1) 텔레비전이 발달한 오늘날: today thank to the development of television; today when television is so much advanced
2) 가만히 앉아서 ~을 볼 수 있다: we can stay at home and watch ~
3) 외국의 동향: the trend of the world
We can stay home and see Mt. Namsan.
What a blessing it was (that) you weren't traveling on that train!
How much we owe to our parents!
ANS 1) What a blessing it is that today, thanks to the development of television, we can stay at home watching the activities of people and beauties of nature in foreign countries.
ANS 2) Today television has so much advanced, so we can stay home and learn the trends of the world as well as enjoy the beautiful nature of foreign lands.

English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

Such a great writer as Shakespeare was not aware of the usage of the word "know-how". It is quite natural since it has been coined by the Americans even if the word is now in vogue all over the world. Therefore the key of making America what it is now can be found in the trend of changing "why to do" into "how to do". Napoleon was that a fool to the question "why do you wage a war?" But he was an imperishable genius able to win so many by making standardization of the grooves of the screws which had been used in jointing and disjointing the cannons.

→ 민주주의 국가에서는: in a democracy
There arise[will]…at all times.
→ 공개토론을 통해서 해결될 수 없을 만큼 (큰 문제): so great that it cannot be solved through open discussion
→ 한 문제를 여러모로 의논할 수 있다: all sides of a problem을 주어로 삼은 수동문으로 풀어 쓸 수 있다.
Why don't you weigh the advantages of joining them against those of staying along?
ANS) In a democracy, there will be problems to be solved and changes to be made at all times. But there is no problem so great that it cannot be solved through open discussion all sides of a problem can be talked over, weighed carefully, and studied again and again. Then a final decision is reached by a vote of the majority.

→ 「전설에 따르면 ~이라고 한다」 According to legend, ~혹은 According to tradition, ~혹은 Legend has it that절.
(ANS) According to legend, the wood used to be haunted, so people would avoid it.

→ 어떻게 부르면 좋을지 망설이다: have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion
→ …라고 부르는 것도 알맞지 않다: nor is it properly called~
Chusok deeply rooted in the culture of Korea; Chusok with a special importance; have a remarkable significance
(ANS) Because there are so many levels of meaning to Chusok, foreigners often have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion. It is not the same as Thanksgiving celebrations, though it includes the thanks for the harvest and the family gathering and eating. Nor is Chusok properly called an autumn moon festival, for the more important meaning to Koreans is to be found in the veneration of the family ancestors. Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.

→ 처지와 경우에 따라: under one's circumstances; under different circumstances
→ 여러 가지 경험을 끊임없이 하면서 살다: go through various experiences; go through life, continuously experiencing all sorts of things; live continuously experiencing many things
→ 모든 일이 뜻대로 되면: if everything turned out all right as we wished
→ 예기치 못했던 엉뚱한 일: some unexpected things; some strange things
→ 사건이 터져 우리를 당황케 하다: things happen to upset us; things breakout to embarrass us
(ANS 1) We all go through life, each under his given circumstances, continuously experiencing all sorts of joy and sorrow, pain and pleasure, and so on. How good it would be if everything turned out all right as we wished, but in real life some strange things often happen to upset us in the most unexpected way.
(ANS 2) In life we all go through, each under different circumstances, various experiences of joy and sorrow, pain and pleasure, and all the other ups and downs, usually in quick succession. How wonderful it would be if everything went well the way we wished, but all too often in real life some unexpected things happen to frustrate us or to embarrass us in the most undreamed-of way.

It is only natural that winter should be as cold as this.
(ANS) "This is the coldest winter I've ever experienced.""It has been too warm so far; it's only natural that winter should be as cold as this."

It is only natural that winter should be as cold as this. It ~ that …
This is the coldest winter I've ever had. I don't think we've ever had such a cold winter as this.
It has been too warm so far.
→ 이 정도 추운: as cold as this.
(ANS) “This is the coldest winter I've ever had." "It has been too warm so far; it's only natural that winter should be as cold as this."

→ 외국의 풍속이나 습관: foreign manners and customs
→ ~을 잘 알고 있다: have a good knowledge of~
→ 이상할 게 없다: be natural; be no wonder; not surprising 등
(ANS 1) As Dr. Kim has often been abroad, it is natural that he has a good knowledge of foreign manners and customs.
(ANS 2) Mr. Kim has been abroad many times, and so it is no wonder that he should be well versed in the manners and customs of foreign countries.

→ 「한국인」은 여기서는 국민 전체를 말하므로 The Koreans 또는The Korean people이라고 한다. 「지금까지 걸어온 역사적 과정」은 관계대명사를 이용하여 the historical process which ~ have gone through라고 한다.
Perhaps because of (or owing to) ~로 한다. It is perhaps because of ~ that…
「중요시하지 않다」는 「~의 중요성을 경시한다」즉 neglect(또는 be negligent of ~) the importance; underestimate the significance로 표현한다.
(ANS 1) Perhaps because of the historical course (which) the Korean people have gone through, they seem to have so far been rather negligent of the significance of taking good care of their health.
(ANS 2) It seems that the Koreans have so far rather underestimated the importance of taking good care of their health. This is perhaps due to the course of history they have passed through. ~31

→ 잘하고(못하고)있다: be good(poor) at; be strong(weak) in; (사물을 주어로 해서) be in(out of) one's line
→ 내 경험에서 말한다면: in my experience; so far as I know from my experience
It is not necessarily so; It is not always the case
I should rather say (that)
→ 관계가 깊다: be closely connected (what); have a close relationship (to)
(ANS) I liked both English and mathematics. Though they say (that) those who are good at foreign languages are poor at mathematics, and that the reverse is also true, it is not necessarily so in my experience. I would rather say (that) these two faculties are closely connected with each other.

→ 이제까지와 같은 생활 수준: the standard of living we have had up till now[or up to the present]
→ 유지해 가다: keep up; maintain
(ANS 1) Since prices are going up rapidly, I am afraid we cannot keep up the standard of living we have had up till now.
(ANS 2) With prices soaring up these days, it would probably be impossible to maintain in the living standard we have held so far.

[比較] apt, likely, liable, prone
apt(자칫~하기 쉬운)와 likely(~함직한)는 to-부정사를 거느리는 경우 가까운 동의어가 된다.
It was an apt answer; just the sort of thing that so-and-so would be likely to say.(경우에 꼭 맞는 대답이었다.
He is apt to stammer when he is excited.(그는 흥분하면 말을 더듬기를 잘한다.)/ Cast iron is apt to break.(무쇠는 부러지기 쉽다.)
It is likely to snow today. 한편 apt는 Snow is apt to fall in Chicago in late November.
He is apt at painting.
We are liable to be overheard.(남이 우리의 말을 엿듣기 쉽다.)
He is apt to promise more than he can perform. Some of the colors are liable to fade. We are liable to be in Chicago next week. 그러나 liable은 「책임을 지는, 의무가 있는」이라는 법률적인 뜻〈Every citizen is liable for jury duty.(국민은 누구나 배심원으로 설 의무가 있다.)/ The surety is liable for the debt of his principal.(보증인은 본인의 부채를 갚을 의무가 있다.)〉에 국한해서 사용하는 것이 가장 무난하다고 말한다.
He's prone to suspect other's motives.

(~ may be ) forgiven for thinking ~/ if ~: ~해도 이해할 만하다
ex) A world in which raw power is still held in the highest respect may be forgiven if it is unimpressed with a leader so patently averse to using it.

hegemony in the nation's student movement through all these years.

In the United States and in many European countries, there is a serious problem.
What should be done with the garbage?
There is no more room for garbage.
It is not possible to burn garbage, because that pollutes the air.
So the governments are looking for ways to reduce the amount of garbage that is produced.
One way to do this is to recycle as much as possible.
Not all kinds of garbage can be recycled, of course.
The easiest things to recycle are probably glass and paper.

Yesterday evening my son came in to ask if I felt like playing ball with him.
I was trying to get important work done, and I almost said no.
Then it occurred to me that my boy would never be a seven-year-old again.
So we went out onto the front lawn.
With the sun setting, we enjoyed being together.
There was a sense of beauty about the whole experience.

Many people went outside around August 27 this year to observe the close encounter between Earth and Mars.
On August 27, when Mars was closer to Earth than ever in human history,
the one-way travel time of light was just 3 minutes and 6 seconds.
Thus, if you had turned a light toward Mars that day, it would have reached Mars in 186 seconds.
Mars was so bright that even the lights of the city didn't get in the way.
If you missed this astronomical show, you're really out of luck.
Mars will not be this close again until the year 2287.

If you were indeed to build a house, you would find it helpful to have a set of directions to guide you in its construction.
You would need to know, for example, where the walls and support beams should be placed.
When building the house of life, we also rely on a blueprint to guide us in its construction.
If you don't have such a blueprint, your life goals will constantly shift from situation to situation and you are bound to fail.
So decide what you need to do to make your dreams come true.
If you do, you'll have clear direction throughout your life.

One of the most valuable abilities you can develop is the ability to study, which is not something you study the night before an exam.
Rather, you have to learn how to study so you can independently approach a new problem and think it through to a successful solution.
Mastering a method of doing something is also an accomplishment that can only be achieved through genuine study.
Learning to study effectively is far more important than merely acquiring particular information.

In mystery books and movies, fingerprints play a big role.
The police get them from a gun left by the thief.
Then, soon the thief is in jail.
But in real life, the police rarely get prints from guns.
First of all, a smart thief won't leave his gun where it can be found.
And, even if he did, the gun doesn't leave good prints.
That is because it is usually oily.
Finally, anyone who fires a gun holds it tightly.
That also blurs the prints.
So real-life detectives have to find other kinds of clues.

Some types of animals, the jaguar, for example, have been killed off to the point that very few still exist.
A number of these rare animals live in areas where new dams are planned.
In many cases, they could become extinct.
It would be sad if we lost these animals forever.
For this reason, environmentalists work to protect animals so that they can reproduce
until their numbers increase to a safe level.
One solution is to create preserves, large areas of land or water where animals and fish are protected.

Good jugglers make juggling look so easy that it is difficult to imagine all the physics that comes into play.
Gravity has a significant effect on the number of objects juggled.
Each ball must be thrown high enough to allow the juggler time to handle the other balls.
While throwing higher gives the juggler extra time, it also increases the risk of error.
Juggling low, on the other hand, requires the juggler to catch and throw quickly, also increasing the risk of error.
The need for speed or height will change dramatically as the number of objects being juggled increases.

Restaurants require their cooks to handle food carefully to make sure that it stays fresh.
First of all, the cook must keep the kitchen clean so that no dust or dirty water comes into contact with the food.
He must keep in the refrigerator all food which can go bad.
Uncooked meat, for example, should be frozen or kept in the refrigerator in a covered bowl.
Milk, juice, and other drinks should be kept in closed bottles and kept cool.

If you get a blow-out while you are driving, you should know what to do.
A blow-out is a sudden flat tire.
It can be a very frightening experience, especially if you are traveling at high speeds.
If your car gets a blow out, the first thing to do is to hold very tightly to the steering wheel.
You can easily lose control of the car if you do not have a good hold of the steering wheel.
The next step is to get off the road.
However, you must not try to stop or turn too quickly.
After you check the traffic, you should move over to the side of the road and slow down gradually.
Then you should turn on your flashing lights so other cars can see you.

A type of artificial sand might be able to slow down beach from washing off.
Strangely, this new kind of sand is made by grinding glass.
You might think that walking barefoot on ground glass would be painful.
But it's not.
The reason is very simple.
Sand and glass are made of the same kind of material, called silicate.
When glass is ground very finely, you get a sandlike substance that is harder than real sand.
The size of the pieces can be controlled.
Larger pieces wouldn't be as easily affected by the wind and waves.
So a beach covered with artificial sand would last longer than a beach with real sand.

After many years, critical attention has finally been paid to the portion of the Miss America pageant called the swimsuit competition.
Thankfully, people are beginning to complain about this event.
In 1996, a telephone poll was conducted to determine if the swimsuit competition should remain.
Although the majority of callers voted to keep it, a good portion was critical and argued that the swimsuit competition should be eliminated.
The question will undoubtedly be raised again, and the next time the answer may well be different.
Let's hope so, because this portion of the pageant only lowers the dignity of women.

When something doesn't meet our expectations, many of us operate on the assumption,
“When in doubt, it must be someone else's fault.”
You can see this assumption in action almost everywhere you look―the car isn't working properly,
so the mechanic must have repaired it incorrectly;
your expenses exceed your income, so your husband or wife must be spending too much money.
However, blaming others takes an enormous amount of mental energy.
It makes you feel powerless over your own life, because your happiness depends on the behavior of others, which you can't control.

The pollution of sea, air, and land harms our quality of life by affecting our health.
More serious is the possibility of the end of human life itself.
We may become so developed that we kill ourselves!
Therefore, the most recent definition of development emphasizes sustainable development:
the improvement of human quality of life within the limits of a green, healthy earth.
In other words, it is development which aims to protect, not destroy, the earth's resources.
This will make sure that our present lifestyle does not harm future generations' lifestyles.
They will also be able to get fruits from the earth.

This point can be explained using the following text, “Tommy had just been given a new set of blocks.
He was opening the box when he saw his sister coming in.”
A computer would have no clue as to what is in the box, but we assume immediately that it contains Tommy's new blocks.
We do so because we know that gifts often come in boxes and that opening the box is the natural thing to do.
More important, we assume that the two sentences are connected, whereas the computer sees no reason to connect the box with the blocks.
In other words, our interpretation of this simple text is based on common knowledge and expectations that are unavailable to the computer.

Question : What do you do to keep yourself physically fit?
Tom : When I was in college I used to play sports like baseball and basketball.
But I can't do that now, so I try to play golf every weekend.
I work mostly sitting at my desk in my office, so I like to get outside and get some fresh air.
Sue :When the weather is OK, I go jogging in the early morning almost every day.
It's fun and it makes me feel fresh all day.
In the winter I don't feel safe running in the dark, so I usually jump rope and lift weights before breakfast.
Liz :I have no weight problem, but I'm not as strong as I used to be.
I'm worried about my health, to tell the truth.
Last summer I quit smoking and next month I'm going to buy an exercise machine.
I'm looking forward to that.

cover
1. to be or lie on the surface of something: The top of the mountain is covered with snow all year round.
2. to place or spread something upon, over, or in front of something in order to protect, hide, etc.: The noise was so loud that she covered her ears with her hands.
3. to include; consist of; take into account: The doctor's talk covered the complete history of medicine.
4. to travel a particular distance: I want to cover 50 miles before it gets dark.
5. to report the details of an event, e.g. for a newspaper: My editor sent me to cover the murder case.

All the forms of popular culture have one thing in common―the message that to be fashionable we must buy things.
Every time something goes out of fashion and something new comes in, it is time to get out the credit card and check book.
When we choose clothes, music, and entertainment, we think we are expressing our individuality.
In reality, we are following the fashions which are forced upon us by the small group of people who control the media and manufacturing companies.
So, being fashionable means spending money.

Like many fairy stories, the tale of Rapunzel has a deeper meaning to it.
It is a story about self-image.
Rapunzel is a young lady who lives locked up in a castle imprisoned by an old witch who continually tells her how ugly she is.
One day, a handsome prince passes by the tower and tells Rapunzel of her loveliness.
She lets down her golden locks so he may climb her hair to rescue her.
It is neither the castle nor the witch that has kept her a prisoner, but the belief in her own ugliness.
When she recognizes her beauty, she sees that she can be set free.
We all need to be aware of the witches inside ourselves that are stopping us from breaking free.
* locks: 머리채

When you're having a conversation with someone and he is angry, listen patiently.
Once you get impatient and start arguing, your position hardens, the other person's position hardens, and it becomes impossible to find a mutually agreeable solution to the issues being discussed.
So if you don't want to get into an argument, stay calm and say nothing, though you'll certainly be tempted to interrupt and respond to the person's statements.
Within a few minutes the person will use up all of his anger and energy and talk himself out.
