S2 : I think the last one is the topic sentence. By the way, what is the main idea of the third paragraph?

I was working as a short-order cook at two restaurants in the same neighborhood.
On a Saturday night, I was finishing up the dinner shift at one restaurant and hurrying to report to work at the second place.
But I was delayed because one table kept sending back an order of hash browns, insisting they were too cold.
I replaced them several times, but still the customers were dissatisfied.
When I was able to leave, I raced out the door and arrived at my second job.
A server immediately handed me my first order.
“Make sure these hash browns are hot,” she said,
“because these people just left a restaurant down the street that kept serving them cold ones."

The great sin, he insists, is that the books teach abstract theory first and

Mankind, ever since there have been civilized communities, have been confronted with problems of two different kinds.
On the one hand, there has been the problem of mastering natural forces; mankind have tried to acquire the knowledge and skill required to produce tools and weapons and to encourage nature in the production of useful animals and plants.
This problem, in the modern world, is dealt with by science and scientific technique, and experience has shown that in order to deal with it adequately it is necessary to train a large number of rather narrow specialists.
But there is a second problem, less precise, and by some mistakenly regarded as unimportant I mean the problem of how best to utilize our command over the forces of nature.
This includes such burning issues as democracy versus dictatorship, capitalism versus socialism, free speculation versus authoritarian dogma.
On such issues the laboratory can give no decisive guidance.
The kind of knowledge that gives most help in solving such problems a wide survey of human life as they appear in history.

[John's Diary]
After parking the car, I ran for the nearby subway station. I
didn't have a fare card with me, so I put 400 Won into the
slot of the automatic ticket vending machine and pushed the
button. But, nothing happened. I thought the damn machine was
out of order and had eaten my money, so I gave it a real hard
kick. A station attendant came up and scolded me saying the
fare had been raised to 450 Won long ago. How embarrassing. I
bought a ticket and slid through the turnstile. I found a
train already leaving. Damn, I missed the train by a second.
I didn't have a fare card with me 처럼 with me를 쓴 것은
2. Slot: Slot
3. The damn machine was out of order: Order
4. Gave it a real hard kick: 찬다고 하면 그냥 kick을 쓰지요.
take, have에 붙여 씁니다.
Push를 이런 형태로 바꾼다면 give it a push가 되겠지요. Look할
것도 take a good look하지요.
5. Station attendant came up:
Something came up. I won't be able to meet at 7.
6. Long ago: Long time ago
7. Slid: slide
8. Turnstile:
9. Missed the train by a second: 무슨무슨 차이로 할 때 by를
간발의 차이로는 by a hair('s breadth) 또는 by a
whisker를 쓰지요.
I missed the train by a hair.
I got on the plain by a hair.

dissociation 1. the act of separating or state of being separated. 2. the separation of a
molecule into two or more fragments (atoms, molecules, ions, or free radicals) produced
by the absorption of light or thermal energy or by solvation. 3. in psychology, a defense
mechanism in which a group of mental processes are segregated from the rest of a
person's mental activity in order to avoid emotional distress, as in the dissociative
disorders (q.v.), or in which an idea or object is segregated from its emotional
significance; in the first sense it is roughly equivalent to splitting, in the second, to
isolation. 4. a defect of mental integration in which one or more groups of mental
processes become separated off from normal consciousness and, thus separated, function
as a unitary whole.

Morland : Chipmunk, your spoon.
Catherine : (자신이 풀고 있는 수식을 보고) Oh.
Morland : Your spoon, IT'S ON THE FLOOR.
Catherine : Oh !
Waitress : ARE YOU READY TO ORDER ?
Morland : Uh,yes. I think the uh,the usual,please.
Catherine : No, I'll have the cup of coffee and a corn muffin,
please (머리를 만지면서) Ow.
Morland : Darling, that is your usual.
Catherine : Oh...well, I'll have that then.
Waitress : Okay.

Now, WHICH ONE OF THESE DO YOU LIKE BEST?
Catherine : (수상하게) Is this a personality test?
Morland : Um, it's a sort of surprise.
Catherine : They're all the same.

The second potential problem is the gradual emergence of pay TV,
or "video on demand." In the near future, consumers may be able to
order any movie over a cable, satellite or phone network.
Why buy a DVD player and discs when you can dial up a blockbuster
film at any time?
