There is no doubt that our education does not meet high standards in such
basic skills as mathematics and language. And we realize that our
youngsters are ignorant of Latin, put Mussolini in the same category as
Dostoevski and cannot recite the Periodic Table by heart. Would we,
however, prefer to fill the developing minds of our children with
hundreds of geometry problems or the names of all the rivers in the
world? Do we really want to frustrate their opportunities for
self-expression ?
우리 교육이 수학과 언어같은 기본 과목에 있어 높은 수준을 충족시키지
못하고 있다는 건 의심할 여지가 없다. 또한 우리는 어린이들이 라틴어에
무지하고, 뭇솔리니와 도스토에프스키를 같은 범주로 여기며, 주기율표를
외우지 못한다는 것을 알고 있다. 그렇지만 애들의 성장하는 머리 속에 수많은
기하학 문제와 세계의 강 이름으로 채우기를 더 원할 건가? 진정 그들의
