When I first opened “Body Shop” in 1976
my only object was to earn enough to feed my children.
Today “Body Shop” is a company rapidly growing all around the world.
In the years since I began I have learned a lot.
Much of what I have learned will be found in this book.
It says about how to run a successful business.
It's not a normal business book, nor is it just about my life.
The message is that to succeed in business you have to be different.
In business, as in life, you need to enjoy yourself,
to have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the unexpected things.

A woman has an idea for a small business to lift her and her family out of poverty.
She needs a little money to begin the business.
She goes to a bank to borrow the money, and a banker interviews her.
At this bank, the borrower must meet three necessary conditions: honesty, capacity, and property.
That is, if this woman wants to borrow money from the bank, she must show that she is honest, is able to run her business, and owns something valuable.

Several factors contribute to the poverty prevalent in some Latin American countries.
First of all, many people there are poor as a result of overpopulation.
Some traditions still strong in Latin America are conducive to a high birth rate.
In addition to religious beliefs and the common idea that there will always be food on the table for an extra mouth,
people continue to feel that many children can provide more help in the fields or family business as well as more support later for elderly parents.
A second factor causing poverty in Latin America is governmental corruption.
Many countries are run by dictators who act according to their own interests.

Joseph Schumpeter was an unusual economist. Most economists have tried
to reduce business cycles, but Schumpeter believed that constant change
was the strength of capitalism. In constantly developing new products
and new ideas, entrepreneurs cause the destruction of old products and
ideas. Schumpeter thought that this process, which he called creative
destruction, causes the business cycles that are part of a capital
system. He believed that business cycles are helpful to the economy in
the long run.

For example, CEO Park, who had run a food processing business in Imsil, Jeollabuk-do, gave up his inheritance due to retained earnings and chose to close the business.

For perspective on this issue, meet Phil Greer, one of the name partners
in the San Francisco-New York venture firm of Weiss, Peck & Greer.
(Phil
Greer)
A generation ago, in the early 1970s, Greer was one of the early
investors in a struggling young company called Federal Express, then run
by a 20-something entrepreneur, Frederick W. Smith, who had the brash
idea of delivering mail and packages overnight.
Smith had already burned through two substantial rounds of funding in
building his fleet of airplanes. Though the business indicators looked
good, Federal Express's coffers were empty. And it was a day when people
clung to the quaint idea that a company had to show a profit to go
public.
Smith embarked on what became a desperation mission. He gave up half his
company for $4 million, a sum that seems trivial today. Greer, who had
invested in both earlier rounds, stayed with Federal Express for what
became a very lucrative investment for the VC firm. ``I was traveling to
the board meetings fairly often, and I could see things turning
around,'' he says now.
Here's the kicker: Greer still holds some of the original stock from
that round, known as a ``down round'' in VC parlance. ``I hold stock a
long time,'' he explained the other day at a Weiss, Peck & Greer
partners meeting at the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley.

One way to consider how this works is to examine one deal -- that of
Quantum3D, which produces serviceable but relatively unsexy chips for the
video gaming and training industries.
The story begins last spring, when Quantum3D's vice president of business
development, Smith, happened to read a magazine article about Offroad,
which was then aggressively publicizing itself.
Smith dashed off an e-mail to ``info@offroad.com,'' the kind of missive
that ordinarily falls through the cracks of big e-mail systems. But an
Offroad vice president got back in touch with him. Two Offroad execs
trekked down to Quantum3D's South San Jose plant.

With venture backing already from Chase Ventures, Charter Ventures and a
fund run by its acting CEO, Silicon Valley veteran Gordon Campbell,
Quantum3D could have raised money elsewhere. But the Quantum3D people
liked Offroad's pitch.

B:That's true. The secret of my success lies in the fact that I stood
on my feet at an early age.
A:Really? Did you stand on your feet when you were very young?
B:That's right.
A:Oh, you mean you could walk at a tender age and made the walls of
your house messy with all kinds of graffiti? That's why you decided to
run a wallpaper business!
B:Oh, no, no, no! I mean I learned to be independent of my parents
when young.
