On September 1, 1973, a small submersible, the Pisces III, was
rescued from 1,580 feet below sea level. Two men had been trapped
inside for 3 days, after losing control of the craft and losing
radio contact with their surface ship.
* submersible = 잠수정.
* below sea level = 수심(바다 표면으로부터의 깊이)
* lose control of ~ = ~를 통제(조종)하지 못하게되다.
* losing radio contact with = ~로부터 (통신) 연락이 끊기다.
* surface ship = 물위에 떠 있는 모선

Melting glaciers may account for the rise in sea level that
has taken place during this century.

A swamp between two seas, the Okefenokee Swamp in
Florida lies in a basin 120 feet above sea level.

Gorillas live in African forests high above sea level.

When the Spanish conqueror Pizarro transferred the capital of Peru from a site in the mountains 11,000 feet above sea level to lowland Lima,
it wasn't just for a change of scenery.
The Spanish conquerors observed that domestic animals taken to the mountains failed to reproduce.
And for over 50 years after the Spanish brought their wives and settled in the Andes,
no Spanish children were born in any of the higher altitudes.
The Indians, however, were fertile in the same climate.
The difference was that over the 9,000 years that the Indians had lived in the Andes,
they had developed enlarged lungs, a high red blood cell count, and lower blood pressure,
all of which made it possible for them to live normal lives at high altitudes.

Many are surprised to learn that this place is nearly twice the size of the United States.

Great rivers of ice, called glaciers, push down the mountains.
This place is the storehouse of about 85 percent of the total world supply of ice.
The icecap is very thick, averaging nearly 8,000 feet.
At one spot, scientists have found the distance from the surface to the rock underneath the ice to be more than 13,000 feet.
If this great volume of ice were to melt, the volume of the world oceans would increase, and sea level would rise.
Extreme atmospheric changes would have to take place for this to happen.

The edge of the sea is a strange and beautiful place. All through the
long history of Earth it has been an area of unrest. Not only do the
tides advance and retreat in their eternal rhythms, but the level of the
sea itself is never at rest. It rises or falls as the glaciers melt or
grow. Today a little more land may belong to the sea, tomorrow a little
less.
