With the global population expected to rise to 9 billion within 50 years, GM technology is giving hope to people around the world.
They think GM crops can offer bigger harvests, better quality, and less need for spraying poisons to kill insects.
Not surprisingly, the use of GM seeds has quickly become popular among farmers.
More than fifty percent of all crops planted in the U.S.
are from GM seeds, including tomatoes, corn, and potatoes.

All desert plants have tricks for dealing with great heat and long periods of dryness, or drought.
Many small desert plants appear on the landscape only when heavy rains fall.
These plants “wait out” periods of drought underground.
They exist for months or even years as seeds buried in the soil.
When rains come, these seeds spring to life.
The young plants quickly grow into adult plants and, in turn, throw out a new bunch of seeds before they die.
All this happens within a few weeks.

The seeds of most plants are very durable.
They often travel long distances and survive harsh weather before they finally take root in soil.
Grape seeds are one good example.
If left on the vine, grapes will dry up and become raisins.
The raisins will eventually drop off the vine, and some of the seeds will be driven into the soil by rain or by animals walking over them.
Many grapes are grown for wine, so they are picked from the vine when ripe.
They are then boiled or crushed to extract their juice.
The farmers then use whatever remains of the grapes as fertilizer.
Amazingly, many grape seeds survive the crushing and boiling.
When they are inside the soil, the grape seeds take root and grow.

In everything you do in your family, you should keep in mind the miracle of the Chinese bamboo tree.
After the seed for this amazing tree is planted, you see nothing, absolutely nothing, for four years except for a tiny shoot coming out of a bulb.
During those four years, all the growth is underground in a root structure that spreads deep and wide in the earth.
But then in the fifth year the Chinese bamboo tree grows up to eighty feet!
Many things in family life are like the Chinese bamboo tree.
If you're patient and keep working, that “fifth year” will come, and you will be astonished at the growth and change you see taking place.

Success often bears within itself the seed of destruction, for it may very
well cut the author off from the material that was its occasion.
He enters a new world. He is made much of. He must be almost super-human if
he is not captivated by the notice taken of him by the great and remains
insensible to the attentions of beautiful women. He grows accustomed to
another way of life, probably more luxurious than that to which he has
been used, and to people who have more of the social graces than those with
whom he has associated before. They are more intellectual and their superficial
brilliance is engaging. How difficult it is for him then to move freely still
in the circles with which he has been familiar and which have given him his
subjects!

As usual the peasants are busy scattering grain seeds.

Goats like eating weeds. In fact, they prefer weeds to grass. So they
are very useful for controlling weeds without using chemicals. The
digestive system of the goat is different from that of the sheep or the
cow. Weed seeds cannot pass through the goat's body, and so they cannot
grow into new weeds. Farmers don't like using chemicals to control weeds
because such poisons can kill wild animals or even pets, like dogs. A
company in Montana even rents out goats to eat weeds.

An old Greek myth tells the story of a farmer. The farmer sowed seeds
and reaped what he sowed. But he was not content with his own crops, and
he stole crops from nearby farmers. The Greek god, zeus, was very angry
at this. So he turned the farmer into an ant. However, the farmer's
character remained the same. Like the farmer, the ant still went from
field to field, storing up food for itself.

As a tool of destruction, the smallpox virus is ideal.
Simply exposing people to the bug in its natural state, without significantly manipulating or processing it, is sufficient to seed an epidemic.
Unlike anthrax, smallpox is highly contagious (just one infected person could cause the virus to radiate from a family to a neighborhood to a city in a matter of months), and smallpox cannot be treated effectively once symptoms begin (30% of those infected will die).
The vaccine is 100% effective, but only in protecting against the disease before exposure.

Although studies show that inoculation can prevent infection if given up to four days after exposure, by the time the first symptoms appear - fever, headache and rash, which begin at least two weeks after exposure - it is too late.

What forms of life were able to make such a drastic change in lifestyle
? The traditional view of the first terrestrial organisms is based on
megafossils ― relatively large specimens of essentially whole plants
and animals. Vascular plants, related to modern seed plants and ferns,
left the first comprehensive megafossil record. Because of this, it has
been commonly assumed that the sequence of terrestrialization reflected
the evolution of modern terrestrial ecosystems. In this view, primitive
vascular plants first colonized the margins of continental waters,
followed by animals that fed on the plants, and lastly by animals that
preyed on the plant-eaters. Moreover, the megafossils suggest that
terrestrial life appeared and diversified explosively near the boundary
between the Silurian and the Devonian periods, a little more than 400
million years ago.

In the world of birds, bill design is a prime example of evolutionary
fine-tuning. Shorebirds such as oystercatchers use their bills to pry
open the tightly sealed shells of their prey, hummingbirds have
stilettolike bills to probe the deepest nectar-bearing flowers, and
kiwis smell out earthworms thanks to nostrils located at the tip of
their beaks. But few birds are more intimately tied to their source of
sustenance than are crossbills. Two species of these finches, named for
the way the upper and lower parts of their bills cross, rather than meet
in the middle, reside in the evergreen forests of North America and feed
on the seeds held within the cones of coniferous trees.

The efficiency of the bill is evident when a crossbill locates a cone.
Using a lateral motion of its lower mandible, the bird separates two
overlapping scales on the cone and exposes the seed. The crossed
mandibles enable the bird to exert a powerful biting force at the bill
tips, which is critical for maneuvering them between the scales and
spreading the scales apart. Next, the crossbill snakes its long tongue
into the gap and draws out the seed. Using the combined action of the
bill and tongue, the bird cracks open and discards the woody seed
covering and swallows the nutritious inner kernel. This whole process
takes but a few seconds and is repeated hundreds of times a day.
겹쳐있는 scale(솔방울껍질에 있는 비늘모양의 각 조각들)을 분리시켜서 씨를

The bills of different crossbill species and subspecies vary ― some are
stout and deep, others more slender and shallow. As a rule, large-billed
crossbills are better at securing seeds from large cones, while
small-billed crossbills are more deft at removing the seeds from small,
thin-scaled cones. Moreover, the degree to which cones are naturally
slightly open or tightly closed helps determine which bill design is the
best.

Australopithecus robustus were more heavily built ― more "robust" in
anthropological terms ― than their successors. They had broad faces,
heavy jaws, and massive crushing and grinding teeth that were used for
eating hard fruits, seeds, and fibrous underground plant parts. They
walked upright, which would have allowed them to carry and use tools.
Australopithecus robustus
Most experts had previously believed that Home habilis
were able to supplant Australopithecus robustus because the former's
ability to use tools gave them an innate superiority. The discovery that
Australopithecus robustus also used tools means that researchers will
have to seek other explanations for their extinction. Perhaps their
reliance on naturally occurring plants led to their downfall as the
climate became drier and cooler, or perhaps Homo habilis, with their
bigger brains, were simply able to make more sophisticated tools.
Australopithecus robustus

Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those
rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and
costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be
provided for performances, and when the entire community did not
participate, a clear division was usually made between the "acting area"
and the "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, and, since
considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the
enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task.

Later in the fall, the people picked the rest of the corn. They saved
the best of the harvest for seeds or for trade, with the remainder eaten
right away or stored for later use in underground reserves. With
appropriate banking of the extra food, the Mandans protected themselves
against the disaster of crop failure and accompanying hunger.

The women planted another staple, squash, about the first of June, and
harvested it near the time of the green corn harvest. After they picked
it, they sliced it, dried it, and strung the slices before they stored
them. Once again, they saved the seed from the best of the year's crop.
The Mandans also grew sunflowers and tobacco ; the latter was the
particular task of the older men.
