I will never forget being in the “big blackout” of November 9, 1965.
With no electric lights, candles were in great demand.
An announcer on a New York radio station that stayed on the air because it had auxiliary power reported,

The price of candles in many stores has doubled.
On the other hand, some good-hearted merchants are offering their candles at half price, or even giving them away.”

In the United States, the arrival of spring is marked for most urban dwellers not by a sudden greenness
―there is little green in Manhattan―but by the opening of the baseball season.
The first ball is thrown by the President and thereafter millions of citizens enjoy the baseball season.
Similarly, the end of summer is distinguished as much by the World Series as by any natural symbol.
Even those who ignore sports cannot help being aware of these large and pleasantly predictable events.
Radio and television carry baseball into every home.
Newspapers are filled with sports news.

Talk of intelligent life on other planets was once the stuff of science fiction or idle speculation.
Recently, however, many astronomers have promoted the view that civilizations may be scattered among the stars like grains of sand.
The idea has inspired countless novels, movies, and television shows,
but has also led to a long and serious scientific search, using huge dish antennas that scan the sky for faint radio signals coming from intelligent aliens.

Earthquakes themselves are unpredictable.
Although any powerful submarine earthquake can bring a dangerous tsunami, not all such earthquakes actually result in a big wave.
Even though you have an effective detection system, it is useless if you cannot evacuate a threatened area.
Here, speed is of the essence.
Computer modeling can help show which areas are likely to be safest,
but common sense is often the best guide―run like the wind, away from the sea.
Evacuation warnings, too, should be easy to give as long as people are awake.
Radios are very effective to tell people to run.

TV is more suitable for family entertainment than the radio, precisely because it makes so few demands, leaving one with plenty of attention to give to the noisy grandchild or talkative aunt.
If the programs required greater concentration, one would resent the distractions which inevitably attend the family circle.

Inactivity is another myth. Surveys show that people over sixty spend much less
time being entertained by radio and television than people in their twenties.

Recently I bought a new car radio from a dealer who recommended it highly.
It proved no better than the one it replaced. I was about to charge into
his store and demand my money back, but it occurred to me to put myself
in his place. Doing this I saw how offended he'd be at having his judgment
questioned. So I took a different tact and appealed to his sense of
self-respect. He exchanged the radio for a much better one, without
charging me the difference in cost. As my grandmother used to say,
"You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."

So great is our passion for doing things for ourselves, that we are
becoming increasingly less dependent on specialized labor.
No one can plead ignorance of a subject any longer, for there are
countless do-it-yourself publications.
Armed with the right tools and materials, newly-weds gaily embark
on the task of decorating their own homes.
Men of all ages spend hours of their leisure time installing their own
fireplaces, laying out their own gardens; building garages and making
furniture.
Some really keen enthusiasts go so far as to build their own record
players and radio transmitters. Shops cater to the do-it-yourself
craze not only by running special advisory services for novices,
but by offering consumers bits and pieces which they can assemble
at home.
Such things provide an excellent outlet to pent-up creative energy, but
unfortunately not all of us are born handymen.

During the Second World War, Winston Churchill was the British Prime Minister.
One day he had to go to the British Broadcasting Corporation to make an
important speech to the nation.
An hour before the time of this speech, he stopped a taxi in the street
and asked the driver to take him to the BBC, but the taxi-driver, who
did not recognize him, said he could not take him anywhere just then,
because he wanted to go back to his home at the other end of London to
hear Churchill make a speech on the radio.
Churchill was so pleased when he heard this answer that he gave the man
a pound, which was worth quite a lot in those days.
"All right, get in," said the driver happily, opening the door of the
taxi. "I'll take you, and to hell with Churchill and his speech!

Nothing special은 I do nothing special을 줄인표현이다. TV를 볼 때는 watch
TV나 watch television라고 말하고, 라디오를 들을 때는 listen to the
Listen to music on the radio

When I learned how to drive, my father took me around our neighborhood to
let me get a feel for the huge car we owned. The quiet, narrow streets of
the neighborhood witnessed the blunders of yet another new driver :
too-wide ( or too-narrow ) turns, sudden stops, damage to the low-hanging
trees by the radio antenna, and driving on the wrong side of the street
to avoid the parked cars on the right side. Through it all, my father
gave words of advice and support with patience.

From who? Just from the one who loves you baby
I see you baby every single day holding onto my best
friend
But you don't see me
So I make the same request now every single night
Going out from me to you on the dedication line(?)
My secret admiration I won't reveal
I wouldn't want to hurt no one by telling how I feel(?)

He just says from the one who loves you baby
One night you'll hear a song

The effectiveness of human society, therefore, is largely dependent upon the clarity, accuracy, and efficiency with which language is used or understand.
As man's voice reaches now with ease - by radio, by cable, by television - across continents, and oceans, the importance of what he says becomes paramount.
But language, unlike such phenomena as breathing and eating, is not biologically inherent : it is not instinctively present.

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling.
Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the
shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes
both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole
universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a
revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a
child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain
predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance
conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is
known of other religions.

The elliptical galaxies have a symmetrical elliptical or spheroidal
shape with no obvious structure. Most of their member stars are very old
and since ellipticals are devoid of interstellar gas, no new stars are
forming in them. The biggest and brightest galaxies in the universe are
ellipticals with masses of about 1013 times that of the Sun; these
giants may frequently be sources of strong radio emission, in which case
they are called radio galaxies. About two-thirds of all galaxies are
elliptical. Irregular galaxies comprise about one-tenth of all galaxies
and they come in many subclasses.

Police stopped a driver who had not reported an accident. The man said
he had no knowledge about backing his car into another car, which was
not moving, and setting off the burglar alarm. ‘I am a music lover. I
was listening to a Mozart concerto on the car radio. I thought the alarm
was simply a badly played note.’ Fortunately, the judge was a music
lover too. He let the driver go.

Turn off your radio.
- I wish you hadn't called for backup.

- Why?
Cops have to play by the rules. I'll have to break a few with this guy.
Who is he?

Hi. Nick Stokes. Criminalistics. Mind if I check you out...
...I, I don't know what happened.
I remember the song I was playing on the radio. I just don't remember
passing out.

Cell phone power's off. Didn't call nine one one.
They would've instructed her to keep it on.
Seatbelt was unbuckled that's why she fell out.
Yeah, so?
She's in the driver's seat, but was she driving?
Or could she have been placed in here?
Maybe she's like 28 percent of Americans, she doesn't buckle up.
I think twenty-nine percent actually.
I'll go radio the 419.

CNN just dug up a 13-year-old charge against Gwen Anderson.
I heard it on the car radio.
What kind of charge?
It's called shaken baby syndrome.
The oldest boy, Tyler? When he was a newborn,
she shook him so hard they had to go to the hospital.
She shook the kid unconscious.

Well, it was around midnight
and we were listening to the radio
I changed the station. Adam got pissed.
Dude, what are you doing? That song was classic.
It's not a classic, my ass. It's crap. It's always been crap.
Now, this, this is tight.

I remember when Holly Gribbs died.
I sent her out in the field and she wasn't ready.
I told Culpepper that he could not have Sara.
I know what you told him.
Okay, listen up.
All personnel will be tethered to our decoy by this radio.
According to Captain James Brass two of our assailant's victims patronized this
specialty grocery store to which we are about to embark forthwith
two days before they turned up dead.
There's a very good chance our assailant will re-frequent this store,
looking for his next victim.
This is a pretty flimsy excuse to get your circus up and running, don't you think?

And I'm sure she's really great.
But, Derek, I love you...
in a really, really big...
pretend to like your taste in music,
let you eat the last piece of cheesecake, hold a radio over my head outside your window,
unfortunate way that makes me hate you love you.
So pick me. Choose me.
Love me.

3:20 at the top.
How many viewers did he lose that night?
Well, we all know he made enemies that night
out of Fox and right-wing radio.

- People want the most up-to-date information. - They were getting it.
Didn't feel like it when everyone else was saying it's a genuine threat--

He gave back the gains he made after Northwestern.
And that's the kind of thing that would ordinarily scare Will straight.
But it didn't.
