행복이란 크고 아름다운 보석처럼 그것을 추구하는 것이 모두 소용없는 짓이고,
그것을 얻으려는 모든 노력이 허망할 정도로 아주 특이하고 귀한 것이 아니다.
행복이란 작고 흔한 보석들이 엮어져 보기 좋고 우아한 하나로 이루어진 것이다.
행복이란 평범한 인생길에 흩어져 있는 작은 기쁨들을 즐기는 것이므로 굉장히
신나는 즐거움만을 열심히 추구하려고 하면 지나쳐버리기 쉽다.
An international opera company was touring Mexico when it was set upon
by bandits and brought before the notorious Pancho Villa. The soprano
demanded that she be released as a world treasure. "I am a prima donna,"
she sniffed.
"Prima donna?" the infamous bandit sneered. "Prove it! Sing for me!"
"Sing? Now?" she said, looking at him with disdain. "Without accompaniment
or payment? In this filthy camp? To a vulgar man like you? I'd rather die!"
"Release her!" Villa told his men. "She's a prima donna all right."
국제 오페라단이 멕시코를 관광하다가 산적들에게 공격을 받아 악명 높은
판쵸 빌라에게 끌려갔다. 소프라노는 그녀가 세계적인 보물이므로 석방해줄
것을 요구했다. "나는 프리마 돈나요." 그녀가 코웃음을 치며 말했다.
"프리마 돈나라고?" 악명 높은 산적이 비웃듯 말했다. "증명해봐! 내 앞에서
노래를 해봐!"
"노래를 하라고? 지금?" 그녀는 경멸하는 표정으로 그를 바라보며 말했다.
"반주도 없이, 돈도 안 받고? 이 지저분한 캠프에서? 당신같이 천박한 사람에게?
차라리 죽겠다!"
"그녀를 석방시켜!" 빌라가 부하들에게 말했다. "그녀는 진짜 프리마 돈나야."
A young man or young woman somehow catches ideas that are in the air, but
finds that these ideas are anathema in the particular milieu in which he
or she lives. It easily seems to the young as if the only milieu with
which they are acquainted were representative of the whole world. They can
scarcely believe that in another place or another set the views which they
dare not avow for fear of being thought utterly perverse would be accepted
as the ordinary commonplaces of the age. Thus through ignorance of the
world a great deal of unnecessary misery is endured, sometimes only in
youth, but not infrequently throughout life.
젊은이들은 어쩌다 근거 없는 사상을 받아들이는데, 이런 사상들이 젊은이가
살고 있는 특정한 사회에서 반감을 불러일으키는 경우가 있다. 젊은이들은
그들이 알고 있는 사회가 전 세계를 대변한다고 생각하기 쉽다. 변태라고
여겨질 것이 두려워 공공연히 말하지 못했던 견해들이 다른 지역이나 환경에서는
상식으로 받아들여진다는 것을 그들은 알지 못한다. 그리하여 세상에 대한 무지
때문에 불필요한 불행을 참아내야 하는데, 젊은 시절에만 그런 경우도 있지만,
평생 그런 경우도 흔하다.
There are rare instances when justice almost ceases to be an abstract
conception. Reward or punishment are meted out quite independent of
human interference. At such times, justice acts like a living force.
When we use a phrase like 'it serves him right', we are, in part,
admitting that a certain set of circumstances has enabled justice to
act of its own accord.
드물긴 하지만 정의라는 것이 구체적인 것으로 작용하는 때가 있다.
인간이 전혀 간여하지 않은 상태에서 상과 벌이 주어지는 것이다. 그럴 때
정의는 살아있는 강력한 존재처럼 작용한다. 우리가 "그것 참 잘됐다."라는
말을 할 때, 어떤 상황들이 합세하여 정의가 스스로 작용했다는 것을
어느 정도 인정하는 것이다.

A computer salesman dies and meets St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.
St. Peter tells the salesman that he can choose between heaven and hell.
First he shows the man heaven, where people in white robes play harps
and float around. "Dull," says the salesman.
Next, St. Peter shows him hell: toga parties, good food and wine,
and people looking as though they're having a fine time.
"I'll take hell," he says.
He enters the gates of hell and is immediately set upon by a dozen
demons, who poke him with pitchforks.
"Hey," the salesman demands as Satan walks past, "what happened to the
party I saw going on?"
"Ah," Satan replies. "You must have seen our demo."
컴퓨터 세일즈맨이 죽은 후 천국 문에서 베드로를 만난다.
베드로는 세일즈맨에게 천국과 지옥을 선택할 수 있다고 말한다.
베드로는 먼저 천국을 보여주는데 그곳에는 하얀 옷을 입은 사람들이
하프를 연주하며 이리저리 둥둥 떠다니고 있다. "재미가 없네." 세일즈맨이
말한다.
다음에 베드로는 지옥을 보여준다. 예복을 입은 사람들의 파티, 좋은 음식과
술, 재미있게 놀고 있는 듯한 사람들을 보자 "지옥을 택하겠어요."라고
그가 말한다.
그가 지옥 문을 들어서자 즉시 10여명의 악마들이 달려들어 쇠갈퀴로 찌른다.
"이봐요," 세일즈맨은 옆으로 지나가는 사탄에게 따진다.
"내가 보았던 파티는 어찌된 거요?"
"아하," 사탄이 대답한다. "우리의 선전용 견본을 본 게로군."
