Former first lady Imelda Marcos Wednesday abandoned her
second bid for the Philippines presidency, triggering a
scramble for her support among 10 candidates still in the
running. She said she was quitting to avoid any violence in
the May 11 balloting, following reports by poll monitors they
may be forced to declare elections in some parts of the
country void due to expected rampant cheating and violence.
President Fidel Ramos denied his administration pressured her
to back out by threatening to freeze her out of more than 500
million dollars of her late husband's Swiss bank accounts
which are the subject of litigation here.
"To save the Filipino people from the ultimate injustice of
a possible bloody election, I, Imelda Romualdez Marcos now
withdraw from the May 11, 1998 presidential election," the
teary-eyed 68-year-old widow announced to reporters outside
an anti-graft court here.
"That could be part of it," she later said when asked if
she was opting out because the government may not relinquish
its rival claim on the Swiss funds.
