The legal significance is that a 1977 Supreme Court ruling -- the
Illinois Brick Company vs. the State of Illinois -- declared that
indirect purchasers of goods could not recover damages in class-action
antitrust cases.

컴퍼니와 일리노이주간 소송에서 제품을 간접적인 방법으로 구입한 사람은
반독점 집단소송에서 배상을 받을 수 없다고 판시했기 때문이다.
Since 1977, however, 18 states including California and New York have
passed laws allowing indirect purchasers to qualify for triple damages
in antitrust class actions.
이같은 간접구매자의 배상제외규정은 절대적인 것은 아니다. 대법원의
판결뒤에도 캘리포니아주와 뉴욕주를 비롯해 18개 주에서 간접구매자도 반독
점 집단소송에서 3배의 배상을 받을수 있도록 허용하는 법률을 제정했기
때문이다.
