means by which he accedes to it.

A great part of our lives is occupied in reverie, and the more imaginative
we are the more varied and vivid this will be. How many of us could face
having our reveries automatically registered and set before us?
We should be overcome with shame. We should cry that we could not really
be as mean, as wicked, as petty, as selfish, as obscene, as snobbish,
as vain, as sentimental, as that. Yet surely our reveries are as much
part of us as our actions, and if there were a being to whom our inmost
thoughts were known we might just as well be held responsible for them
as for our deeds. Men forget the horrible thoughts that wander through
their own minds, and are indignant when they discover them in others.
우리 인생의 상당 부분이 몽상에 잠겨있고 상상력이 풍부할수록 몽상은 다양하고
생생하다. 우리의 몽상들이 자동적으로 기록되어 우리 앞에 펼쳐진다면 그것을
직면할 수 있는 사람이 얼마나 될까?
수치감 때문에 꼼짝 못하게 될 것이다. 우리가 그처럼 치사하고, 사악하고,
째째하고, 이기적이고, 음탕하고, 속물적이고, 허영에 차있고, 감상적이지
않다고 소리칠 것이다. 하지만 진정 몽상의 내용들이 행동만큼 우리의 부분을
이루고 있으므로, 만일 우리의 깊은 생각들을 알고 있는 존재가 있다면
우리는 행위에 대해서처럼 몽상의 내용에 대해 책임을 져야 할 것이다.
인간들은 자신의 마음 속에 방황하는 끔찍스런 생각들은 잊고 다른 사람에게서
그런 것을 발견하면 분개한다.
