But there remained some terrible diseases for which no microbe could be
incriminated : scurvy, pellagra, rickets, beriberi. Then it was
discovered that these diseases were caused by the lack of vitamins, a
trace substance in the diet. The diseases could be prevented or cured by
consuming foods that contained the vitamins. And so in the decades of
the 1920's and 1930's, nutrition became a science and the vitamin
hunters replaced the microbe hunters.
그러나 어떤 미생물도 관련이 없는 심각한 병들(괴혈병, 펠라그라, 구루병,
각기병 등)이 아직도 남아있었다. 그리고 이 병들은 식사에서 미량물질인
비타민의 결핍에 의해서 발생된다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 그 병들은 그러한
비타민을 포함하는 음식을 섭취함으로써 예방되거나 치료될 수 있었다.
그래서 1920년대와 1930년대에 영양학은 하나의 과학이 되었고 비타민
탐구가들은 미생물 탐구가들을 대치하게 되었다.

[生] Rickets (곱사병)

rickets (구루병) 비타민 D의 결핍이 원인으로 정상적인 뼈 형성이 장애되는 것으로, 특히
젖먹이, 유아에서 자주 볼 수 있다. 근육운동에 의하여 뼈의 굴곡이 생기며, 골단, 골연골부
에 결절상의 종창을 볼 수 있으며, 천궁의 폐쇄가 늦어 근육통, 두부 발한 등을 특징적으로
볼 수 있다. 부갑상선 기능이 정상이면, 특수한 식물 섭취와 비타민 D 투여 및 일광욕에 의
하여 치유된다.
