[比較] opposite, contrary, reverse, adverse
opposite는 위치·행동·성격 따위가 대칭적으로 대조되는 것을 암시한다.
ex) They sat at opposite ends of the table.
contrary는 opposite에 갈등·적대의 뜻이 덧붙인 것으로 대립이 공교롭게도 불리한 것을 나타낸다. 단, 사람에 적용되는 경우에는 「심술궂은, 고집센」이라는 좋지 못한 뜻을 가지고 있다.
ex) a contrary wind/ They hold contrary views.
reverse는 반대 방향으로 면하거나 움직이는 것에 쓰인다.
ex) the reverse side of a coin/ a reverse gear/ in reverse order
adverse는 한층 개인적인 적의·악의를 가지고 있는 것, 반대되는 것뿐만이 아니고 또한 대항하는 것을 암시하고, 반대 당한 것이 큰 불행을 입는 것을 강조한다. adverse fortune(역운)이라고 하면, 나쁜 운수에서 악의가 활발히 움직이고 있는 것을 암시하는 점에서 ill fortune(불운)이라고 하는 것보다 한층 나쁜 것이다.
ex) The judge rendered a decision adverse to the defendant.(판사는 피고에게 불리한 판결을 내렸다.)

be in order는 「말끔하게, 정리되어, 정돈해서」의 의미로
여기에서는 「전혀 문제가 없다」라는 뜻입니다. split the cost
of ~ 「~의 비용을 절감하다」로 to share the cost of ~와 거의
같습니다. 「관행·평소의 행동방식」은 standard practice
custom, traditional method 등으로 말할 수도 있습니다. to
begin with는 at first, at the outset, in the beginning과 거의
같으며 「처음으로, 최초로」의 관용구입니다.

Mr. West: Everything seems to be in order, except one item.
Mr. Lee: What is that?
Mr. West: It's about splitting the cost of R&D. You say it
should be 50-50, but I have a different suggestion.

thinking of something different, then I'm sure we can think
it over.
Mr. West: What if we specify the areas and subjects for R&D
in more detail, to begin with, and then talk about each

알아둘 일
연구개발비용의 분담에 관한 대화인데 종합비용에 대한
분담보다는 우선 세목을 정하고 그 세목에 대한 비용을
분담하자고 하는 반론이 나온 것입니다. 총론보다는 각론을
중시하는 느낌인데, 서구적인 발상에서는 구체적인 세목이 있고
나서야 비로소 의논이 가능합니다. 한국적인 발상인 총론에 우선
찬성하고 그리고 나서 각론을 의논한다 라는 것은 조금 방식이
다릅니다. 서로간의 의견에 접근하기 위해서는 구체적으로
의논하는 편이 받아드리기도 쉽고 수습도 잘 됩니다.
