seized the royal hair and proceeded to scold him severely. So runs the story.
Whether it is truth or legend we cannot confirm.
전해 내려오는 얘기에 의하면 앨프리드 대왕이 한때 가난한 농부의
집에서 은신했다고 한다. 선량한 농부의 아내는 그의 신분을 모르고있어서
겉으로 보기에 아무것도 하지 않는 이 사람을 위해 거의 시간을 보내지
않았다. 왜냐하면 앨프리드는 자신의 시간을 난로불을 바라보면서 덴마크군을
물리칠 추가계획에 대해서 생각하면서 보냈기 때문이었다. 어떤 볼일이
생기자, 이 선량한 아내는 난로불 앞에서 굽고있는 빵 몇개에 그의 주의를
환기시키고, 자기가 없는 동안에 주의해서 살펴보아야 한다고 그에게 말했다.
오호통재라! 이 영국왕은 너무도 자신의 생각에 몰두해서 그 선량한 아내가
돌아와 보니 그 빵은 거의 다 타버리고 몇 조각 밖에 남아있지 않았다.
그러자, 화가 난 그 여인은 왕의 머리채를 붙잡고 그를 호되게 꾸짖었다.
얘기의 내용은 이렇다. 이것이 사실인지 전설인지는 확인할 수 가 없다.
