I recall watching Das Boot as originally distributed in the U.S.―in German, with English subtitles.
It was a fabulous movie, and I thought the actors' native German language contributed substantially to the feeling of compelling unreality that gave the movie such a powerful effect.
I enthusiastically took friends to see it again some months later―after it had gotten popular and was dubbed into English
―and found that the dubbing had stripped much of the movie's dramatic power.
Exiting the theater, I didn't have the same remarkable feeling I'd had with the original,
when I'd felt like I was a German sailor escaping a steel-walled watery tomb.

[John's Diary]
Most of those in line looked like students enjoying their
vacation. Further up the road, I could see Jill in front of
the ticket box looking at her watch impatiently and biting
her lips as if to swear she would kill me. I sighed. I
definitely knew what was about to come my way. Jill wouldn't
stop yelling and grumbling. I promised her not to be late
again and begged for mercy, like a dog. I said God would
strike me down if I was lying, but she wouldn't believe me.
The second showing of the movie had already started and we
were denied admission. I had a real hell of a day. Plan ahead
John. Good night.
1. Further up the road:
I saw him further down the road.
3. Biting her lips as if to swear:
He rolled up his sleeves as if to physically chastise them.
4. Come my way: 내 길로 오는 거니까, 내게 닥칠 것이라는 말입니다.
I knew a steak of bad lucks would come my way.
5. Grumbling: Grumble
6. God would strike me down if I was lying:
7. The second showing of the movie:
8. We were denied admission:
We were denied access.
9. Hell of a day: Hell of something
I met a hell of a girl.

Mrs.Kane:Did you see the movie, Freedom? It's a newly released movie.
Mrs.Smith:No. Was it interesting?
Mrs.Kane:Yes, it was. It's an absolute must.
Mrs.Smith:Really? What's it about?
Mrs.Kane:It is about an innocent man who is falsely accused of murder
and is sentenced to 10-year imprisonment.
Mrs.Smith:Does he serve all the 10 years?
Mrs.Kane:He serves most of the 10-year term, but he is finally
released thanks to his wife's sacrifices and efforts.
Mrs.Smith:An interesting new movie…! I think I'll have to obtain a
release from my domestic chores and catch that film.
<어구풀이>
an absolute must:필수사항.
be accused of:∼으로 기소되다.
sentence:언도내리다.
domestic chores:허드렛일.
catch a film:영화 보러가다.
