stand to reason; (=be clear and logical) ~은 당연하다
It stands to reason that if he never prepares his lessons he is not going to make
good progress.

He had good reason to get anry with me.
He might well get angry with me.
It was natural that he should get angry with me.

The notion that students are not sufficiently involved in their
education is one reason for the recent surge of support for
undergraduate research.

reason
reason+prep. :: I reasoned with him on the matter.
reason+wh. :: Let's reason whether your answer is correct or not.
reason+that :: We reasoned that he was guilty.

실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
I had given weekly lectures.
I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. The weekly trip to Chunchon was tiring, but I had taken the job out of courtesy, because I could not decline the honor when Sisters Choo and Kim had taken the trouble to come to see me. Besides I had my own personal reason.

→ 그 이상으로: what is more; much more than that
→ 성숙한: mature; fully developed; grown-up
(ANS 1) Of course that is partly because we are physically grown up, but perhaps another bigger reason is that we now have a mature eye of adults.
(ANS 2) We can attribute these experiences to the fact that we are grown up in body and more specifically, that we've come to have mature inner eyes.

[比較] what ever, whatever
What ever can it mean?(대체 무슨 말이냐?), What ever shall we do?(대체 어떻게 해야 할까?)
(b) 관계사: whatever는 복합관계사 what의 강조형으로, all that, any(thing) that(~인 것은 모두, ~인 것은 무엇이나)를 의미한다.
Eat whatever you like./ Whatever is left over is yours.
Whatever request you make will be granted.(네가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든 들어주겠다.)
형용사로 쓰이는 경우 더 한층 강조하기 위해 any, no 따위로 수식된 명사 다음에 자리를 잡아, for any reason whatever(여하한 이유로든지)처럼 할 수 있다. for whatever reason보다 뜻이 강하다.
I have no plans whatever.
Whatever happens, we'll meet here tonight./ Whatever man told you that, it is not true.

I have every reason to believe that this will not work out.

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.
You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

A source at the BOK explained that the reason the rate has lowered is
that as interest rate levels have been falling, the credit crunch
in the capital market has been mitigated, and marginal companies
have been put in order.

Japan insists that its exclusive economic zone(EEZ) begins at Diao Yu Island
(Senkaku Island in Japanese), so Korea cannot engage in fishing there. It has
little reason to back its claim, though.
The area is well known as the place where China and Japan are asserting
respectively as their own territory. Technically, the area where one seized
Korean fishing boat was working belonged to China. Therefore, China rather
than Japan is the country that Korea should answer to.

2.Did he tell you that was the reason?

That's not my only reason for being here.

That's the only reason you're reading it?

I understand you're pissed.
=I know you have a reason to be angry.

For some reason a good thing will happen today.
= Something tells me that a good thing will happen today.
= For some reason I feel like something good will happen today.

She invented that reason to make you stay.

lose sight of
- forget, fail to see
Don't lose sight of the main reason that you are planning to go on the business trip.

stand to reason
- make sense, be logical
If he told a lie about that it stands to reason that he will probably lie to you about other things too.

within reason
- sensible, reasonable
I think that within reason you should be able to have as much time off as you want.

One reason is that the yarm is carefully selected for quality.

That's the second reason. The yarn is twisted and woven very tightly in this fabric.

I want my tombstone to say that I made a difference somewhere.
I mean, I don't have to necessarily do it with an album or to any huge number of people. But, you know, to one person.
I don't want it to be for naught. I don't want all this to be, you know, a waste.

I kind of would like to think that I'm here for a reason.

S1 : You shouldn't talk in class. You might bother the person beside you.
S2 : I know that too. You don't have to remind me all the time.
S1 : The only reason I keep reminding you is that you keep
forgetting.
S2 : Don't worry! The person beside me is always sleeping
during class.
S1 : Why don't you wake him up?
S2 : If so, he gets mad.
S1 : Why does he get mad?
S2 : I don't know. You know how people can be grumpy if you wake them up when they are sleepy.

Although there was no tangible reason for my sense of danger, I could not shake off the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.

Experience revealed, somewhat to our surprise, that the candidate's ostensible reason for office were also his real reasons.

It is all very well for science fiction writers to speculate, but is here any conclusive reason to believe that intelligent life exists in other parts of the universe?

Our discussion, precedent to this event, certainly did not give you any reason to believe that we would adopt your proposal.

The reason some people take premonitions seriously is that they tend to remember the few that are fulfilled rather than the many that prove pointless.

We have made some progress in clearing up the slums in our community, but that is certainly no reason to decrease our efforts.

Many Americans enjoy saving time.
For this reason, home-shopping is a big business these days, and it's getting bigger.
In most cities, you can watch TV channels that advertise 24 hours a day.
The products they advertise can be ordered by calling a toll-free "800" telephone number and using a credit card.
The products are then sent directly to the customers home.

Not being able to fall asleep after going to bed at night or waking up too early in the morning is usually called insomnia.
In teenagers, insomnia is so frequent that it is almost "normal."
For some reason, teens fall asleep later than they did as children.
For example, if a child was used to going to bed at 8 p.m., a teen probably is not ready for sleep until 11 p.m.
No wonder so many teenagers complain of not being able to fall asleep and then feeling tired at school the next morning.

Two thirds of all missions to Mars have failed.
One reason there have been so many failures is that there have been so many attempts.
We have been trying to go to Mars for 40 years.
Another reason is that getting to Mars is hard.
To get there, spirit and Opportunity, the two Mars Exploration Rovers had to fly through
about 483 million kilometers of deep space and target a very precise spot to land.
The space environment isn't friendly.
If getting to Mars is hard, landing there is even harder.

In North America, physical punishment by parents, as long as it is not severe, is seen as necessary discipline by many people.
However, sociological researchers and parents have insisted that we seriously consider stopping the physical punishment of children.
The most important reason is that all people have the right to protect themselves, and children are people, too.

Some types of animals, the jaguar, for example, have been killed off to the point that very few still exist.
A number of these rare animals live in areas where new dams are planned.
In many cases, they could become extinct.
It would be sad if we lost these animals forever.
For this reason, environmentalists work to protect animals so that they can reproduce
until their numbers increase to a safe level.
One solution is to create preserves, large areas of land or water where animals and fish are protected.

Nothing in the history of science can compare with a black hole.
Thought to exist far, far out if space, black holes are said to be small sphere-shaped areas where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.
This, of course, makes them invisible and is the reason they are referred to as “black.”
They're called “holes” because, as far as we know, they seem to be bottomless pits which can suck in everything from tiny dust particles to stars many times larger than our sun, all of which disappear without a trace.

I wonder how many people give up just when success is almost within reach.
They endure day after day, and just when they're about to make it, decide they can't take any more.
The difference between success and failure is not that great.
Successful people have simply learned the value of staying in the game until it is won.
Those who never make it are the ones who quit too soon.
When things are darkest, successful people refuse to give up because they know they're almost there.
Things often seem at their worst just before they get better.
The mountain is steepest at the summit, but that's no reason to turn back.

A type of artificial sand might be able to slow down beach from washing off.
Strangely, this new kind of sand is made by grinding glass.
You might think that walking barefoot on ground glass would be painful.
But it's not.
The reason is very simple.
Sand and glass are made of the same kind of material, called silicate.
When glass is ground very finely, you get a sandlike substance that is harder than real sand.
The size of the pieces can be controlled.
Larger pieces wouldn't be as easily affected by the wind and waves.
So a beach covered with artificial sand would last longer than a beach with real sand.

This point can be explained using the following text, “Tommy had just been given a new set of blocks.
He was opening the box when he saw his sister coming in.”
A computer would have no clue as to what is in the box, but we assume immediately that it contains Tommy's new blocks.
We do so because we know that gifts often come in boxes and that opening the box is the natural thing to do.
More important, we assume that the two sentences are connected, whereas the computer sees no reason to connect the box with the blocks.
In other words, our interpretation of this simple text is based on common knowledge and expectations that are unavailable to the computer.

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.
* probe 탐사선

Scientists believe that elephants become alcoholics for the same reason some people do.
They want to forget their everyday lives and problems, and getting drunk allows them to do that, at least for a short time.
The scientists have found that if elephants are put in stressful situations, they will consume a lot more alcohol than usual.
Sadly, these stressful situations are becoming more and more common in the wild.
As elephants face overcrowding, caused by the destruction of their habitat,
increasing numbers of them are turning to alcohol as the answer.

Although there are thousands of species of wild animals, surprisingly few species have been domesticated.
The reason is that it takes special qualities to make animals suitable for domestication.
They must be strong enough to withstand removal from their mother at an early age.
They must breed freely in captivity and be easy to look after.
Domestic or farm animals must be able to develop a liking for man, enjoy comfort, and accept confinement and control.
And, of course, they must be useful: primarily as a source of food,
but also in the provision of wool or hide for clothing and sometimes as a means of transport or pulling power.

Life is unfair. Yet life is good.
Our ability to thoughtfully deal with the unfairness and build on the good can make the difference between a happy and unhappy life.
One reason so many of us cannot get out of pain easily is our tendency to think,
That shouldn't have happened to me. That was unfair.”
When we allow such thinking to dominate our thoughts, we begin to bear resentments.

Quality time is time that is well spent.
This term has became more and more frequently used in recent years.
Our busy lives have given us an opportunity to learn that the amount of time we spend is often less important than the way we spend it.
In other words, the quality of the time is more important than the quantity.
People concerned with the quality of the time are also more likely to choose rewarding activities;
they have no reason to kill time.
Those who have not discovered the concept of quality time might miss out on something that makes life worth living.

One major reason we change our clocks to Daylight Saving Time is that it saves energy.
Energy use and the demand for electricity for lighting our homes is directly connected to when we go to bed and when we get up.
Bedtime for most of us is late evening throughout the year.
When we go to bed, we turn off the lights and TV.
In the average home, 25 percent of all the electricity we use is for lighting and small appliances.
By moving the clock ahead one hour, we can cut the amount of electricity we consume each day.

Recently, there has been a huge increase in the number of people who remain single.
For example, in 2003, about 26 percent of all US households were single-person households.
Similar statistics can be seen in Australia, where one in twelve people lives alone.
Most people who live alone are young adults who postpone marriage into their late twenties, or thirties.
One reason they often give for staying single is that they have not met the right person.
Others say that they prefer the single lifestyle.
As educational and employment opportunities increase, marriage is no longer the only path to economic security and emotional support.

On the way home, the boy and his teacher reviewed every move in each and every match.
Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.
“Sir, how did I win the tournament with only one move?” “You won for one reason,” the teacher answered.
“You've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo.
And the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

The first reports of the application of genetic engineering to animals appeared in the 1980s.
Since then, there has been a burst of genetic modification activity in aquaculture research and development.
Fish make attractive candidates for genetic modification for several reasons.
One is that they produce eggs in large quantities and those eggs develop outside the fish's body.
A second, equally compelling reason is that aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food-producing sectors globally.
Since 1984, commercial aquaculture has expanded at an annual rate of almost 10 percent,
compared with a 3 percent growth rate for livestock meat and 1.6 percent rate of growth for capture fisheries.

The minute I sat down with the unemployment counselor, she asked, "What did you do that caused you to lose your job?"
These so-called "counselors" should be informed that sometimes people are laid off for no reason other than that the economy is bad and business is slow.
Also, they should try to be considerate of our feelings.
Unemployed people are simply out of work, so please don't treat us like criminals.

These studies indicated that great artists, writers, musicians, and scientists tend to have peaks of creativity every 7.6 months, followed by a low period.
Moreover, the studies propose that high points of creativity come in a longer seven-year pattern.
Sigmund Freud believed that his best work came in seven-year cycles.
Sigmund Freud
Possibly, we all have high points and low points in our creative cycles.
This may be the reason why we have "good days" or "bad days" at work, or do well or poorly on an exam.

Perhaps the most understandable reason people lie is so they don't hurt others' feelings.
Most guests at a dinner party wouldn't want to say that they didn't like a specially prepared meal, even if it was terrible.
But even though people lie for good reasons, lying can be harmful.
If we act on false information, we can be hurt.
If we lie and are discovered, it can destroy the trust necessary for strong relationships.
Besides, lying is hard on the brain because one lie leads to another, and we always have to remember our false story.

Software piracy is already the biggest barrier to U.S. software companies entering foreign markets.
One reason is that software is extremely easy and inexpensive to duplicate compared to the cost of developing and marketing the software.
The actual cost of duplicating a software program, which may have a retail value of $400 or more, can be as little as a dollar or two―the main component being the cost of the diskette.
The cost of counterfeiting software is substantially less than the cost of duplicating watches, books, or blue jeans.
Given that the difference between the true value of the original and the cost of the counterfeit is so great for software, international piracy has become big business.
Unfortunately, many foreign governments view software piracy as an industry in and of itself and look the other way.

Smoke-detector neglect such as this is one reason the United States has the highest fire death rate in the industrialized world.
It is time we did something about this shameful "distinction."
A smoke detector that works can double the chances of surviving a fire.
Yet as many as half of the smoke detectors in our nation's homes are not functioning because of dead or missing batteries.

I finally told Joe I will no longer clean up after the dogs.

Now he cleans up the messes on the tile floor with household cleaner and a paper towel, but I don't consider that adequate.

If character development is a foundation of democratic societies, consider some of the ways emotional intelligence buttresses this foundation.
The bedrock of character is self-discipline; the virtuous life, as philosophers since Aristotle have observed, is based on self-control.
A related keystone of character is being able to motivate and guide oneself, whether in doing homework, finishing a job, or getting up in the morning.
And the ability to defer gratification and to control and channel one's urges to act is a basic emotional skill, one that in a former day was called will.
"We need to be in control of ourselves―our appetites, our passions―to do right by others," notes Thomas Lickona, writing about character education.
"It takes will to keep emotion under the control of reason."

If I don't have freedom I can only put you in cages.

Immigration in the United States has been increasing rapidly.
Each year about 600,000 new legal immigrants settle in this country.
If all the illegal immigrants were counted, that number would be even higher.
Today's immigrants are different from the immigrants of the early 20th century, who were mostly white and European.
The more recent immigrants are mostly black, Hispanic, or Asian.
However, they do have one thing in common: a desire to work and do well in their new homeland.
For this reason, many people feel that the government should not shut its doors to immigrants.
The immigrants have helped the country in the past, they say.

As soon as a stranger is introduced into any company, one of the first questions
which all wish to have answered, is, how does that man get his living? And with
good reason. He is no whole man until he knows how to earn a blameless livelihood.

Law gave birth to the concept of freedom. It is true that you can have no
security in a situation in which every person and everything around you acts
capriciously, unpredictably, or, in other words, lawlessly; but the point I wish to
make
is that while you would have no security in such an environment, it is more
important that you would have no freedom in such an environment. The reason you could
not be free in such a situation is that you could not get anywhere you wanted to go
or successfully do anything you wanted to do.

How Saura Abdullaeva and the 30 million other Muslim Central Asians look at the
world is a subject that preoccupies the Kremlin these days. The basic reason: The
Central Asian Muslim population of the Soviet Union is growing give times as fast
as the country's ethnic Russian population. This means that ethnic Russians soon
will be a minority and there may be as many Central Asians as Russians entering
the labor force and the military.

our neighborhood roads, nothing was being constructed on one long straight

And, sure enough, drivers were slowing down to watch the students.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that
you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as
you do. If someone maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland
is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so
little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own
contrary conviction. So whenever you find yourself getting angry about
a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find,
on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants.

I ponder the reason for our ignorance or carelessness with regard to beauty.
I attribute it to the fact that basically we do not even understand the
necessity for order.
There is no beauty without order.
Order is the structure upon which beauty is built.
Life itself demands order if it is to contain beauty.
I wish for my country that our villages, our towns, our cities, could be
orderly, so that they could be beautiful.

Dear sir,
Application for the post of Personal Secretary I have seen your advertisement for the post of personal secretary (PS68) in today's Daily News.
I am very keen to apply for this position and therefore now have pleasure in enclosing a copy of my curriculum vitae for your consideration.
My main reason for wishing to change my present employment is that I wish to widen my experience and am anxious to work for a firm that is trading with Western Europe.
As you will be able to see from my C.V. , I studied English in London from 1989 to 1992 and so I believe I now have quite a good command of English.
I would also like to add my brother is currently attached to our trade delegation to the European Community in Brussels, and so I feel I am quite familier with the trading situation in Western Europe.
I am able to attend for interview at any time at your convenience, but would be grateful if you would give me two days' notice.
If you decide to appoint me, I must give my present employers one month's notice, but will then be able to take up my duties at once.
I assure you I will always do my best to prove entirely satisfactory.
With all good wishes,
Your faithfully,
Lilian Au Yeung(Miss)
Incls.

Did he tell you that was the reason?

Recently, I was in a restaurant when a woman and a young boy sat down
at the neighboring table. I happened to hear their conversation, The
woman asked: "So, how have you been?". And the boy, no more than seven
or eight years old, replied, "Frankly, I've been a little depressed
lately." This remained in my mind because it strengthened my belief that
children were changing. As I remember, my friend and I didn't realize we
were "depressed" until high school. The proof of a change in children has
been increasing steadily. Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children
speak, dress, and behave more like adults than in the past. Little girls
wearing earrings and designer dresses are not uncommon. Boys wearing
hairs styles like movie stars aren't rare anymore. These changes are not
without reason. In the past, children learned the secrets of adulthood
very slowly. Today, however, TV, computers, and the media are pushing
children into adult roles. Indeed, the amount of information available to
children is quickening the beginning of adulthood.

One reason why stories are so popular in all cultures is that they are
generally easy to follow. The events of a story are usually told in the
order in which they occur-usually, but not always. Sometimes an author
may vary his or her style by presenting the incidents out of their
natural order. Then we as readers must rely on other clues to understand
the true sequence of events.

The American economy now exhibits a wider gap between rich and poor than
it has at any other time since World War II. The most basic reason, put
simply, is that America itself is ceasing to exist as an economic system
separate from the rest of the world. One can no more meaningfully speak
of an "American economy" than of a "California economy." America is
becoming only a region of a global economy.

Anything that contributes to stress during mealtime can interfere with
the digestion of food. For that reason humans have evolved rituals of
eating, such as a drink before dinner or the saying of grace, that have
survived for thousands of years. These rituals put the body in the right
condition to receive food. They relax the body and get the proper juices
flowing for the digestion of food.

"I made a serious commitment to myself to give it my best every time I
competed," says Paula Fraser, 1989 World Marathon winner. "For that same
reason, I wear Bronks. They are seriously committed to performance as I
am ; whether I am training or racing, I do it comfortably in a pair of
Bronks." Working with researchers from Chicargo University, Bronks has
designed its products to meet the special biochemical needs of men and
women. A special cushioning system provides exceptional shock absorption.
Put on a pair and check out the feel of real performance yourself.

But clean air is not the only reason. People can set up a tent in the
middle of the smell of wild flowers and trees. They can enjoy being alone
in the mountains, forgetting completely about the everyday cares of the
world. They are entirely free to talk among themselves, occasionally
entertained by the sweet sounds of trees and small animals. They don't
have to be bothered by noisy crowds that disturb their peace of mind.
These are other reasons why people like to go to the mountains.

Plant your love and let it grow
Let it grow, let it grow
Let it blossom, let it flow
In the sun, in the snow

Love is lovely, let it grow

Love is
a many splendored thing
Andy Williams
Love is a many splendored thing
It's the April rose that only grows
In the early spring
Love is nature's way of giving
A reason to be living
The golden crown that makes a man a king
**
Once on a high and windy hill
In the morning mist two lovers kissed
And the world stood still
Then your fingers touched my silent heart
And taught it how to sing
Yes, true love's many splendored thing
** repeat
-

Stronger than the night
Air Supply
Tonight you are the world to me
Part of the mystery
And we don't need a reason to love
Say you'll never go
That's all I need to know

And when you close your eyes
I will be there
And if the world falls
You will be the only reason to love
I'll find my way

One heart may lie
One kiss may die
But we live
Live and learn to fly
Beyond the darkest sky
Stronger than the night

If you hold me now
All that I feel is yours
'Cause you're the only reason to love
What you are to me is all that you need to be
And when you touch the stars
I will be there
And when the world falls
You will be the only reason to love
Until that day
