리킨다.

glum은 기분이 좋지 않다든가 성미가 나빠서가 아니라, 낙담하거나 의기소침에서 오는 침묵을 강조한다.

morose는 심술궂고(sour), 비사교적으로 glum한 것을 뜻한다.

surly는 sullen, morose에 퉁명스러움(brusqueness)과 거칠음(gruffness)이 덧붙은 것을 뜻한다.

sulky는 어린애처럼 걸핏하면 성내고 불만에 차서 sullen한 것을 뜻한다.

therefore, hence는 for this reason의 뜻으로 앞선 진술에서 이끌어내는 필연적인 추론을 도입하는데 주로 쓰인다. therefore는 보통 결론을 도입하고, hence는 흔히 therefore와 바뀌어 쓰이기는 하지만, 앞선 진술을 강조한다. therefore는 특히 추리의 정확함을 그 뜻 속에 품고 있어, 논리학, 법률, 수학 따위와 격식 차리는 딱딱한 문체에 쓰인다.

이 말은 딱딱한 말이기는 하지만 therefore보다는 덜 딱딱하다.
then은 since the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이므로)의 뜻이며, 논리적인 인과관계를 나타내는 데에 쓰이는 경우, 조건문에서 결과를 표시하는 절에 주로 사용된다. 구어적인 말이다.
If A is true, then B is false.
accordingly는 in conformity with the preceding(앞선 것에 일치해서)의 뜻이며, 보통 논리적 결과 또는 인과관계를 나타내지만, 필연성보다는 결과의 자연스러움을 암시한다. consequently만큼 딱딱하지는 않은 말이다.
He said he was hungry; accordingly they shared their meager lunch with him.
so는 because the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이기 때문에), this being the case(경우가 이러하므로)의 뜻이며 구어적인 말이다. 어떤 인과관계를 가리키는 지 그 암시하는 바가 명확하지 않은 것이 보통이다.

cheap의 세가지 뜻.
* Cheap watch! 라고 하면 '시계가 싸다'라고 들리지 않고
'싸구려 시계' 즉 '품질이 좋지 않은 시계'로 들린다.
cheap은 '값이 싸다'란 뜻도 되지만 '싸구려' 또는 '저질이다.'
라는 뜻도 되기 때문이다. 그리고 '짜다' 즉 '구두쇠'라는 뜻도 있다.

'그는 어찌나 구두쇠인지 자선단체에 땡전 하나도 기부하지 않는다'란

cheap 자체가 '싸게'란 부사로 쓰이기도 한다.

Statistics show that about 25,000 foreigners are now employed by
Korean shipping firms, an explosive increase over the less than 200 on
